Pay for it outright. If you can't, you shouldn't be buying a $2k phone.

    • +13

So cash only, no credit card either?

Just because people use afterpay/paypal4 it doesn’t mean they can’t make those purchases outright.

      • +2

but the person who can make outright purchases will not asking these questions

      • +2

Yeah sure, you can use a credit card if you have the actual cash to back it up. If you need credit to buy a $2k phone, you don't need a $2k phone.

Just because people use afterpay/paypal4 it doesn’t mean they can’t make those purchases outright.

        So why use them then.

        • So why use them then.

Because I don’t have to stand up to get my credit card when I want to make a purchase.

Afterpay deals, though not valid in this iPhone example.

@jjjaar: If you have PayPal, your details are already in it. You don't need to use the pay in 4 option.

            Afterpay deals

            Not worth selling your soul.

            • -2

@brendanm: Incorrect, I do not have any bank/card details stored in my PayPal.

Payments in 4 means I can just align it with my pay cycle, regardless of the initial purchase date. Can I afford it in one go? Absolutely. But if I’m good at budgeting, why not pay it in 4x500s?

              • +2

@jjjaar: So how do you pay PayPal then?

But if I’m good at budgeting, why not pay it in 4x500s?

Why would you? It's exactly the same either way you do it. You are supporting a.business that increases costs for merchants, those costs get passed on to financially responsible people who don't use this garbage, and they also suck people into buying things they can't afford.

                • @brendanm:

You are supporting a.business that increases costs for merchants

As I said before, I wouldn’t have stood up to get my credit card, so they got the sale because they accepted afterpay.

they also suck people into buying things they can't afford

Credit cards / most financial institutions / most businesses do the same.

Add your credit card to your phone. Add your credit card to PayPal.

Rather than simply add a card to your phone or PayPal, you signed up to a whole new service, which required getting your card details anyway, and is on your bank statements, possibly limiting borrowing capacity.

You still haven't answered how you would pay PayPal pay in 4 if you don't have a card listed with them?

                    • -1

                      @brendanm: I never said I use PayPal pay in 4. I don’t use it.

I signed up to afterpay because I had no credit cards and didn’t want any. It was the convenience. But like I said, my budgeting and money management is fine, so don’t worry about me. I’m all good.

                      • +1

@jjjaar: So you didn't want to stand up to get your credit card, but you don't actually have any credit cards. Story checks out.

                  • @jjjaar:

they got the sale because they accepted afterpay

Exactly this. It’s no different to other forms of price discrimination, like selling a washing machine for $1k and offering $50 cashback. The buyers who go ahead and claim the cashback are extra sales the business made because they offered the cashback.

A lot of people won’t bother stuffing around with BNPL because it’s relatively small change, but again businesses are capturing extra sales they may have missed had they not offered it. And it’s really not much different to accepting credit cards as a method of payment 🤷‍♂️

          because its interest free?

          • +1

@cauilfield: Haha, so is paying in cash, or with a debit card, or on a credit card, then paying it off before the end of the interest free period.

        • +1

Offset home loan, interest is calculated daily, so I could spread out 2K over 8 weeks rather than all at once.

I'm not buying an iphone and I'm not spending 2K on a phone, but this is why I use afterpay/my credit card. It is the only reason I use them.
I have the money sitting there, but it's better in my bank for that extra time than in theirs.

          • +1

@taradavey: bingo! This is one of the reasons I use BNPLs and credit cards. But yeah, some muppets won't get it.

      • Just trying to improve my cashflow. Was hoping to chuck afterpay and cc to ensure the cashflow is not affected by the 2k purchase

        • +7

If $2k affects your cashflow, you shouldn't be buying a $2k phone.

        • +3

cashflow is not affected by the 2k purchase

          HAHAHAHAHA

Artist needs some to finance some better tools.

    • Thanks for the advice, but how does this help to answer my question ?

      • The answer is that you can't, so pay in cash.

