Upgrading the internal M.2 drive is very easy. Current deal on 1TB one here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/799125

    • For the dummies in the back row (i.e. me), is the sweet spot buying a 64gb model then upgrading with an M.2 drive, rather than buying the largest capacity in the eBay listing?

      • +8

        to put it simply: Absolutely.

      • And you can put a screen protector on to get the same-ish kind of screen finish as the more expensive version.

        • Any links or recommendations you achieve this? I found some matte screen protectors but prices are a bit steep.

          • +2

@cheepo: Amlink on Amazon have the greatest screen protector I've ever used period.

Mainly because the applicator is Blackmagic. I've put on dozens for friends and colleagues and every single one of them is like it was applied in factory or something.

            • @SmoothCactus: Can't find this anywhere on Amazon tried several different search combinations.

              • +2

@TheHocus: I think they mean amFilm screen protectors

      • +1

Exactly. It's much better value to buy a 64GB model and upgrade the SSD yourself, than it is to buy one of the larger capacity Steam Decks. If you're not able or willing to open your Steam Deck, you can still go 64GB model, and just get a high capacity Micro SD card to store your games.

  • Whoever marked this as expired/out of stock, there is 32 in stock at the time of your report and both codes work.

  • For some reason link from OP showing the listing has ended

Same bunch of same sellers but here’s a different listing:

This is a fantastic device and that's a great price for what it is. Upgrading the drive was easy.

    • for those put off by thought of opening the sd and upgrading, it actually runs quite well with a 1tb sd card - running most of my games off it other than fallout 4 which i play most these days.

Day Gone for me 👏 and maybe Star Wars Jedi Survivor soon too 🤞

      • +2

ah good to know, so if i buy this i can finally open and use my 512gb card i bought long time ago :D

        • The Steam Deck can read SD cards at 100MB/s, which is about the same as a PS4 or Xbox One hard drive. So that's about the level of loading performance you can expect. It's acceptable for most games, but not on the level of the current gen consoles.

          • @MrMcHairyHead: You aren't limited by microsd speeds. That doesn't matter, you're limited by OS loading speeds.

MicroSD and SSD load times are nearly identical, where it matters is where you have big open world games that do a lot of random read writes, those games can be a bit smoother.

For the most part though rand r/w performance is the most important thing for getting the best experience.

idk anything about the ROG Ally, but theres 9 in stock here that come out to $1,168.75 and $1,141.25 with the codes mentioned in my post.

  • Anyone tried out MK1 with prepurchase on this?

  • hmm would it be possible to buy steam second hand 64gb, reasonable condition, for $500 ? maybe soon when legion go is out? i can wait.
$150 saving is a lot for me.

    • Legion is gone be 1k++

      • yes but i mean more competitiion, older devices prices hopefully going down
plus more people upgrading from steam to legion, and they sell theirs, more supply of second hand units, cheaper

  • Would this be overkill for emulation I was going to do it on my Series S but it's a pain going into Dev mode etc

    • depends what kind of emu you want to play? if just SNES then yes overkill

      • PS1/2 N64 etc

        • +1

ps1 is pretty easy, ps vita modded will do it i think
          not sure ps2
n64, get unpatched nin switch and you have bonus of the whole library of switch https://www.reddit.com/r/SwitchPirates/comments/vja3wa/any_g…

          • @CyberMurning: Thanks mate appreciate it

          • @CyberMurning: Pretty hard to buy an unpatched Switch nowadays I would’ve thought?

            • +1

@corgi-runner: not too hard. If you can ask sellers for the serial number on the bottom there are checks that can be done.

              • +2

@ruddiger7: lol i remember one time i did that, the seller call me and ask why you need that? i am worry you will hack mine if i tell you the number

            • @corgi-runner: if you happy to pay 350-400 then not hard.
but again, that is super cheap imagine paying 5 new top games, already break even.
with this you have 500 games included that you will never able to finish in this lifetime

        • Why not use your phone? Or get one of those small factor dell PCs for $80

    • Purely retro emulation? Overkill.

