    Thanks OP

  • Hey guys, just started to get interested in this stuff.

Can anyone recommend a tool kit or tools? Don't really have a budget at the moment, but don't mind spending some dollars if it makes my life easier.

    Cheers.

I would suggest a cheap $5-10 nipper for first cut and a dspiae st-a or even st-x if you can find it here for the second cut close to the surface or even flushed with the surface (look for the two cuts nub cleaning method)

Then get some sand paper or sand sponges. I sand from 600-1000/1500

If you want the best of the best, then go with god hand spn-120 for the second cut and get gunprimer raser or their set for cleaning the nubs

      • Appreciate it, mate. I'll look into it!

I'd say that a decent set of nipper like the Tamiya Sharp Pointed Cutter here would be a must: https://www.amazon.com.au/Tamiya-Sharp-Pointed-Cutter-74035/…. This tool can be used for cutting the parts off the runners.

Then if money is not an issue then invest in a Godhand Nipper 5.0 SPN-120: https://www.amazon.com.au/Ultimate-Nipper-Plastic-model-GH-S…. This basically will clean up the nub marks from the plastic parts that you just cut off from the runners. Also these go all sales for $52 from time to time on Amazon JP via AU so keep an eye out. Normally local hobby store might have them on sale as well.

Also to ensure that you clean up the nubs completely, get a hobby knife from Daiso because some clear parts might require some fine cutting skills. Get a set of glass files as well to sand down the nubs for the best results.

Invest in a bunch of panel line pens as well: https://www.amazon.com.au/Gundam-Gm01-Black-Fine-Value/dp/B0…. Not those listings as you can get one for under $10 at your local hobby shops. One pen should last you a loooong time. Black is safe but you can experiment with other colours as well.

That's about it for beginners really. Some of the stuffs I listed might not even needed for beginners but I found out they will become useful at certain points anyway.

      • Appreciate for the detailed repsonse. Looks like I'll keep an eye out for the Godhand to go on sale! Thanks!

        • A few months back, amazon jp had it for sale for just $50ish 🙈

  • I've never done a Gundam kit and don't know anything about it but they look interesting/fun, would the Bandai Hobby Kit Mg 1/100 Zeta Gundam Ver.Ka be ok for a beginner with a bit of modelling experience from a long time ago?

Better if you start with HG to practice on cutting nubs properly

Big W has the entry grade gundams for $15. They're good kits to see what is involved.
