Ginger & Ginger Beer (Alcoholic) 355mL 4pk - 2 for $19/$20 C&C / In-store @ BWS

1050

Picked up this at my local BWS.

Online: discount applies in cart.

Usually $19 for 1x 4 pack, so pretty close to half price. 355mL cans is good too as they often sell ginger beer in 330mL cans.

Have yet to try this brand, but seems to rate pretty well.

Absolute day for it in Sydney too.

I find them all too sweet. I wish they would make a ginger beer with just a 1/2 teaspoon of sugar and that's it.

    • +3

This brand 'Ginger &' is low sugar.

    • +1

I bought some 2 weeks ago.. its not sweet enough I need to mix it with tonic water to drink it…

    • How about just mixing a Bundaberg Ginger Beer with your Favorite [insert beer]? You can adjust how sweet it would be then :D

      • How about just mixing a Bundaberg Ginger Beer with your Favorite [insert beer]?

This is all I do. Alcoholic ginger beers are always hit and miss and cost a lot. Much easier to buy big bottles of Bundaberg and mix it with vodka.
You can control the sweetness with a squeeze of lime or topping up with soda water.

    • One Drop is easily the best ginger beer I've had. Not much sugar and a big whack of ginger and chilli at the back end

    • +1

better beer do a low sugar ginger beer.

    • I like sweet usually but also find it hard to drink more than 2 or 3 when they're too sweet. I've not tried this brand but the Brookvale Union one is not overly sweet IMO.

  • What brand?

    • +5

      Ginger &

  • Thanks OP. Havent tried this brand yet.

  • +2

I don't remember it, so probably wasn't any good. Can't argue with that price though

  • Grabbed two. Thanks OP

  • +1

At my local it was 1 for $21 or 2 for $20, bloke at the register called it "the ole irish discount", whatever that means.
Not bad on taste, but did find them on the sweet side. As far as RTDs go, good value though!

    • +3

Well, you’d have to be stupid to buy 1. If you wanted only one then buy two and leave one in the carpark 😂

      • +5

Irresponsible. What if a child found it.

You should drink both to be responsible

    • +4

It's a comment along the lines of the multiple common jokes painting the Irish as not too intelligent. E.g you'd be stupid to pay $21 for a single 4 pack, when you can pay $20 for two 4 packs.

      • I dunno, if the Irish discount is getting more for paying less, that doesn't seem to paint them as stupid. I thought it was a joke about alcoholism, but I've never heard the phrase before.

        • +6

The joke being an Irish person would only buy one 4 pack.

          • @Pelicannn: So it's a discount to weed out the Irish by identifying who pays for the more expensive option?

        • -2

but I've never heard the phrase before.

Which phrase 'the Irish discount'? Maybe it's the modern woke generation who are too afraid to offend anyone so you never hear them. Back in the day everyone was fair game for having a laugh, but now laughing is not allowed because someone will get their feelings hurt. It's so progressive.

FWIW Irish jokes have been around for over a century because the Irish were the poor an uneducated cousins to the Poms. And when a lot of them they fled to the US in the 19th century they were the poor and uneducated compared to the Poms, Germans, and French. So as a result many jokes were created at their expense about them being stupid.

          • @1st-Amendment: Um, ok. I was just trying to connect the dots between discounted ginger beer and the Irish. I just assumed it was something to do with the Irish being stereotyped as alcoholics or something like that.

            • @Diji:

I just assumed it was something to do with the Irish being stereotyped as alcoholics or something like that.

That too. Alcohol, fighting and being stupid was the stereotype for a long time.

    • Is ginger beer considered RTD?

      • +1

Shouldn't be. RTD (ready to drink) should refer to pre-mixed spirits only.

        • That's what I figured, always thought alcoholic ginger beer was fermented but was second guessing myself.

          • @Diji: Hmm. According to the internet, traditional GB is fermented / brewed, but it doesn't get very strong (1%ish?). Apparently some can get quite strong?

(most all) modern is manufactured. Even from Bundy's website (https://www.bundabergrum.com.au/products/alcoholic-ginger-be…):

"Made with real Aussie ginger, fresh cut white Queensland cane spirit…" - yeah, that's a pre-mixed drink.

            • @PeppaPigDidNthngWrng: Oh weird, learn something new everyday I guess!

