Recommend a Good Fan

On the hunt for a new pedestal/tower fan (renting, so ceiling fans are out of question). Been copping 30+ degrees days in Sydney, absolute loathing the thought of how brutal summer is going to be this time around. What’s worse is we are on the top floor of our apartment with very poor insulation so the air con has to be running pretty frequently.

Would genuinely appreciate any feedback or recommendations on any decent fans. Just needs to be practical and somewhat baby proof (pedestal preferred for that reason - harder to reach the blades).

Appreciate any insights or advice.

Vornado Air Circulators for me. They're designed to be pointed at the top corner of a room and will bounce air around the room accordingly. It has completely eliminated the need to switch on AC for me personally for past few years. Went through tons of cheap pedestal fans that barely do anything and last few months before burn out. But I can't seem to justify the cost of a Dyson fan.

I have the Vornado 660 model which used to be ~$250 and is even more reduced to $180 at Costco right now.

I think most people recommend the newer DC variants which are much quieter but you get used to the noise. At setting 1 it's fine to sleep with and setting 4 is hurricane mode which is great during very hot stuffy days. You can point it directly at yourself too if you wish.

    Recommended.

    • Nice. Been eyeing out the Vornado 660 and also looking into the DC variant. Would this fan still be effective for an apartment with very VERY poor air circulation? Air is very stagnant so we need something to push cold air out of air con around, especially our bedroom which doesn’t have an AC. Our unit is quite small though, around 70-80 sqm, so the air con normally does the trick but seems to take a while for the cold air to reach our bedroom.

That seems like an ideal case scenario for an air circulator. Will certainly be far more effective than a pedestal fan.

We bought the DC variant and we are very happy with it. When it is cooler overnight we use it to blow hot air out and bring cold air in.

I’ve also found having a cold shower at night, including wetting you hair, does help.

Best of luck in Sydney it’s looking pretty brutal up there.

Interesting about the vornados. The Dyson’s are a bit whatever, a good pedestal fan I’ve found to be much more effective (thankfully I was gifted the Dyson).

The footprint size and design aesthetic are great though

      i have 3 660s and 1 533dc

      they're great!
from keeping me chilled to helping to dry clothes and shoes, to keeping the tent breezy when camping (plugged to car battery via an inverter)

I run a $15 kmart pedistal fan all night, every night of the year, that's going on 7 years old now.

Not sure what you did wrong with yours.

I've used a bunch of Vornado-style fans + a Dyson and various Dyson clones.

The Vornado style wins hands down. Especially if you can find DC variants with more than 3 speeds.

    • Do you know if any models come with a remote?

    • I have about 3 of the 660 - they're great. Used in most times in summer. Last year I do not use air con at all.

Thanks for the link to Costco page. I need one more for the kitchen. The weird thing is I searched Vornado, the site came nothing. I can only see and buy from your link.

Mi Smart Standing Fan Pro is the bomb (DC motor, battery powered), just don't know where to source one at the moment.

I have a 750mm DC pedestal fan and I love it. Has got me through many a QLD summer. Moves a lot of air and also creates white noise which helps me sleep.

    • Brand and model No.?

I got the IronHorse AIDC002, which was sold at Bunnings for a short while. For some reason they decided to go back to inferior A/C fans. No idea why. DC fans are far superior. It use half the power, has 20 speed, a remote control, breeze function, and a timer.

please note that using a fan on an extremely hot day may not be ideal as all you are doing is blowing around the hot air. Go to local store and get a portable aircon, the bigger the better

    • Have already got a split system at home, just curious as to what people might recommend for maximum efficiency and efficacy in relation to blowing the cool air around - especially from the living room to bedroom.

      • +1

For that use case vornado is great because it blows the cold air up from the floor and mixes it with the hot air at the ceiling lowering the air temp you feel

    Merged from Good pedestal fan

The Ozb favourite seems to be the Viomi Smart Tower Pedestal Fan but it seems after the many clearance posts late 2022 and early 2023 that these are now quite hard to find at a decent price, or anywhere other than on Kogan (for $129).

Does anyone have any input on a different, decent quality (preferably quiet and with a remote) pedestal fan that doesn't break the bank!

Can't believe I waited until it started to get warm to look for one. Rookie mistake.

    • I'd snap up one or two Viomi ones if they were still available anywhere, in reasonable condition.
Anyone that has one, have you found using the app is actually good and worthwhile or is just the remote where it's at?

  • Possibly : https://factoryplus.com.au/amp/viomi-vxfswx12a-z-smart-home-…

    (Factory second with warranty apparently.)
