  • Hasn't been there a post for that? Like, yesterday? I can't see it now, but this is how I got the app on my phone.

      I can't see it now

My uncle and aunt used to practice “blackmagic”, proving they can read each other’s minds by having me tell one a secret object, then they’d list objects to the other and when the right object was mentioned the other would answer “yes”. The trick was the second last object before the right one was always aomething black 🤦‍♂️

  • "Interactive Controls for Fast Setup" I'd imagine setup would be quite slow if i couldn't interact with the controls….

  • UI looks very un-iOS like. is it actually any good or should i stick to default Camera app or other popular apps like Halide

This is for if you want control over the camera settings for video, not if you just want to take clips. Not worth it if you’re not into trying to film video for editing

    • This is an app for shooting video, not photos (like Halide). If I was shooting anything serious, I'd probably use this app for Video.

    • The UI is consistent in theme to their actual professional video camera UI (the gear that pros use in productions in Hollywood, TV, freelance etc). I don't think it's meant to be mass appealing to the average iOS user taking snaps for insta.

This is a new app launched by Blackmagic only last week, well worth checking out IMO, homegrown Aussie company doing great things on the world stage.

  • has only been out for a week or so, so why is it already free …..

    • To establish some presence, like app devs sometimes do with their new products.

      But might me different reasons.

      • Isn’t this THE black magic? I don’t think they need to “establish a presence”

Their Da Vinci editor is and has been free. (And there is a paid version)

It’s more like they love getting people familiar with the software as they are learning so once they are professional they stick with the same software.

They also have reasonable high end video cameras.

app store says 4+ year old

edit: Actually i think, I'm wrong and the 4+ is the "age classification" and not the age of the app lol!

Balckmagic's philosophy is they'll give you the software for cheap and hopefully, when you become Pro, you'll buy into their hardware.

      Same with DaVinci Resolve.

      • Makes sense. I can't think of too many actual pros filming features on their phone though, aside from the excellent Sean Baker's film Tangerine.

        • Many high end productions need to shoot 'phone footage' as part of a story and an app like this will be used so that the correct manual settings can used. In the past many people used FilmicPro but I think that is now a paid subscription.

    • BMD give out plenty of stuff for free. Resolve, which is a full featured professional editing software used by many high-end colour houses in Hollywood & used to be 100's of thousands of dollars is now free (there is a paid version with extra features but many could get by with just the free version)

  • just downloaded and seems much better than the garbage default app

too bad this is only for videos and not for still?

  • Had a bit of a play around with this today on the iPhone 15 Pro. Works REALLY well. So much better than the stock app and Filmic Pro Legacy (stuff paying for their new sub app).
Did have to uninstall and reinstall on the phone to get Apple Log option. But apart from that, it's a great app!

  • If you just sign up to their cloud service, you get 2GB of free private storage. But if you pay $10 per month, you also get access to be able to have those clips appear instantly in the Resolve editor which saves so much time. But for hobbyist like myself, I'll stick to transferring footage manually like a pleb.

Really cool but I need the word 'SALE' to get me interested.

I downloaded but yeah got so many free photo camera apps I’m just overwhelmed which one I should be using lol 🤪

  • hope they add 4k60 pro res, even though it's so big.
