    • Long live the King!!!!

      • Charlie boy, nah.
        Long live the turtles

    • $489 for the "king" version isn't bad. But unless people want that specific colourway I feel like it's better to wait for the regular model at <$350

      • I like the colourway (and Padi editions) but don't like the pill shaped cyclops or setting a day on autos.
Just check again those deals those two weekends ago.

why do I not feel old enough to wear these? they feel very… mature, if thats the right way to put it

When smart watches look good and run on your own movement or solar without charging, give us a call.

        • +4

To be fair, the smart watch could give you a call, so it does one of those things!

          • @Munki: Haha, to be fair, you would need to pay for a sim card for that to work, which then consumes more battery, and costs as a service ;-)

        • +1

I was gifted a Samsung smart active sports or something watch by the missus. I got sick and tired of it after 3 days of it constantly beeping and ringing. The worst part was it became another thing that I had to remember to charge.

Yes, it measured my BP and sleeping patterns or whatever, but I see it as a disadvantage as now I've to think about privacy. The missy eventually asked if she could take it back as she would at least use it. Now she's using it.

My 3 years old citizen eco drive just keeps running otoh and doesn't have a bunch of crap that I don't need and costs half the money.

      • +18

I'm the complete opposite - I had a smart watch and became irritated by the constant interruptions all the time and the feeling of always being 'connected' in some way. I switched to something analogue and not only do I enjoy a newfound interest in collecting interesting watches but I genuinely feel better because of it, too. YMMV

        • It would irritate me too. But you need to enable only what you need. I use a huawei watch so that I dont need charge everyday. Once in 8 to 10 days and I am good.

          • +5

@John Doh: So you have to turn smart features off, to make it a dumb watch, just to get it through a week? I mean a phone does pretty much everything a smart watch does, so it seems redundant right to get a companion to your phone.
You can get a $30 casio to tell the time and it's battery lasts 10 years.

            • -2

@onlinepred: A smart watch can be used as a fitness tracker, or to recieve calls from your watch when your phones in another room and so on and so forth and can also enable all the features you require when needed. You can also change the watch face when you get bored. No, huawei watches dont need charging as much as other watches even with the features enabled.

Anyways its dumb arguing in a thread who loves normal watches. Its like arguing iPhones are bad in a iPhone thread

              • +2

                @John Doh:

smart watch can be used as a fitness tracker

I do two dunny runs a day, eat thrice, exercise for an hour and sleep like a rock for 7 hours. There, I don't need a fitness tracker.

                • -2

@CocaKoala: Fitness tracker is a hobby. Just like people buying expensive watches when 10$ watch do the same.

                  • +1

                    @John Doh:

                    Fitness tracker is a hobby

Sure thing, let's find out how much a smart watch used as a hobby fitness tracker is worth after 10 years and compare that to how an automatic Casio holds its value.

                    10$ watch do the same

Rubbish. Then show me a $10 watch that's as reliable, accurate, long lasting, high quality like a Seiko or Casio and will go on forever like an automatic or a solar and I'll buy it.

I'm not talking about Rolexes here, but you should still know that "expensive" is subjective. Some of my perfumes cost me over $600 a bottle and I didn't bat an eyelid getting those (they're worth more now if I were to resell).

Besides these BS smart watches are usually more expensive than these classic seikos, so I see absolutely no point in getting one of these.

              • @John Doh: Why don't you just carry your phone with you? Your watch seems entirely redundant. Then you just need your phone and a cheapo fitness tracker.
You should have just bought a fitbit, no need for this expensive hobby of buying expensive "smart" watches.

You are the one that came to a watch thread and tried to argue that a fitness watch is better than a normal watch lol. Just because you like el cheapo "smart" watches. I use my Apple Watch for runs, and normal watches for everything else. Watches are a fashion item and can be a hobby. Fitness watches are for fitness. Smart watches are a luxury item that is just a pair to your phone, and does everything your phone does in a paired capacity, and then does everything a cheapo fitness band does. So if you just had your phone with you and a cheapo fitness band, you would save loads of money, the watch battery would last longer. Also changing the watch face to another terrible looking watch face might do it for you, but it still looks like a flat digital screen….

