that explains my lack of success at fishing.
I need a long sleeve shirt made for fishing that explicitly says “fishing”

Do you have a shirt that states another activity that also starts with f?

What makes a piece of clothing non-SPF 50+?

Unless we're talking fishnet garments, they're all protecting from UV radiation. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

    • A standard white cotton t-shirt is like SPF 5

How come I don't get a tan under my t-shirt then?

        • the UPF 50 shirt can block out 98% UV rays, if you go outdoor long time, this kind of shirts will make you feel cool all the time.

        • I usually hold your comments in the highest regard WN but I think this one is a bit shortsighted.

If you stay out long enough you would. Most people aren't though. Fishing on the beach for hours during the middle of the day, particularly if you get it wet, you're definitely at a heightened risk

        • SPF refer to UVB only.
UVB radiation burns the upper layers of skin (the epidermis), causing sunburns.
UVA radiation is what makes people tan.
On average you can get up to UVA SPF 15 equivalent from a T-shirt.

Wearing a cotton tshirt is better than not wearing anything for sure. But if you can hold the fabric up at the sun and see light through it, UV is still coming through. There's various factors that truly determine SPF like the weave/colour/tension etc. It's not as simple as you make it out to be.

To answer your original question, SPF50+ means the material is blocking 98% of UV rays.

I was about to order 2 of these, and found what I thought was a better deal for my circumstances, but obviously they have picked up my details even though I didn't complete the order.

Anyway, they sent me an email with a 15% off code, which seems generic. I don't know whether it will work for others, or stack, but worth a try if you are thinking of ordering.

    The code is BASSD15

Hello jackspratt, thanks for your comment. BASSD15 is only a 15% discount code and one use per customer. sunshirt25 is a special 25% discount for the long sleeve shirts, both discounts don't combime together.

  • Unless you're a fisher who spends many hours wading in the tropics (me) you need to be educated about this subject.
