What's Your Typical Apartment Water Bill Like?

I've just been curious what the average Sydney apartment water bill looks like.

I live in a 2 bed apartment in Sydney with my family of 3, but there's no individual water meter each apartment in our building. So our strata levies covers our water usage.

So my quarterly Sydney Water bill is just fixed costs:

Water service $17.83
Wastewater (sewerage) service $155.46
Stormwater drainage area $7.09
Total amount due $180.38

If you get charged water usage how much is it?

  • That's a good deal you have going. Our water usage is $250 for 3 people per quarter.

    • Interesting. So it's about $70/quarter for usage only?

      • Right.

    • Apartments which are the subject of this post are not individually metered.

What sort of place do you live in?

Printed on A4 paper. Usually in Colour.

Old school. Nice. Mine is a PDF file (also in colour).

Last quarter was $69 for an apartment with 2 people.

    • @Jimothy Wongingtons - I'll leave this one for you.

      N I C E E E E

    • Is that for usage only? Or is that including all the service fees?

      • That’s the quarterly total. In my apartment building we get charged for actual water usage and sewage disposal, no other fees.

The next quarter will be higher though as the profanities increased water and sewage by more than 30%

        • Wow that's cheap!
How big is your apartment? And what are you paying for sewage and usage?

          • @talismansa: Small 1 bedroom apartment. Sewage was $9 and usage was $60.

So our strata levies covers our water usage.

You should able to request a copy of the usage bills for the apartment and find out average usage for a unit and how much per kL that your strata levy absorbs.

We use 50-60kL per person per year. Our local water rate is $4/kL. I don't live in Sydney apartment so my charges are not comparable to yours

I have gone through the water bills for our strata and they're usually between 5000-5500kL per quarter.
      We currently get charged $2.67/kL

There are about 110 units of varying sizes in my building, and I have noticed quite a few have 4 or more adults living in them, eg multi-generational families, and share houses.

So this works out to be about 48kL per unit, or $128/quarter.

      • Yeah to me 48kL/qtr is about three adults living in your unit. I’m actually not sure if babies/kids will use more or less than adults hey.

  • Similar situation to you. Four unit block. My most recent one was exactly $180.38 also.

Usage for the block last quarter was $480.85/192kL

There are 7 adults and 8 kids all up in the block.

    • I'm assuming this also includes the water for common areas such as gardening and carwash?
We have a separate water bill for that unfortunately.

I'd take really long showers if water was unmetered. I rented a townhouse once where the contract said water was included. It had a huge tub and I'd take hot bath daily, kept topping it up with hot water and draining the warm water as I go. Pretty sweet deal. Agent kept sending the water bill each quarter to us, had to remind her every time that it was included in the lease.

    • It's not unmetered in this situation though.

      • Unlucky. This was years ago though, before property prices started getting crazy in Adelaide. Though still sane compared to Sydney.

        • Yeah we're being metered and paying for it indirectly.
And it seems like we're paying for other households excessive use as well.

Mine is the same for an unmetered individual unit in Sydney however note that as an unmetered unit your strata also gets billed for the total water usage for the block as well, which is then obviously divided over the number of units in your complex.

  • Mine looks very similar to that…$173. I am in a Sydney apartment. Like you Strata covers usage and I pay for the service.

  • I live in a complex in Queensland (42 units). Each unit does NOT have individual water meters. The local council will only read the primary meter to the complex. Not many complexs have individual water meters and most councils will only read the the main meter anyway. On our rates notice the council includes a notice "the water consumption charges have been apportioned for the above property in accordance with the Schedule of Lot Entitlements". Hence 1/42 of the consumption charges are charged to each lot. For information my quarterly rates notice charges are Water Service Charge $75.54 Wastewater (Sewerage charge) 178.00 Water Usage $115.35 (my 1/42 share of the total water consumption for the complex)

I live in a townhouse complex in QLD and the water is individually metered. Just me. For the last quarter, 82 days:

    Usage (14kL): $58.76
    Supply charge: $52.80
    Sewerage: $141.55
