Food Safe Polish for Wooden Kitchen Items

I have some wooden kitchen utensils like chopping board, spatula etc. However, due to being cleaned in the dishwasher, they have lost all their sheen. I was wanting to find out what can be used to polish these items? I saw some items on Bunnings' website, however they seem expensive.

Is there an alternate to these expensive products?

Google: how to season wooden spoons.

I think the standard is food safe mineral oil but fractionated coconut oil works too and can be picked up at the supermarket.

I have some coconut oil in the pantry. Not sure if it is fractionated

If it’s the type that is solid at room temp then no. Fractionated oil stays in liquid form.

This is the stuff you want.

        • Thanks. Will try the one that you have linked. The one I have is solid currently.

  • You could try bees wax or Gilly's citrus chopping board oil. The oil goes a long way and lasts quite some time.
Be careful as some oils go rancid

If you've been putting the board in the dishwasher, I'd suggest sanding it down before oiling. And stop abusing it :)

  • Google hardwax oil - easy to apply, food safe and hard wearing.

  • Orange oil

  • Food grade mineral oil, e.g. baccarat-butchers-corner-wood-board-oil

    Grange oil

  • Wood is naturally antibacterial. I just scrub mine with soap, give it a rinse, then let it air dry. Dishwasher probably unnecessary, all that heat and water.
