Meme game but at least it's cheap

Mysteriously transported from New York City, Frey Holland finds herself trapped in the breathtaking land of Athia. A magical, sentient bracelet is inexplicably wrapped around her arm, and Frey discovers the ability to cast powerful spells and use magic to traverse the sprawling landscapes of Athia. Frey nicknames her new golden companion “Cuff” and sets off to find a way home. Frey soon learns this beautiful land once flourished under the reign of benevolent matriarchs, called Tantas, until a devastating blight relentlessly corrupted everything it touched. The Break transformed animals into beasts, men into monsters, and rich landscapes into four dangerous realms. At the center of their shattered domains, the Tantas now rule as maddened and evil sorceresses. Unaffected by the Break and desperate for answers, Frey reluctantly agrees to help the last remaining citizens of Athia who see her as their only hope. Frey’s journey through this strange and treacherous land will take her deep into the heart of corruption where she must battle monstrous creatures, confront the powerful Tantas, and uncover secrets that awaken something much more from within.

This game has big "free on Epic" or "free PSPlus game" vibes

    • Pretty much. Just hold off buying it.. it will happen. As big of a square Enix fan I am.. it's one of the few preorders I cancelled due to a demo highlighting how annoying a protagonist can be

    • Top tier of PS Plus must be $31 a month by now..

      • $5.95 for those of us that stacked before the price rise.

    • Considering the last two months of PS Plus have been Saints Row and Callisto Protocol, Forspoken would have to be the odds-on favorite for December.

Ive heard this game was unfairly slated. Any opinions from those who have played it?

    • +3

I played the demo and it was fairly unoriginal & boring.

    • +1

fairly slated is a fair statement with all fairness

    • +1

I played it all the way through and got the platinum. I'd give it a 7/10 overall, but it has a bit of a slog for say, the first 10 hours until you start getting good spells. The combat was actually fun and mixing in parkour during it felt fun and fluid. Story is okay, maybe above average, ignoring the average voice acting for some characters, I've definitely played a lot worse.

The real fun for me was at the end, versing the four large abominations on the hardest difficulty, which was only really doable with end-game equipment after finishing the story.

Most people seem to base the entirety of the game from playing the demo or watching/reading reviews from others.
I didn't play the demo, I also didn't watch any trailers, just bought the game at launch and played it over the course of 10 days until I platinumed it.

Based on recent trends this will be next month's PS+ game.

    • +1

This game has bad reviews. wouldn't be supprised if sony add this to the monthly free games next year.

  • +4

I paid $500 for the limited collectors edition of this game REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

    • +5

      why

      • +2

I thought Frey was going to be the next big iconic gaming character…. REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

  • +1

    $15 or nothing!

    • +1

      Free with psn+ or nothing

      • Or XGP. Or Prime Gaming. Or EPIC. I ain't too picky.

        • Okay leave it to Prime Gaming then, so it won’t take a monthly free AAA game spot in psn+

The game's actually good. Unfortunately, there are many systems within it that fall short of greatness.

  • First game to be patched yesterday with FSR 3 support

  • +1

please define the term "meme game"?

  • This, or Sonic Frontiers?

I was originally interested in the game, but eventually passed as I didn't like the protagonist along with some technical issues at launch. I finally decided to bite at $31 and even then I was hesitant. But I'm pleasantly surprised, I'm about 10 hours in now and it's actually a lot of fun. The protagonist still isn't a highlight for me, but she gets more tolerable as the game progresses.

I don't normally like venturing out and doing random stuff in games, but it's actually worth doing in this game and it'll give you actual tangible upgrades you can use in the game. I also like that the game isn't ridiculously long for an open world game, so you can rush through it and finish it in 15 hours if you want, or take longer doing more of the side content. I feel in this case the smaller scale of the game works in its favour.

Finally, it's worth noting that the game has gotten patched since launch, so the technical issues I mentioned have been fixed. Performance wise, the game now runs at a locked 60 fps the vast majority of the time, the HDR has been fixed so it actually looks good now, the in-game resolution has been increased since launch and the lighting of the game has been improved so it actually looks like a proper next-gen title now. When the game originally came out, performance was all over the place and the lighting looked kind of bad which made the game seem more like an early PS4 title than something you'd see running on a PS5, this was especially weird as the lighting seemed worse than it was in Final Fantasy XV (which ran on the same engine). Luckily all of this has been addressed via updates, so just make sure you update to the latest version before jumping in.

Overall, I'm happy with the purchase at this price point, and jumping in now you get the improved visuals/performance as well.
