[Steam, PC] Halo: The Master Chief Collection $12.48 (75% off) @ Steam

1030

6 games for just over $12, a definite deal. "Halo: Master Chief Collection includes 6 great Halo experiences. Halo: Reach, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2: Anniversary, Halo 3, and Halo 3: ODST and Halo 4."

I must confess, this bundle always makes me think of food. I always mis-see "Master Chief" as "Master Chef".

Probably should have bought this instead of the Avengers game.

      Buy both, think later.

      • +4

        Buy both, play never.

        • This is the way

    Bought, thanks OP!

  • Which are the pick of the halo games here?

    • +2

Halo Reach was my favourite out of that lot.

I’d play the first game and then Reach. Come back to the others if you like 😉

If you only play one, then I would actually suggest Halo 3 ODST. It's shorter than the others and is basically Halo's greatest hits. Imagine the best gameplay bits of the first three games in one campaign.

      • Yeah no.

    • +1

1 is easily the best, by a wide margin. Then probably 3.

      I'd suggest starting with 1.

Halo has great gameplay, but its the story that is the real MVP - you would be doing yourself a disservice to skip ahead to a future game.

    • I played through this whole collection for the first time a few years back, anything except halo 4 is great, reach and odst are standalone (technically 1 is too) (odst is a bit weird tho compared to the structure of others, as each level is a flashback). 1,2,3 are all a bit different but do follow on from each other. Reach or 1 are probably your best pick for a first game, you lose some story playing reach first even tho it is first chronologically but it probably is one of the most solid standalone games

    • I loved 3 the most. I enjoyed the dual wielding mechanism but it's only in Halo 2 and 3

  • The problem with cd keys is that you end up buying an infinite games you'll barely play.

I grew up with a rule set up by my gamer dad, he said you can only ever have 4 discs (remember those?) next to your PS2, if you want a new game, you get rid of one, no other way. Economically made so much sense now that i reflect. We have so little time (it is finite believe it or not) and having a Steam list of 200 games is a economic disaster when you truly reflect on it.

    Just something to think about.

    • (bargain frenzy dissipates) (silence)(realise bg3 will last me for a long while yet, then I have Armored Core 6 and SF6)

      • BG3 could last you years.

That is why I ended up buying TLOU Part 1 instead. I just want a fun game that isn't going to take forever to finish! Probably why I haven't bought Starfield yet

  • Can confirm that 2 player LAN co-op works in the campaigns.

I missed all the Halos when they first came out and have been playing with my son.

There only real weakness is you do get a bit lost and wander around and backtrack a little in Halo 1 and 2. These games predate the common "arrows telling you where to go next" trope and similar features. We did have to pull up a walkthrough to figure out where to go next a couple of times.

But the story is still great, the gameplay still fun, and (despite how much these games have been copied by every shooter), have some uniqueness.

  • It's not just on Steam. I bought it through the Windows Store instead for the same $12.48 AUD. There's only 8 hours left for the price it said from there. But darn it's a 116.3GB download size which is crazy.

  • An absolute steal. Great games, bought them all on their respective launch dates and had a tradition of playing them split screen co-op with friends.

  • Is this cross-play between Steam and Xbox version? Would love to do online co-op the campaigns with my son. Can't seem to get a definitive answer online where some people are saying the campaigns are cross-play between xbox and steam where others saying it doesn't work or was never implemented.

    • The game would be the same when it's the PC version. It's a game published by Microsoft so it's still the same whether it's bought from the Microsoft store directly or from Steam. You should be able to multiplay no problems with your son between the game bought from Microsoft itself or through Steam.

      • Have you tried this though? Steam forums seem to suggest you can only play multiplayer and not the campaigns cross-platform. Would love to know if anyone has managed to get this working

        • No. But there should be no reason why the game bought from Steam is not cross playable with the game from the Microsoft store itself. It's not as if Microsoft has made a completely different game version that they released through Steam only.

          • @hollykryten: From the Halo MCC website:

Yes, Halo: The Master Chief Collection is crossplay compatible with Xbox.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection is compatible with crossplay between Xbox One and Windows PC/Steam.
However, Halo: The Master Chief Collection is not crossplay betweem XBox Series S/X and Windows PC/Steam or Xbox One.

Clear as mud? Looks like no cross play between Xbox Series S/X version and Steam. So bizzare they would get it to work between Xbox One and Steam but not for Series S/X?

            • @merajaan: So going by that if you want to play the PC version bought from the Microsoft Store with the PC version bought from the Stream store that will be no problems whatsoever because it's still the PC version. There's no actual difference it's the same game version from the same platform.

            • @merajaan: Microsoft probably had to modify game files to be optimised for the Xbox Series S|X so they made a completely different version for that platform. However i believe that the Xbox One version basically is the same as the PC version when it comes to game content.

  • I actually really like Halo 4. Its on par with Reach for me.

5s single player is horrible though. But the multiplayer was great.

The gameplay and graphics hold up extremely well on all games. This isnt a Mass Effect 1. You can easily start on Halo CE and have a great time. Especially in co-op.

  • thanks, my mate recommended "Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary" as a good game.

  • Since the recent updates actually runs really well on the steam deck too.

  • I'm not familiar with the Halo universe, is the first Halo in this collection, I guess it would be Halo: Reach? Keen to try out the Halo universe so this seems like a good opportunity - I'm on Xbox?

    • It is Combat Evolved! I'll buy this. Cheers.

  • Now that the $12.48 deal through the Windows Store has expired. This is now the only way that i know of currently to get it for this price on the PC. But it looks like this deal through Steam also ends in a tad over 5 hours time too. So you better get this deal now as it will be all over by the time you wake up in the morning.

  • missed it noooo.. does this deal come out often?
