This would be great for Greta Thunberg as she time travels around the world on a yacht I guess.

    • +2

      The diesel powered yacht?

    • Really thought you had something here, didn’t you?

  • -2

Why would I want to communicate with a satellite?

    • +19

To be fair, it's probably the only thing that would appreciate what you had to say.

    • As a GA Pilot (hobby), I carry a Garmin Inreach Mini - in the event that jv blows up my engine and im landing in the middle of no where. The SOS button/communication is pretty good.

PSA: If your only need is to send out a distress signal to be rescued, look at various other PLB devices like the ResQLink 400, mt610g, plb1 and the like instead.

Much much cheaper in the longer run compared to subscription based devices like garmin, zoleo etc.

Bonus, you don't need to recharge the plb. The battery generally last 6+ years (model depending).

If you only need to send a distress signal why wouldn’t you just use an iPhone 14 or 15. It has emergency satellite SOS now without the need for a cellular signal

      • +1

        Cause like cheaper?

And wouldn't trade in my phone just for sos calls

      • -2

If you only need to send a distress signal why wouldn’t you just use a fire.

It was used for centuries before devices existed and worked very well.

Worst case scenario, the fire brigade and a few police cars will meet you there to question you about lighting fires in the bush.

      • use an iPhone 14 or 15. It has emergency satellite SOS now without the need for a cellular signal

Interesting , is it limited to distress signal ? Or can also make satelite calls like the new Huawei phone ?

      • For reasons:
Not everyone owns or wants to use an iphone,
        These devices are cheaper,
        More durable,
More reliable in sending out sos signals,
No need for a subscription, iphone's only free for first 2 years,
Battery last infinitely longer compared to a cellphone.

Im sure theres more, im just cant be bothered

        • +1

Makes sense. I didn’t know the iPhone satellite feature was free for first 2yrs

      • Because it only works in certain locations…

      • Would you really want to rely on an iPhone in a critical emergency to send a distress call.

Depends on your situation i guess, but i wouldn't be risking it.

    • all of the above don't offer the ability to talk. If you are in distress you can actually text the support group, explain the emergency (if thats possible) and give more accurate descriptions. The above are just a big red button and sit and wait type of units.

Obviously every unit has its role, probably can't get on your phone in the ocean and start texting when your boat is underwater etc..etc..

For land i'd go the Zoleo any-day.

      • "If your only need is to send out a distress signal to be rescued…" That's from my very 1st sentence.

Either way, a zoleo, garmin, defy, plb will get anyone rescued if you press the button.

The plbs just cost way less to maintain.

But if your a guide, i can see the value to owning a garmin /zoleo.

As Starlink has recently partnered with Optus and Telstra to provide 4G via their satellite network in the next few years, these kind of devices may not be necessary in future as you'll have some level of cell phone service virtually everywhere in Australia.

Optus plans to start using Starlink to provide SMS services in late 2024, followed by voice and data in late 2025.

      • +5

I have every ounce of faith that Optus will somehow manage to have 0 coverage across the country. As is tradition.

        • So say we all.

        • +2

🤣 too true. Part of their user data protection scheme. Hackers can't steal what they don't have.

    • Do you need special hardware/modem SoC for a phone to support that ? Or is it all on Telco side of things enabling support on existing / legacy phones.

      • From the article linked by M00Cow:
"We anticipate the service will work with most existing 4G capable mobile handsets, meaning an upgrade should not be necessary for most Optus customers," but 3G phones will not, Optus managing director of marketing and revenue Matt Williams told iTWire.

        • Interesting, that new Huawei phone boasting on feature capable of making satelite calls, now seems not much of an innovation edge / achievement afterall.

I have two of these for exploration crews and they're superb. The messaging function is near instantaneous (just look up reviews for how long some messages take with garmin in-reach and others). I can text my crews all day long out in the field and they can ping location or i can just track the unit from my desk.

Support have been great too, a bit quirky sometimes but they're pretty good on chat after we had a car stolen and we had to figure out if we suspended it or not.

Functionality is great, the only caveat i have is you have to have a subscription - which you can pause for $7/month so probably not for every traveller, but awesome for people who work on exploration crews.

For $80 a month we get unlimited comms - great for talking to the staff out in the field (were talking 150km off road here so its remote).
