Thanks. Got the 16GB RAM 512GB SSD for an extra $60.

    • +1

      worth the $60

      • Hopefully faster with double the RAM.

  • +2

Ordered 1 for my parents hopefully easy to setup

  • And gone

  • finished, pity would have made a great media box with a drive attached.

    • I have a quite old NUC which has IR built in. How do you control these boxes with a remote? Do you need to purchase an IR USB dongle? Or is it possible to use Bluetooth (if you have a bluetooth capable remote)?

      • +1

The other option is to use the computer as a media server using an application such as Plex or Jellyfin. Then on your TV you would install the Plex or Jellyfin app and use the TV remote to control media. This setup also lets you watch your media on all TV's in the house, or on other networked devices such as phones and computers.

Edit: To answer your question, a Bluetooth remote or media keyboard would work fine.

        • I'm currently using a NUC as an Emby server - but it also runs the Emby Theatre client. The main issue is that's it's old and is only 1080p.

I also use Emby (and Infuse) on my Apple TV which does 4K and Dolby Vision but doesn't do TrueHD Atmos or DTS:X. So, I was looking for something else to play that kind of content, and I refuse to buy a 4-year old Shield.

Sound like this would do the trick (if it gets this cheap again).

  • +2

    Gah I keep missing these….

    • Same here….if it gives any comfort!

      • Damnit I also missed this

    • Last time there were only 5 discount codes in total, so don't feel too bad.

  • +1

Perhaps you need sleep rather than another PC👍

  • Is this snappy enough for general use + light coding? My NUC8i5 is getting sluggish I feel

    • +2

A NUC8i5 would be faster for most things. You probably just need more RAM.

    • +1

The nuc8i5 is probably faster than this thing lol.

  • I'm hoping black friday night bring some cheap N100 cpu+16gb+512gb/1tb deals

  • Wow! What? I missed out!

    • U r not alone, lol

  • +2

great for the money but is anyone still using VGA these days, could piss that port off IMO

    • lol whats with the negs? thats a valid point to reduce unnecessary parts/cost

      • +2

fair point some people don't like anyone who has their own opinion sheesh

    • My + still leaves you at -1 towards the dark side.

Unable to bring balance back to the force. Sorry mate.

      • thanks appreciated I think I'll survive I'm teflon

    • -1

For some weird reason, I am still seeing VGA-only ports on the back of server hardware.

  • +5

Got it for 129 in the last deal. Running nicely with Proxmox and about 10 LXCs.

Plex/Jellyfin 4k HW transcoding is awesome on this little machine.

    • That was an amazing deal, sad I missed out on that one

  • +1

Pros and cons for this for your basic office home use/older parents compared to other more traditional desktop set-ups? Is it just table real-estate?

Quick Google said: "you get a much smaller footprint, simpler cabling, less power usage and peace of mind that if your thing breaks, it’s very easy to replace with an identical setup." Sound about right?

    • +1

Yes. You can have zero footprint if you want. Put them on back of monitor with VESA mount.

  • When did it expire? - 2am or so by my bad maths.

  • power draw vs r pi?

    • -1

for an intel N100 based chipset (which is 2x faster than the N95 chipset) it's 6W at idle. Max 36W. Less than rpi from memory.

      • amazing. great for home study - parents PC or always on PC

      • +2

quick google search tells u rpi uses 2.7W idle. 6.4W under 400% load. Rpi is defs more power efficient but also probably slower than intel.

        • quick google search tells u rpi uses 2.7W idle.

Confirmed on my 4B, though my cheapo meter is reporting 3W.

      • for an intel N100 based chipset (which is 2x faster than the N95 chipset)

        I don't think there is 2x difference.

  • Is it better to get this and install Linux and pihole/ maybe can use for virtualisation later,
    Or getting a Raspberry pi 4 4gb?

    • +5

      Raspberry pi sucks in 2023

      • absoluterly.. it's a 2-3+ year old chipset

    • +2

for pihole just get a pi zero

      • +3

PiHole is you DNS server - every request you make will depend on it.
If is down your internet connection is down.
Do you want it to run on the cheapest hardware possible over WiFi connection?
My personal choice would be something with wired connection and more reliable than microSD card.

