Hey All

That time of the year to pay local council rates. Unfortunately I missed the 10% Master Card deal few weeks back. Any other tips/hacks to save money on the local council rates?

Thanks

pay it on time to get the discount

Is that a thing? Mine doesn't even discount paying the whole year in advance, so I just pay quarterly.

If you pay late, mine charges interest. So….. I guess the discount is paying ontime ;)

    • No discount unfortunately

Apart fe the physical cards there is also a digital card offer (maximum 2500) that runs regularly. Can you do an interest free payment plan while waiting for nexr offer?

I paid with iTunes cards and saved heaps.

    • Can we?

        Yep.

I got a call a few weeks back telling me my rates were overdue and said I should pay with iTunes cards.

Suprised when it was about 20% cheaper than the notice I got in the email last month.

        • Love it

    Move to a cheaper property

    reduce bin size

I did that thinking it would be significantly different. They knocked off $30. I wasn't impressed.

still a discount, even if it is a crap one

        • Yeah, but now I have to walk a much shorter bin down a steep hill. Only good thing is it fits inside the other bins, so you can take both in as one.

Pay with Amex via Auspost Billpay - get some points. That's about it.

Rates? I thought it was blackmail to feed to parasites in admin and the treacle walking zombies who do about a weeks work a month, if that. We'd be better off paying the money into a class action or crowd fund to have local govt scrapped. It's the biggest waste of time and money, yet has some of the most power of all 3 troughs of govt.It is magnet for vested interests and corruption, and delivers less services per $$ over time, and yet employs more staff ,consultants and contractors(mates). It has so little real oversight it gets away with shit no-one else could. It's filled with bullies ,especially in the upper admin and CEO ranks and most rangers are all wannabe SAS operatives. So honoured to sponsor this local retirement swamp.

    • I will bet that people seek you out at parties.

I could not GAF either way whether ppl seek me out.

If you think you are getting bang for buck from a local council, good for you.As if the state govt can't do the 3 core functi0ns cheaper & more efficient. And are you aware (do you care) of the sweeping unconstitutional land grabbing title powers have over your non payment of rate, levies and services?

The protections they have (as an entity and as staff and councillors) over and above fed & state govts is a scam.
Did you know, if you bag a councillor online, that councillor can sue you with council money paying for their legal costs? They can force local community newspapers to retract comments they don't like.

You can move to the ACT, we don't have local government. Agree two layers is plenty. Can't guarantee there is less corruption though as the ACT opposition is non-existent.

Sounds about right for a public service with no competition. The state government owned water companies are another example.

      • They privatised the water companies in the U.K. It is not better.

        • +1

They ones here are already run like private companies. The structure has been in place for decades. It's just up to the government of the day to pull the trigger and sell them off.

          • @JIMB0: Privatise the profits but socialise the losses. That kind of sell-off?

    • I'm going to have a stab in the dark-

      Protractor isn't vaccinated against Covid.

      • +1

        Stab away.

        • So how many Covid vaccine shots have you had?

          • @JimB: according to you none, according to the antivaxxer loud haler fraternity I'm a veritable flywire door.
It's probably one or the other.
If I could get vaccinated against local govt, I'd line up tomorrow.

            • @Protractor: You do know you could be a local government councillor and change things, rather than just whinge about them?

              Try and make a difference.

              • @JimB: Yes, advocating for its abolition always begins with sucking from their trough. Yeah,no thanks.
Maybe I should consider becoming a neo too?

Best way to make someone feel superior is to tell them you're unvaccinated

    • treacle walking zombies who do about a weeks work a month

      80% of my colleagues

      • They must think they are WFH

pay with the maximum number of instalements allowec ?

  • +1

    Secede.

  • Pay monthly, that is what I do. Just contact your council/shire to arrange it. Easier on the budget and they just get their money each month.