                • -3

@onlinepred: Whats wrong in me coming to any thread. Why buy a fitness tracker and then wear another watch later when for some, a smart watch will just do both. Thats all I said. But people in here got offended because they love normal watches lol. Flat screens are fine for many. Your phone is a flat screen so is your TV, laptop and computer monitors. They all can display beautiful stuff.

                  • @John Doh: "Because smart watches exists and can do much more for less."

They do less than what a phone does. I have a phone for phone stuff, I have a smart watch for fitness tracking (mostly because I bought one, hated wearing it daily as it keeps buzzing, and looks terrible but keep it for fitness tracking), and I have normal watches for daily/nightly wearing.
There is no offense, there is simply opinions. IMO smart watches are a waste of money (aka a luxury item), most people I know only use them for a run every fortnight that they never look back on the details of, or they track their sleep for some insane reason - and of course reply to messages on a tiny screen. These things can be done on phones. If you want to track your heart rate as you are an elite athlete, then yes, buy a Garmin and a chest strap.

"Anyways its dumb arguing in a thread who loves normal watches. " - so you are calling yourself dumb? Or maybe you mean "Anyways its dumb arguing in a thread who loves 'smart' watches."

                    • -2

@onlinepred: Mate you win, you wear whatever you want and I will wear whatever I want.

          • +4

@John Doh: I use an eco-drive watch, so I don't need to charge any day.

I used to have a seiko kinetic watch, but it kept overcharging itself just before bed time, or sometimes in the shower…

            • @Tiggrrrrr: Hmm.

              …No, nevermind.

Also don't wear your watch into the shower.

            • @Tiggrrrrr: I have the same problem with mine. 2 questions:

              1. Are you right or left handed?

              2. Which hand do you wear the watch on?

              ;)

        • Just silence everything. I mainly use it for fitness and sleep tracking. It definitely is handy to know when your phone is ringing though. Probably the 1 good thing about it.

          • +4

@mit: Usually my phone lets me know when it's ringing ;-)

            • +2

@onlinepred: Usually when my phone rings, it's a scammer anyways xD

            • @onlinepred: Pfftt.. I've heard that said many times before. Wouldn't trust those old wives tales. Mine has never done it for at least the last 4 weeks.

          • +2

@mit: "It definitely is handy to know when your phone is ringing though"

They should invent a phone with an audible ring to alert you to when someone is calling.

      Citizen BL8153-11A?

      • Looks pretty good.

It was $249 on Starbuy a couple years ago, time to wait for a deal!

        • +1

They don't have that one listed any more so you'll have to go hunting, but it should be out there somewhere although unlikely for that low. $249 is a cracking price for anyone who picked it up at the time. I wish that included me :(

    • +1

I personally think cream faces are more classic than white.

      • Yeah the closest I got is the seagull 1963, pretty classic .

Hmmm tossing up between mortgage payments and a watch. The 'timing' for this deal couldn't be any worse!

    • +8

You have 600 dollar mortgage payment ? Go for it buddy

  • I feel like the SRPH93J is a lot of watch for $405.30 but that red clashes with so many colours IMO.

    • +1

      hardlex :(

      • +2

I don't think that mineral and hardlex is as bad as people make out.

I have one scratch on my mineral crystal after 7 years of daily wear. I quickly got used to the scratch and it doesn't bother me. If if it gets too messed up I'll probably replace it with sapphire, but until then I feel like mineral serves its purpose just fine

        • I've had mineral crystal watches last years without scratches, but hardlex watches scratch in weeks.

  • +1

I don't even use the rotating bezel on my watch, but I just can't bring myself to buy a watch with a non-functional bezel like the SRPH93J. It's the principle of it.

  • +3

Bahaha, the RRP on these are ridiculous.
    No one's paying that much
And the fact you can get $100 watches out of China with Sapphire glass and this is Hardlex is a joke.

    • Which ones have sapphire and where could I get them? (genuinely curious)

      • +4

Steeldive from Aliexpress is one popular example

      • +1

        Aliexpress.

      • +5

Addies Dive, San Martin, Steeldive, Tandorio - all on Ali Express, many of which also pop up here on OzB as well.

      • +1

        You must be new here

      • Pagani design as well if you're inclined to homages

    • +2

Seiko used to be great value. In the last 5-7 years they've seemingly shifted themselves upmarket without improving much.