        • set pihole as your primary dns in your router settings & set a secondary dns like cloudfare

          • @Irishness: Recent discovery: there is no primary DNS and there is no secondary DNS in your operating system.
I believed into primary/secondary DNS myth until I setup PiHole for my home network. At that point I discovered the system is using both DNS servers.
If you are Ok with some ads being blocked and some ads are getting through randomly - you setup will work.

            • @SickDmith: yeah in fairness my setup is a bit more complicated so if the pihole falls over it will route to cloudflare & I very quickly realise as ads start appearing, has only happened twice in the few years I've been running it. More often I need to bypass ad blocking to get a specific website or service to work and then figure what I need to unblock from the log

          • +1

            @Irishness:

set pihole as your primary dns in your router settings & set a secondary dns like cloudfare

That totally defeats the point of running a pihole in the first place. Windows/Android DNS clients make requests in some kind of round robin fashion, it's not always to the first defined
            DNS server.

(My solution was to just run dual Piholes)

            • @rumblytangara: I assumed would work I don't run it that way myself

              • +2

@Irishness: Yeah, when I was running dual DNS servers, something like 90% of requests went to the primary. Both were hardwired into the same switch too, so it wasn't an issue of the primary being on some dodgy wifi connection.

I recall reading up on this years back, and DNS clients are non-deterministic in behaviour.

            • @rumblytangara:

(My solution was to just run dual Piholes)

I ended up with the same.

              • +1

@SickDmith: I enjoy meeting people with similar levels of paranoia :)

(Though someone mentioned that Adguard works as a router plugin for OPNSense/pfSense , so I've recently ditched both Piholes)

      • oh man, pi hole is big on my list of things to learn how to do.

Any dummies guide to set this up?

I have an optus router (to landline) + wire to deco mesh wifi system feeding my whole house internet
what does a typical setup look like
I want to block all the spam/ads that could fool my elderly parents

I have learnt that wired raspberry pi is best?

        • +1

loads of guides out there, from memory this is quite good https://www.tomshardware.com/how-to/set-up-pi-hole-raspberry…
you can use a raspberry pi or a pi zero (you can get a separate ethernet adapter)

          • +1

@Irishness: thank you! time for some reading

            • @ChatCPT: to add you just need to set the dns in your router to the pihole or you can actually use the pihole for dhcp ip allocation too, the pi can power off the usb on router etc

once you start seeing how much gets blocked you wonder how you ever did without it

              • @Irishness: yeh i keep hearing about it (mainly on here) and it looks really great. I am not in IT but I can learn fast so hopefully I will figure out what all those things you just said mean :D

                • +1

@ChatCPT: it's not that hard, if you get to a point where you have everything ready for setup feel free to DM me with any questions happy help

        • I have learnt that wired raspberry pi is best?

Yes, wired is best, and you can just hang it off the back of your parents' router or the primary mesh unit if it's got spare ethernet ports.

If they're on PCs you can achieve the same by running adblockers, but I have no idea how to do so on tablets/phones.

Adguard Home is a good alternative to Pihole. Someone on OzB recommended it the other week, and I've ended up preferring it.

          • +1

@rumblytangara: ios devices you can add adblockers as extensions to your browser settings like safari, which is great until you forget & want cashrewards or shopback to track

    • +1

Both are massive overkill for Pihole. This one has a fan, it's not something I would personally run 24x7 as it'll eventually fill up with dust.

  • +1

Got mine yesterday set it up for my parents then did a few updates and good to go. Replaced a core duo 7600

    • +3

core duo 7600, thats elder abuse

take better care of your parents you bastard

  • -2

New Pi5 anounced and YT is full of pretty much glowint reports but this thing on SALE, wow it huts I missed it as its waywayway better

    • raspberry pi in general sucks. its a cheap, weak, finicky, low power PC device
really only for those after power savings for average user these mini PCs are heaps heaps better
and with the ridiculous price of the Pi now - whats seriously the point?

remember when they called it the $10 PC/ GBP 10 PC - its at $150 now for the best Pi5!
Yet this mini PC will rip it a new PiHole and cost you less!
