I very much enjoyed this game, even though it's not my usual genre of RTS.

Great metroidvania style game, completed both on xbox game pass

I'm looking at gaming options for my son. Steam is basically a platform that can be used on PCs?

So, cheaper to get going with this than buying a console?

    • +5

Steam is free, games can be and are often extremely cheap (look out for Steam sales, there's 2 big ones twice a year), however the PC itself is what can be the high cost factor. A game like Ori wouldn't need much to play but for the most part you'll want something half decent that will run other games. Your budget is everything, however I personally don't recommend spending less than $1000 on the PC itself.
E*: To answer your question, yes, Steam is a platform for games. Just think of it as a massive library.

Create an Epic account today and grab the 1-2x free games a week which they have been doing for the last few years. You can only collect the game for free in that week, but you can keep and play the game indefinitely. Not all are great, but hey, free games which they can try out. Occasionally there are amazing games for free, too, so just grab them all

        Thank you, both.

It would just be used on a $900 laptop. My son is only 8 so hopefully that's good enough for now.

Holding off on the proper consoles for a bit longer.

Second hand consoles are also an option. The ps4 library is epic and used physical ps4 games are so cheap.

For this style of game you would really require a controller. Its just not feasible with a keyboard or mouse.

Ozbargain's controller of choice is the 8bitdo Pro 2:- https://www.8bitdo.com/pro2/
But it is not exactly cheap, although it can be had for around the $55 - $60 mark when on special.

It is possible to get cheap, no name wired controllers for less than this, but YMMV.

          • @cannedhams: I would argue that it'd be a better idea to buy an Xbox layout controller (just the standard Xbox Series controller) which often goes on sale for $62 or so. It will have the widest compatibility with games, especially those on Xbox Game Pass. It might be confusing to play PC-oriented games with a Nintendo-style button layout. YMMV

            • @Demarque: Either or. I played Wisps on Switch using 8bitdo, then played Blind Forest on PC using the gamepass $1 deal. Used an 8bitdo each time without issues.

Agree that Xbox controller is best for compatibilty for Xbox ports. 8bitdo is good if you are wanting a controller that can be used across Switch, mobile devices or PC.

For the cheapest way in, I would recommend you look at a subscription to Xbox Game Pass for PC. $11 a month gives you access to a pretty massive library and you can use it as an opportunity to try out games that you may want to buy (for any games/IP not owned by Microsoft) on Steam. It'll also help you to know how powerful your PC needs to be to play the kinds of games that your son might be interested in. Just my 2c

      • Cheers. I'm assuming I'd have to buy a proper control? Keyboard would be pretty ordinary I'd imagine.

        • +1

It depends on the game. Some are optimised for controller, some for keyboard and mouse

        • +1

for this game, yes. Platform games (such as this one) are pretty much unplayable unless you have a controller.

          • @cannedhams: I played Ori 1 & 2 with keyboard (and mouse?). I find controllers harder to use in general. I'd say don't rule out playing games with keyboard, especially for a kid who won't have any comparisons

      • Sorry if a stupid question, why do people fork out for an Xbox console rather than just do the Xbox game pass?

        • Because not everyone will have a PC that can run the games they want to play, or maybe they want to play games on their TV but don't want to use a PC for that. Consoles are also easier to "get into" than PC gaming (not that PC gaming is as challenging as it used to be). Any xbox game you install or buy for an xbox will just "work" (for the most part). The lines between the two are gradually becoming blurred though, especially as cloud gaming grows in popularity.

I enjoyed both of these games immensely. Beautiful visuals, intuitive and engaging gameplay and a heart-tugging story that left you feeling empathy for both protagonists and antagonists alike. 11 thumbs up

Amazing games. Beautiful visuals and music, complete with a story that tugs at your heartstrings.

Can be difficult at times, but it never felt unfair.

  • I have save games for Ori and The Blind Forest on Gamepass and my subscription has expired. Can I buy on Steam and use those saved games?

    • Not sure, but you can always buy the game and if it doesn't work, you can return it. Steam's returm policy is great, but check the website to be sure.

"@" in the title is typically reserved for the store name. A standard title would be:

[PC, Steam] Ori and The Blind Forest $7.48, Ori and The Will of The Wisps $9.98, Ori: The Collection Bundle $15.71 @ Steam

  • Also on game pass (separate titles).

  • Great games!

  • I am never able to complete this game… though loved it sometimes I found it very difficult

  • Steam deck compatible?

    • +1

Check ProtonDB and YouTube videos. It seems both games are in this case. Type in the name of the game and "Steam Deck" on YouTube and there's typically footage unless it's an obscure/unpopular game.

  • brillant game recommend.

  • I got the games on my Nintendo Switch OLED screen = awesome. Highly recommend for those on the fence haven’t played this series, it’s very well crafted that to this date still stands out to me possibly in terms of the artistic direction & atmosphere.

I’d summarise the games as action RPG metroidvania exploration

  • good price for the combo

  • Hallowed are the Ori

  • Awesome games. A must play. Even though there are some really tough parts in these games that may annoy some people. Though you can easily find trainers for the games on PC to help you get passed these difficult parts.

  • I prefer the original but the second is also excellent.