Alba and Orient are the cheaper options from Seiko Epson corp. The former is kinda meh, the latter isn't officially distributed in Australia, so you need to buy greys from overseas

During the same period, Chinese watches have become a lot better and more popular. It will be interesting to see how Seiko, Citizen etc. respond

Personally I'm not ready to get a Chinese watch yet. A lot of them are homages, so they feel a bit IP infringement-y replica-ish to me. So Casio currently stands as the king of value for me

      • As the Chinese brands are so cheap compared to the Japanese ones and with better specs sometimes, would these Seiko's lose a lot in value?
I like a couple of them but know I'd get bored and want to change watches in a couple of years time and sell these to put towards the new ones.

Do they depreciate in value similar to cars?

        • +2

I think watches have almost always depreciated in a similar way to cars, even before the Chinese ones came along.

They're also comparable to cars because there are watches that depreciated at first, but eventually they appreciated far beyond the original value. These are the exception though, not the rule

        • +2

Nobody buys these for their resale value. That's the $$$$ luxury end of the market.

        • Do people seriously buy a Seiko as an investment?

I (stupidly) bought a Tag a (fair) few years back and got sick of it after 3 months. Would be lucky to get 10c on the dollar back on it I'd imagine.

      • A lot of them are homages

        Sea-gull has entered the chat

        • yeah I've always been a fan of Sea-gull. Almost bought one of their chronographs years ago. Still thinking about getting one tbh

    • I'm sure you've noticed but aim for 50-70% off RRP (which is a joke with citizen and Seiko).

  • Looking for a replacement to my everydayer.

This is the look in going for
    https://www.davidjones.com/product/seiko-mens-sports-100m-bl…

Thoughts on this watch, and the price?

    • I assume not divers or sports chrono style then? Because there's a few options.

That one isn't too bad - the dial has some interest, sapphire glass, not too chunky @ 39.5mm. I can't find the model number though to tell if that's a decent price or not.

      • +2

The model is SUR515 (thanks, Google Lens)

After a cursory search, the best price might be at Prouds - $325

    • +1

      Cool looking…..not on offer though.

      • That's such a UK term, and I love it.

    • Although not too similar, but starbuy has a black seiko on sale atm if youre interesed. Specs are relatively similar although the size is significantly bigger, coming in at 43mm

      https://starbuy.com.au/seiko-classic-mens-watch-ssb415p/

    • I bought another variation SUR517P. Mine is more casual-looking, that's why I prefer it. The strap was ok, but I've a small wrist, so I replaced it with this as this set has two straps, one regular and a smaller length strap. Now, the watch looks quite sharp.

  • Sea-Gull 1963 ST1901 homage might be better option from AliX.

        Non-original GIV brand https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001304377435.html?
(After spotting brand name is 'GIV' under spec tab, I searched GIV and found the official GIV store).

Non-original GIV brand by GIV Official Store https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003198600983.html?

Original by Sea-Gull Official Store https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000252492975.html?

        • It's a bit of an out there recommendation. Though, not entirely a surprise given the username.

For anyone seriously considering this recommendation, the Sea-Gull 1963 is a manual wind chronograph. I would put it much further into watch enthusiast territory.

Here's my old comment on it with a bit of history - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/13884592/redir

          • @ihfree: You are one of the trolls here. My username says much more than yours. Feel free to rant on my comment. You will learn that knowledge is free and open there for anyone. It is not your property. You will learn to digest it. Good luck.

            • @[Deactivated]: Get your pocket watch? I'm thinking of getting my solid silver one serviced.

        • Thanks a lot. I've been wanting one of these.

Do you think $160 is a historically good price for the "non-official" st1901?
Also, would you personally feel comfortable buying from the "GIV Official Store" when it hasn't sold many (any?) of this watch? I don't have much exp on AliX

          • @lbreav: Nope! GIV looks to have hardly any feedback.

I'm not 100% on where is best to buy one currently. I'd recommend having a look at the link to my old comment on the topic and maybe looking at some watch forums.

    • +1

You have to be careful where you buy those from, a lot of fakes around, a lot of people got burnt trying to buy the cheapest one and ended up with a POS Quartz knock off.

I got the 38mm acrylic no lume and recommend this store: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001304377435.html

Used to love watches, but after getting a smart watch it's kinda like going back to a dumb phone. I suggest you try the GT Pro 3

Now we just need someone to bring up the old quartz vs auto argument as well.