It can do so much though!

thanks OP! finally got me. told myself i was waiting till it dropped to $650 again and saw this pop, is this the all time low so far? happy friday!

    • The ebay plus price is an ATL

  • Excellent price! For fellow Baldur's Gate 3 players unfortunately it doesn't run amazingly and kills the battery after <90mins.
Again not surprising but good to know if you were hoping to play a dcent chunk on the Steamdeck.

The early game runs fine. Act 3? Not so much… it has improved though with patches.

  • +3

They just jacked the price so it's $726.25 after the code now.

    • Thanks.
      They tend to do that.
It should (hopefully) dip again later today.

  • Missed it.. damn

  • Does anyone know what will be the price for Lenovo Legion Go when it comes to Australia?

    • Don't think there is an official australian price.
But you can expect it to be at least RRP converted +10%

      So roughly $1200

      • Thanks, I may wait for Legion Go

  • +1

Put it on sale and then raise then price… classic

    • They didn't raise the price till they had 1 left in stock.
I think its an automatic thing so the listing doesn't get taken down and they lose all the viewers.

    • It's classic greedy

  • Hmm.. only managed to get it down to $717.12 with SEPP15. Won't stack with SEPP17.

I have ebay Plus as well

    • its not stacking bro.. you pick one according to your membership status

      • +1

Yea.. looks like the price has just went up, even with the code

  • -1

wish there would be a cheaper version of this, with controls but with a less performance CPU to play DOS games

    • +1

a lot.. well not really very close but those anbernic and their friends there are different build type some are like switch not all like gameboy
      and dont forget PS VITA

      • thanks, i will have a look.

If you can wait for sales on Aliexpress, the cheapest I've ever gotten a 2tb SN740 was $210 AUD Shipped.

Please please be warned, the device is borderline unusable at 64gb without a MicroSD card or upgrade.

If anyone actually uses this without upgrading, be warned you can brick your device if you fill the drive up fully.

On SteamOS/Deck, the OS will preload what's called shader cache (game graphics optimization files) and these both are downloaded after the game is installed with Proton (compatability layer used to run windows games) and some small amounts will generate automatically as you play games. This is good for performance as youre not going to stutter on your first run playing a game.

However these will fill up a lot of space, more than anyone expects. Steam doesn't do a good job recycling them and can linger even after game uninstallations often times.

You'll have about 25gb of usable capacity for a game, the rest will probably be used by OS, Installations and Shader Cache.

Problem is if you get close to the edge, Steam may automatically download an update, shader cache, or such related files and will brick your deck if it pushes it to max capacity where you won't be able to boot the device.

I feel like valve should never have sold the 64gb model, I've had to help HUNDREDS of people on the Discord return and rma units after they inadvertently ran into this, while you can fix it if you are comfortable removing the drive and/or doing a recovery and losing all your data. If you aren't technically comfortable with that sort of stuff youll have to return the unit.

    • -1

wow you should be working for valve man… so much knowledge about this

      • Ive been doing a lot of work with modding and software dev on the Steam Deck since release so that's probably why..

    • thanks for this, I remembered while I was copying things over to the internal last night and thankfully cleared extra room before booting back into Gaming Mode.

Promptly picked up a 2TB SN740 because I know I'll forget to keep the internal clear, even though I've popped a 256GB SD in.

~$220 with an eBay Plus coupon I had in my account, hopefully arriving tomorrow. Was going to wait for Ali deals but I'll end up forgetting again :p

again, really appreciate the heads up! once the drive comes, i'll hopefully be able to actually start playing hahaha

  • im guessing the seller won't lower the price before the coupon code expires, i'm not sure whether to buy it or to just wait until it gets cheaper in a different deal.

    • Wait. It'll go on sale again in the next month or two.
We do have black friday in november.

      • Thanks for your insight! I'll keep holding on :)

        • It dropped within the last hour to $788, or, $728 with SNSSEP23 coupon.

I'll hold out since I don't need, but "want" one, maybe Black Friday we'll see it mid $600s again.
