    Was going to go all in on EGO, this mower, strimmer, batteries. After reading that other thread and online seems there are way better, more reliable options to go all in on than these :(

    • I’m about to go all in on Ego myself. Which is the other thread you’re talking about? Should i be avoiding Ego?

      • This one. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/803923

        Support, warranty, battery quality.

        • Aldi will sell their ferrex mower in a couple of weeks. It's not electric, but I believe they have good reviews, I think I'll go with that one

          • +1

            @jrchurvnjef:

            It's not electric

            There are huge differences between petrol and electric mowers.
            Petrol units are worse to use in every possible way except raw power - they're heavy, they stink, they're loud, they make you breathe exhaust fumes, they need servicing every so often, and you need to refuel them.

            • +2

              @Nom: Nah, who on earth waste money on servicing mower? It's not a car travelling 20,000km a year, I got a 30 year old Honda I never done anything on it except putting petrol, and a pair of blade few years ago and it only needs 2 pulls to start if it haven't been used for 6 months.
              Granted petrol mower is obsolete, heavy but still have plenty of life in it, if you're forking out for a new one then this win over the $649 Honda. But I doubt anyone would say the same for other 40v one, they're piss weak if you try to cut it 5mm from the ground.

              • @lgacb08: Still got my dads old Honda. Clean the air filter twice a year. Starts first pull every weekend but I have replaced the blades twice over 28 years after letting my brother in law borrow it

            • -4

              @Nom: Refuelling takes 1 minute.
              Wear appropriate PPE, same as en electric. Gloves, glasses, footwear and hearing protection.

              Lithium batteries are very dangerous for idiots. Same as petrol.

              They stink? So does everything in a workplace, a home, from a printer to a kitchen. Don’t get me started on how noisy kids and dogs are and they stink too.

              I use combustion and electric powered tools for different applications but you’re just an ass

    • Whats the better alternative?

      • +1

        Thats the bit I haven't figured out yet. This EGO offer, plus the redemption offers means means can get in cheaper with batteries and stuff. But, have a look on some tradie forums, gardeners etc. A lot of hate. Terrible service and warranty and batteries not lasting long at all (and pricey to replace)

        • There actual products are really well rated and often near or at the top of their class. They have always been a leading player in mowers, their 18" chainsaw is just about the best electric saw on the market, their whipper snippers have been a long way ahead of rivals for their mechanism to feed the line in (even rapid reload is great). The batteries do seem to be the weak point and given the expense of replacements that is a bit of an issue, I've got 2 batteries and they both have been a bit temperamental, my 2.5ah frequently won't charge above 25% until I then run the battery flat and it charges full again, have a similar issue with my 5ah battery but if they are fully charged there are no issues.

          I'm not sure if I would buy and EGO mower or a Milwaukee mower, they both rate very well, Milwaukee is more expensive but their batteries have a great reputation and I've never had any issues with them.

          • @donkcat: Eh. I've got ego stuff, it's actually really great and I can't fault it at all, other than the old version of the 42 inch mower which I feel lacks power. Their blower, line trimmer, hedge trimmer, and hedge are all fantastic. No issues with batteries either.

          • @donkcat: Appreciate the insight. Yeah, like for like Milwaukee seems to be more like $1700-2000 which makes it no worth while. Replacing a 5ah battery every 3 years over 12 years is still cheaper with this deal.

      • Makita 40v but you pay for it

    • FWIW I have an ego line trimmer, hedge trimmer and blower. Bought the line trimmer as a kit with a 1.5Ah battery + charger from Masters so I guess about 8 years ago, then stocked up on spare parts when they closed down as I was afraid they'd be hard to source and that I'd need to buy them from Amazon in the states, but happily found Trade Tools selling them and picked up the hedger, and because I had a 800m corner block I would have to recharge the battery so decided to pick up a blower kit with 2ah battery + charger. After getting the second battery, I have always been able to start the line trimming, and put the other battery on the charger at the start, then when the first goes flat, swap them over. They've all been brilliant. The line trimmer replaced a Honda 4 stroke and I noticed no loss in power, its true what they say about Ego's 56 volt power. I get a way neater edge to the lawn using the line trimmer in a vertical position than I ever did with the Honda, and no vibration in my hands or worries about burning myself through accidental contact with the hot engine next to my ear the way I can position the Ego. The blower was expensive but it's super powerful. My only regret is it doesn't do vacuum/mulching and we have a ton of leaves at the new place. I've had the hedge trimmer and blower for about 5 years now I guess, maybe 6. None of them have skipped a beat. I think maybe the batteries might be starting to not hold as much charge, but it's not at a point I'd worry about replacing them since I have the two. Also before buying, I read about people breaking their ego batteries or chargers by forcing them on without making sure they were aligned, so I've always been careful to line it up before applying any pressure, and they haven't skipped a beat in all this time. No regrets with Ego whatsoever. Of course I haven't needed to use their service so I can't speak to after-sales service, I'm not sure whether that's a pro or a con! Oh yeah, never needed to fit the replacement line trimmer head I bought when Masters was closing down. The first one is still going strong. Still feeds the line better than the Honda used to.

  • Good find.

    They're also matching the backpack blower kit which is half price at $424.50 and the hedge trimmer kit for $279

    • And this line trimmer kit at $199 (half price), which is what you'd usually pay for the skin alone. Might snap that up too.

      edit: actually looks OOS just about everywhere. you seem to be able to back order it if you're willing to wait.

  • Hmm. I have the 42 inch mower but feel it lacks enough "grunt" to cut through Kikuyu that's more than a week or two old (yes, I know I'm bad). Would this be better or do i probably need to go for a newer model?

    • +1

      Get one of the twin bladed Select Cut models. No real issues cutting longer grass with it in my experience unless it's like a month or more in summer then it cuts out if you try and smash it down really quick. The Makita 40v is a beast in comparison

      • Cheers, that's what I'm thinking but the price of this is very tempting. Just not sure if it'll be an upgrade in the way i want.

  • Bought one to pick up at Ballarat. I have the middle sized self propelled but needed an extra battery. Getting a larger mower for $300 extra was a no brainer.

  • +2

    Tools warehouse has this mower for $599. Maybe can get a price match or price beat from a local retailer.
