DIY Bathtub Cover: A Practical Solution for a Dust-Free Bathroom

Hey everyone, I'm thinking about covering my bathtub since I rarely use it, and it always seems to collect dust. I was considering using a wood sheet and cutting it to shape. Has anyone tried this or have other suggestions for keeping the bathtub clean?

Update: it's a corner bathtub so it's kind of triangular shaped

Probably easier to hose it down once in a while. Covering it may introduce mold from moisture (drain) which is harder to deal with.

    • Or he could also just put the plug over the drain hole before covering it.

  • Thinking of doing the same thing.

Just wipe it with a cloth once a week - takes 2 minutes

    • Sounds like a lot of work. 1m?

Leaf blower. 15 seconds. Can dry hair as well.

Yes, I've done that with MDF and it's fine. Purpose wasn't to keep it clean but to have it as a shelf.

    • MDF will need to be well sealed (paint) as it will swell with the moisture in the bathroom.

Clean the bath or clean the wooden cover. Up to you, but as others have said you may have a mould issue under the wooden cover (as well).

Being on worksites must drive you crazy?

  • Chuck in the plug and you've got a cracker indoor pond

  • I think your idea is good. Just make the edges smooth and the shape should follow the baths lines and be slightly larger (outward overhang) on the non wall sections. Put suitable small rubber feet in the right spots, cnrs and middle. If you wanted to go the full monty have it like a hinged lid to access things you might store in the tub. Just make sure the tap doesn't drip, or the stuff stored (if any) is water proof.
Or turn it into a lily pond

  • Just use it more. Soaking in a hot bath is fun. I use to lay in hot bath for an hour at a time, drinking apple cider, and kept topping it up with more hot water as I go. Come out looking like a lobster, but feeling great.

    • Used the tub like once every 10y

    • May as well use the water. No-one else needs it. We should all have 100 litre baths every day.

      • Exactly. People should be paying extra for my used bath water tbh.

        • You could market it as a sophisticated European vege soup.

    • You put hot water in your apple cider? Maniac! I prefer ice cubes…

I must say I miss our previous place with a bath. Like you, a couple of glasses of rose, a good soak, some tunes on the portable speaker, come out more wrinkled than I went in (which is a an achievement these days). I'd only do it 3-4 times a year, but it was nice.

OP as others have said, you're still going to be cleaning one surface or another. Porcelain is pretty damn easy, just a quick dust, or wash it down with the hand-held shower!

If you put a board over it, you might start using the board as a seat or shelf, and that might cause the wood to scratch or wear the surface of the bath that the wood is resting on.

    • Just put small self ahdesive stoppers on the surface in each corner and midway where it touches

      • I'm "pro tractor" too, but I've never driven one.

        • You should think about doing stand up comedy. The hecklers could do with the work.

I've read this once perhaps may be useful to you.

  • Foldable plastic bathtub cover

Popular in Japan, to keep tub clean and also to keep water warm. I found them quite easy to clean and put away.

Above link is a random search result. I've not bought or used one here so don't know about quality. Please triple check sizes as these may be designed for a market with different tub dimensions.

There's also a roll up version but I find the foldable one easier to clean (bigger slats) and easier to store (folds flat).
