Atari Pro Vs Atari VCS

So the new Atari unit is released tomorrow at $199 at JB.

Is this any better or any advantages over a VCS?

Which is better and easier to use, etc?

  • New Atari model has rgb, which adds at least 69 horse power.

Thanks JW. I still have my original 2600, and a VCS (2021). I just don't have time to fiddle.

I'm waiting for the Commodore 64.

  • Well at least this isn't $850 like the VCS. Still not good value at $200

  • No love for the retro for your old carts. https://www.ebgames.com.au/product/atari/299978-atari-2600-c…

  • I paid $299 for my VCS. :)

  • The MiSTer project is the one to get, until an even better FPGA comes out. A lot more than $200 but it's accurate hardware emulation.

    • any links etc?

      • To give you an idea, you're looking at like $1,000 https://ultimatemister.com/product/ultimate-mister-pro/

Plus time spent learning how to set it up. And sourcing controllers and adapters.

But it is apparently hardware accurate for old consoles. It's still emulation, but it's hardware emulation. It can do NES and SNES and stuff no problems too, any old popular console there will be cores for.

I can't afford that kind of scratch myself. But as soon as it can handle PS1 and N64 games perfectly I'll get one. Probably years from now when a more powerful mass produced FPGA is available. Then again, I can just get an actual N64 and PS1 and get mod chips/flash carts. It's not easy being into retro games and wanting the "perfect" solution…

And I'm just assuming there are good Atari cores for it, might want to read up on that too.

Its not a true Atari machine if the joystick doesnt break after 5mins of use

They are two different devices. The VCS (2021 model, not the original one from the 70s) is a modern console, which can play retro games but also new games. It can also run other operating systems, so can be set up to runs something like Batocera, giving you access to emulators for all sorts of retro consoles. The new Atari 2600+ emulates only a 2600 and 7800, and only runs off carts. You can't download any games for it, or put any games on an SD card or USB to play on it. So basically you need the old (and some new) cartridges to play.

  • What, no paddle controllers?

  • Here are a few more videos about the gamestation Pro

  • Needs Activision games. :'(
