Have had two automatic machines before going to a manual one.

Both the automatic machines end up with coffee in every nook and cranny from their automatic mechanisms.

With a manual one, the only place the coffee goes is into the tamper bit so it’s super easy to keep clean.

What two did you have? I recently got a gaggia cadorna.

Had my De Longhi for about 5-6 years now, still going strong. I think it's a mistake to pay for the milk frothing parts (I did), I never use them and they're messy to clean up.

The bean to cup grind is so much better than nespresso capsules, and just a button press on the way to work, and I'm off with my thermos.

Let me put the juxtaposition, I highly recommend the machines, in my own experience. I must put the plastic things in the dishwasher once every 2 months, my experience is really different, I have found that it doesn't need any maintenance at all.

      • On the Delonghis you need to rinse the brew group (2 weeks), and remove and clean the shower screen (twice a year). If you pull apart the brew group and lube the o rings it will last >15 000 shots.

        • +1

What's the shower screen that needs to be cleaned twice a year? I clean the brew group every week (we use it a lot).

Yeah not as nice. Well my opinion

@souths123: You must stop receiving joy from coffee unless it’s done in the approved manner.

If you don’t know what the approved manner is, simply wait and you will be corrected.

I got one 1 month ago for 699, will return it within 90 days anyway, try it for free.

    • Howd you find it?

      • Philips promotion, 90 days not happy full refund

        • +1

What was your particular issue? Did you play around with settings etc?

          • -7

@maxwellish: I just need a machine before Black Friday or Christmas sales.
I have changed the water temp and grinder, better coffee than 7-11.

              better coffee than 7-11.

Boiled dirt tastes better than 7-11 coffee.

    • Don't you have to pay for return shipping back to Philips?

        • +17

You are the reason why we can’t have nice things.. also, dog act!

  • +3

Just need a machine to drink it for you too.

    • That's 50% more expensive?

    • +1

We have that delonghi at work and I can’t stand it. The milk container requires cleaning at seemingly random intervals, so you get halfway through making your coffee only to find that the machine refuses to give you milk. And the milk it does produce is too frothy for even a latte, and is generally very tepid temperature wise. Free coffee is free coffee, but I wouldn’t spend my own money on it.

      • Aren't you supposed to clean the milk container by pressing the clean button after every usage? Or at least before you put it back in the fridge?
You are putting the milk container in the fridge after using it right?

    • We have both machines. Magnifica with steaming wand is miles better machine and can be purchased for around $750. Philips still makes good coffee but Delonghi makes even better coffee than my Gaggia classic did.(big call I know)

  • +2

One of these at Cashies (SA) for $129. Seemed a good price.

    • -1

It is, but there's a lot that can go wrong with fully auto machines, particularly if they haven't been cleaned and maintained properly. Also coffee quality can suffer in clapped out machines.

      • +2

        Indeed…I service them!
Biggest issue is o rings and lube in the brew chamber, followed by not descaling, followed by a rogue cockroach.
Check on line, there should be a way to check the number of coffees its made. If its around 5000 or less…good to go. Ive done a few 20 000 cup delonghis.

    Owner of 4300 here.
Would recommend Delonghi over Philips for automatic coffee machines.
Better brew unit, easier to clean and maintain.
    Unnoticeable taste difference.

  • +5

We've got the model down without the latte-go option (it's got a "steam wand"). We went back from Rancilio Silvia to this because got tired of the pfaff and mess of fully manual.
Perfectly happy with the Philips for a quick, no effort coffee at home. My coffee isn't winning any awards - but I'm happy with it.

  • +7

Why this, very easy to clean milk container, easy to fill water, easy to refill beans, easy to clean coffee access and waste waster. easy to get quick coffee.

Very quick coffee, step 1) turn on machine (5-15 sec), 2) not required: during this time I use a cup so initial water clean doesn't go in water catchment area. 3) after that place a clean cup and I press cap as start making coffee 4) straight away I attach milk container and pour milk 5) after milk frothing is done, I remove the milk container and clean it. 6) by this time coffee is done. I really like the quick process and least hassle of the machine.

Why not this, only con I found with this machine was that full cream milk froth is foamy not a think froth. Depending on setting it does a quite a chunky size milk foam, may be I need to collect foam milk in another container and then tap and pour. not sure. WORK AROUND, not for everyone. I started using Soy milk and froth is very nice.

Side note: There is very little froth with Almond milk.

My recommendation: Buy this machine and it will pay itself off in no time. Simple rough maths, about 100 to 150 coffee's and you have paid for the machine. Coffee beans are about 30-50c per cup.

    Any questions just ask.

    • Do you find the cappuccino setting to 'frothy'?

Im a flat white kinda guy and its not offered on this model. Not sure if it would really make a difference?

      Thanks

      • I have the 4300 and am a flat white guy too so was disappointed at the amount of foam that it produces in all milk based coffees(and no options to reduce it)- that being said, I'm used to it now and overall quite happy with mine(had it for over a year now doing at least 2 cups a day whilst WFH) Apart from some minor niggling things which are well outweighed by the simplicity of use of the machine.

I have had creeping thoughts of going next level and getting the new Breville Express…but can't quite justify it just yet.

    • Philips 4300 was on sale for 799$ few days ago.

Considering only 150$ difference (this for 549 and 4300 for 799 when on sale), would you recommend to spend $150 more and get 4300?

P.S. my colleague has 4300 and he is happy.

      • Didnt know that was for sale but isnt any more. Damn.

  • +1

Shame it doesn't make a simple latte which means it's either frothy cappuccino or black if you want fully automatic. That is a huge downside to this model. I will stick with My Delonghi Magnifica for now where I have to manually do the milk with steam wand.

  • Philips Service Note:

Under warranty I have replaced the milk container and I can say based on my experience that Phillips service team were amazing.
    1) One phone call,
    2) emailed all the info,
    3) few weeks later part arrived at no cost.

Pulled the trigger on one. First time coffee machine owner so hope it goes well.

    • I pulled the trigger too.

I bought a sunbeam Cafe Barista last week, and Its completely shite I shouldnt have tried to go cheap. (Previous used pods or sachets but want real coffee)

    • +1

Mine arrived, and very happy with it.

      How did you find it?

      • +1

        Same.

Didn't take long to setup if following instructions correctly.

After a few cups of trial and error, I am definitely happy.

Even the wife reckons it's cafe quality and could hardly tell the difference.

        • Cheers!

  • so this one says “Easily make aromatic coffee varieties like Espresso, Coffee and Cappuccino at the touch of a button”

Need some help here. what does it mean by “Coffee”. If I want, say, Latte or a flat white, I’ll need to buy the upgraded version??
