Mesh Wi-Fi Dilemma Please Advise Which to Choose

  • You haven’t said why you are upgrading from Tenda. Presumably you are having issues with local speed to a server or something? The cheapest Tenda should still be fine with those slow nbn speeds.

If you have to go the 'mesh' route, then the thing to look for is 'tri-band'. You want to connect your 2.4Ghz & 5Ghz devices to the wifi, and be able to get the performance from them. However if your 5Hz is also being used for the backhaul to the internet, it's always going to be compromised performance. You need that dedicated backhaul wavelength - and that tends to cost you.

Also, look for Wifi-6, 6E or indeed 7. Makes a difference in the bandwidth and in the distance over which you can make a stable connection.

First step would always be to see if you can run an ethernet cable to the other end of the house and put a router/access point there as well. You get to use the router/modem you already have, and you have a more flexible solution in future.

    • not for those nbn speeds (nbn 50/20 fttp). however its fttp , so the potential to go higher is there. Wifi-6/6e are also going to dramatically increase the prices!

      • If you want to go smarthome using multiple wifi based devices, then Wifi 6 etc really helps (like they actually tested it at more devices). Plus the bandwidth within the home goes up. Personal experience speaking.

You can get Wifi 6 etc for sane prices - not everything is an insane rort.

  • Tenda are pretty good.
