Need Some Help Picking an Apple Watch!

Hey all!

I've been in the market for an Apple Watch.

So I've had cheap analogue watches that I've used in the past. It finally died so I thought I'd get an Apple Watch. I work on a studio set so having the ability to read notifications on a watch is handy

I've been eyeing two models as I REALLY want Silver (Otherwise I would've gone Series 7)

SE 2022 44mm - $369 AUD (New)
Series 8 45mm - $529 AUD (Apple Certified Refurb)
Series 7 45mm - $449 AUD (Apple Certified Refurb) - Only Blue/Green/Starlight Available :(

I'm in two minds about it. One, I like my watch to tell me time without needing to flick the wrist all the time. Two, I don't know how much I would actually enjoy the watch as all I want it to do is tell time + show me notifications when I'm at work/in a meeting.

It's "only" $160 AUD difference, but I don't know whether I would need the AOD or not… Other features are not important to me.

Is it best to buy the SE 2022 first and see how much I actually enjoy the watch and maybe put the extra $160 towards an upgrade for the next model when there are more substantial upgrades or just go all out and get a 8. Not going to bother with the 9 as for me it's a waste of money with no benefits.

Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

SE is the way to go if it's your first foray and you're not interested in the health features and precision finding.

Wrist flick to see time/notifications becomes second nature pretty quick. Not an issue.

Save the money to treat yourself to something else.

I thought I would hate the starlight but I can’t really tell it’s different unless side-by-side with a silver.

I completely disagree with the always-on display. It’s a must have for glancing at when your hands aren’t free to do the exaggerated raising gesture, or see which app sent a notification without raising.

    • Agreed! I thought \always on feature wasnt a big deal when I upgraded to Series 6 until I have to downgrade back to series 3 recently cause I cracked the S6 and it is really annoying to have to flick ur watch just to see time. :(

    • Yeah I couldn't really tell in some specific lighting. In other situations, it does seem quite champagne.

    • I’d pick series 7 in starlight. Agreed that the AOD is very nice to have, and I think starlight is close to the silver desired.

If starlight well and truely is out I’d go the series 8. Even if you aren’t sure you will use the watch long term, it’ll have better resale if you do decide to get rid off it. Meanwhile if you want to upgrade from an SE, you’ll end up paying more having gone to the SE first.

If you can accept starlight as a colour, I don’t think there’s a huge benefit of series 8 over 7.

I don't think there's a significant upgrade from 7->8. Just period tracking I think? Still for $80 I'd rather have one gen newer. I definitely wouldn't go SE personally. Although i've never experienced it, I would think the lack of always-on display would annoying af. Commenter above things otherwise though, so… I can see you aren't considering this, but I really like the Stainless above Aluminium. But its quite expensive :'(.

  • worth for the aod

  • SE was on sale at BigW this week for 320

Got my partner this one as a First apple watch. She's plenty happy with it.

    • Yep that was for the 40mm. $369 is the 44mm which I have on hold with a price match with JB. Just seeing whether to grab it or go for an Apple Refurb 8 if it's worth the $160.

Just reach up and removed desired apple from tree using a light twisting motion. I'm happy to watch if that's your kink.

  • Always on display is 100% worth it. I always used aluminium watches and my latest is series 5, but I just bought a used series 6 stainless steel because I want a more premium finish and I want blood oxygen. Wanted gold stainless steel but settled on silver, at least I can polish it. Will buy stainless gold new one day years from now.

Go for series 8 they will be supported for a longer period of time, if you don't care about LTS go for 7 as there is not much difference between 7 and 8

    • I’d argue that the SE 2022 will be supported the same amount as they both were released at the same time with the same chip (I mean technically 6, 7, 8, SE & Ultra are the same)