  • +3

Save your money or buy something you really need for 2k .

  • Six of one half a dozen of the other. On some purchases Afterpay pushes out the first payment out by two weeks.

    • +1

      Not for purchases over $500.

Afterpay purchases over that amount require you to make the first payment immediately.

    • +2

Did you buy off a guy called Deon?

    • iPhone don’t drop in value $1k in 6 months.. not even 12 months

  • $89 (GC) and $2,000 (AfterPay), or $2,000 (buying GC with AfterPay) and $89 (other payment methods)
Check if you can make the split payments with the shop first.

  • +4

As someone who went through this cycle when I was younger, if you cannot afford to buy the phone outright, you cannot afford the phone. Phone plans are fine for tax purposes etc, and afterpay is good if there is an afterpay day deal on. Do not use them if you just can't afford something in cash.

    • +2

It's how I live my life these days, never buy anything I can't afford and only buy it when it's on sale. The only exception to this is a house, but then I bought a house where the repayments were less than my rent lol.

Credit services are basically a poor tax on society, it's funded by those who can least afford it and flows on in terms of QFF points to those with money and massive profits to banks.

    • Who told I can’t afford ?

      • +4

Because if you could, you wouldn’t use PayPal pay in 4 cause it gives 0 points.

        • +1

lol ok. I am chucking most of my purchases > 500 on paypal on 4

          • +5

@cauilfield: Why? You could buy with a credit card and earn FF points. You could buy with giftcards and save 5-10%.

You're just throwing money away then.

          • @cauilfield:

chucking most of my purchases > 500 on paypal on 4

            I've been doing on >$100 ;o

Lol the comments here are absolutely crazy. How are people reaching the conclusion that the OP doesn’t have money? Maybe they don’t want to pay for the entire amount straight away? Whose business is it if they want to pay it off over a period of time? I know wealthy people who use BNPL services driving around in half a million dollar cars. It has absolutely nothing to do with affordability. Poor bastard was just asking a question but got destroyed by the elite members of our society.

    • Nothing wrong with BNPL. I use Afterpay and pay it off with Amex. They are removing Amex payment so I won't be using it anymore.

If OP is having cashflow problems on a $2k purchase, then yes he has no money. If he thinks the 5% p.a. interest is greater than the 1-2% back in points, he sure is clever.

Also credit cards have insurance that may cover your phone. Good luck getting that with paypal.

  • Afterpay can do up to $3000 if you use them a lot, perhaps if anyone you know has one of those accounts who could do you a solid

  • @OP Afterpay appears to have the ability to accommodate split tender transactions, but whether the merchant will offer it is a different thing. Best to ask a couple of major sellers who take Afterpay in store and see if they can accept split tender.

I am usually chucking all purchases on eBay on PayPal payin4 to improve my cashflow. Now need to find out a way to get a phone. Not sure why so many neggers here.

    • You don’t have the right to use that word.

      • what word sorry?

      • I think what he meant by "neggers" is "negative people"….if you were serious with that.

You can buy gift card with Afterpay at Big W. Maybe wait for 20x Everyday Rewards Points on Apple Gift Cards?

    • Oh nice this is a good one thanks !!

  • If you can only afford $500 upfront there are plenty are rather nice Android phones in this range. JB, GG and HN have working display models you can check out.

    • who says I can only afford $500 upfront?

      • You did. You can't afford the extra $11 in interest you'd pay by not having the money on your mortgage.

  • Afterpay so you unlock those tier thingos

amount is $2089, while these guys want it to be under 2k in order for it to kick in.

    who's those guys?

  • okay, best option was to use Paypal pay in 4, to purchase 8 x $200 Apple GCs from OW. 1600, the balance of can be paid with a CC.

  • I use Afterpay for most of my online purchases where I can. Better to have the money sitting in my bank account for as long as possible gaining interest for free vs. just giving it all to the retailer upfront. Then pay off the Afterpay payments on credit card to keep the money in my savings for longer
