Got Hit from Side While Driving and Other Person Ran Away

Just wondering what happens in this scenario in terms of insurance.

Typically, when people have accident, you exchange contact details, in this instance the person drove away and didn't stop.

I do have comprehensive car insurance. Would I need to pay the excess or insurer will access and evaluate? Presumably I need to file a police report.

Ask your insurer, but typically you’ll need to pay the excess to start the insurance process unless you can identify the other driver. If it’s a hit and run and they can later find out the driver you may have your excess reimbursed.

$30 odds for the insurance company put an effort for this.

      Goodluck OP.

There's incentive for the insurance company since they can recoup the cost from the other party (or their insurance).

    • thanks. good to know.

    • Any thoughts on what happens under a scenario the OP only has third party insurance? TIA

Yes OP posts on Ozbargain and everyone tells them they should have gotten comprehensive.

I know with AAMI, Unless you can provide 3 forms of identification of the other driver, you pay the excess. Depending on where the accident was, might be worthwhile asking if there’s any cctv around.

Years ago I only needed to provide driver license number and car plate number. What else does AAMI want now?

        In hit and run scenarios

When wife got hit by someone who drove off, had to go to the cops to get the name and only then excess was waived (we only had registration)

Cops were able to give us name and number of the driver

In normal scenarios, I would normally get license details, rego, and a contact number

          rego, and a contact number

          are not

forms of identification of the other driver

          • @resubaehtgnolhcs: How else are you going to identify the other driver? By the wheels they have?

            • @87percent: can you identify a driver of a vehicle from just a contact number and rego?

              • -1

@resubaehtgnolhcs: Along with the license details, and the registration, and the contact number, yes you can

I stated in NORMAL scenarios, when the other party pulls over and you exchange details

@87percent: "How else are you going to identify the other driver? By the wheels they have?"
birthmarks, ozb username, you know the usual
              .

    • Unless you can provide 3 forms of identification of the other driver

What if the at fault party refuses to produce their driver's license details (claiming privacy issue, etc.)?

Do you call the police then? Police won't attend unless someone has been injured or the offending party is allegedly DUI.

Did you get the police incident # or what ever the police gave you after they investigated after you called then from the accident scene?

  • Is this question linked to your A1 posters?
And like others what did the police say. You obviously filed a report. Hit and run is a criminal offence.

    • -2

      it's not . lol.

      • -1

        The police report?

        • yes. they said to come in to station tomorrow

  • If you have dash cam, problem will solve.

    • +2

Not necessarily. If you are hit from the side, there is no guarantee they would show on a front or a rear camera.

      • I got hit from left side door.other driver decline his fault.Evidence from dash cam can see his car in front and a big bang noise when my car went passed. My car written off and other driver had to paid. I win.

  • Everyone should invest one.

    • Probably more than 1, more like 4.

      • They say you should have 7 streams

        • I do on my OF page(s).

Have you actually been in an accident or is this just another "I wonder what would happen if" scenario you've dreamed up?

Your title suggests you have. Your description challenges the title. Your post history tells me you've made it all up.

    • If it's a hypothetical I'd consider it 110% troll behaviour, so police report or close the thread IMHO.

      • why would it be a hypothetical? it's not a common scenario especially given its a criminal offence. Unsure on how seriously the cops take this though apart from filling the report. Technically they have eas6 access to cctv footage.

        • Then either you are so rich, crime and financial loss mean nothing to you or this thread is baloney.

  • Oh no… that's terrible

    Is your car ok?

    How fast was he running?

  • +1

Read the PDS. It will explain what's needed for not at fault claims and to avoid paying the excess. In fact, it will explain pretty much everything about your policy.

  • Do you have a picture of the damage?
    What is the damage like?

    • What is the damage like?

It’s like the car came from the factory but bent and scratched.

  • End thread. The heading says the driver ran away. That means OP drove off leaving the 'crooks' car mid accident scene. That in itself is 'fail to report accident'.
Whole thread is a stitch up

  • Got the same situation last year. I had dashcam but couldn't catch the license number. Reported the police but they did nothing so had to pay access and move on. The car was written off but the payment was pretty good.

  • OP, why didn't you give chase?