            • +1

@PeppaPigDidNthngWrng: You can brew ginger beer stronger than 1% for sure, it just depends on the amount of sugar added and the yeast's tolerances.
However ginger is quite strong in taste intensity, so its more cost effective to use it as a flavouring rather than a brewing base.

    • Strange. It's $19 for 1 at all my local BWS shops.

  • +2

Great price, but if I am to ingest that much sugar, it needs to be more than 4% alcohol. 🤷🏼‍♂️
Better just making your own home made ginger beer and chucking in a nip of vodka I reckon.

    • +2

Yep that's what I do. But I prefer kirk's lemon squash.. 350ml can + 35ml of 96.6 ethanol , or you can opt out for zero sugar sprite lemon or something

    • +3

It’s not quite as frugal but a can or bottle of high strength Ginger Kid or Fat Pixie mixed 50/50 with Bundaberg diet ginger beer is a ball-tearer for around $3 per two 350-375ml serves.

Served with fat ice cubes over summer, there’s worse ways to stay hydrated.

Lamentably, the missus joins me with Grey Goose & Fever Tree mixers or Gordon’s Pink Gin RTDs which come in at 4-6x the price. Good thing they help her find a happy place, or I’d be writing angry letters to the distillery…

    • Is 8.7g of sugar per can considered a lot?

      • It's a bit over 2 teaspoons of sugar. Compare that to approx 35g or 9 teaspoons of sugar in a can of coke…

    • Mate, have you ever tried a shot of Kraken in ginger beer? Life-changing!

      • +3

That's a "dark n stormy" isn't it? But yep, sensational flavour mix right there.

    • +1

My local has %8 for $3. 500ml cans. A lot of sugar but 3.2 standard drinks… hard to beat

      • +1

        Local BWS? What brand?

  • My local was also doing a $24 clearance special on Ginger Resistance RTD ten packs. I suspect it’s not nationwide, but may be worth checking your local. Good drop at 4% for just $2.80 a pop…

    • There are a total of nine BWS’es within 5km radius of where I spend most of my days. It’s hard to pin down exactly which one is my local 😅 I did ask one of them at one stage about the competition, to which they said there’s none. It’s always busy. I think I’m in Ireland. I don’t know why it makes sense to not allow Aldi to sell alcohol in qld, while this total nonsense is right there. And there are also Dan’s and other bottle shops in the neighbourhood, of course.

  • +1

I’d drink it if I was paid to

Thanks OP. Also got a free 4pkt of RTD margarita cans when I bought Jose Cuervo 700ml, incase anyone is interested (normally $24). https://bws.com.au/productgroup/jose-cuervo-bonus-pack

  • Cheers op. Good deal heading into summer. Grabbed a couple.

    • +2

Better head back and get the other six

  • Grabbed the last 2 4pks from my local BWS. Way less sweet than the other popular GB offerings. Kinda found them a little too bitter at first but a few more sips and I got used to it, and actually enjoyed it. Thanks OP, nice find and nicely refreshing for the hot week ahead (QLD).

  • +2

Sad when alcoholic ginger beer is cheaper than the non-alco stuff

  • Good deal. Will Dan Murphy price match? I've never price matched before!

    • +1

They price matched for me this morning

    • +1

They should beat it by $1

  • Showed up as $19 for two packs at BWS in Hobart, but no complaints. Ordered and confirmed

  • Will give it a go. Usually just go the Brookvale Union GB

Was ok, tasted like a watered down ginger beer cordial. Did not have an overpowering sweet or ginger flavour.

    • +1

My sentiments exactly. I'm drinking one as I type this. It's somewhat bitter but not overly gingery. The after taste isn't pleasant. I feel like it needs more sugar added to make it taste good.

    • Its ok. Bit of a girls drink, but a thin one not a fatty.

    • Yeah I have to agree these weren't great. Not as sweet as other ginger beers.

      • In the freezer after a long day of digging holes on a hot day, they were nice !

  • Anyone know when the sale ends?

  • after purchase on 19/9/23 My local still doesnt have enough stock to meet my order of 2 ( was supposed to arrive 3 days later ). When ordering they only had one in stock which is sitting at the counter with my name on it, but wont be released till they get the other pack back in. Last time I checked they advised their system was showing 2027 as the next delivery …lol
