Any Good Credit Card Deals?

Hi all,
As a beginner for credit card business, I'm hoping to get some advice on choosing my first credit card. I looked at couple of posts in Ozbargain but thinking to advice from community here.

A bit about my situation - I'm a PR with an income around $105,000 annually. I applied for a Kogan card last year but was surprisingly rejected, likely due to not having permanent residency ( I got PR this year).

Now that my home loan application went through, I'd like to try for a credit card again. My spending each month would likely be $1,000-$1,500 on groceries, bills, gas, etc.

Ideally, I'm looking for a card with:

  • Decent sign-up bonus (Qantas points, or cashback)
  • Ongoing rewards accumulation
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Travel insurance protections
  • Car rental coverage

As a first-time cardholder, I would appreciate any specific recommendations on easy approvals and benefits. Please let me know if any particular cards come to mind that could suit my situation. Thanks so much for your advice, in advance!

ANZ and NAB seem to have the better ones at the moment.

    • Thanks

Especially check for deals tagged with "Credit Card" and you can work out whether these are suitable for you from the comments.

Australian here but still got rejected for Kogan credit card, twice. I suspect Ruslan might just have something against me…

  • Also on Quantas site there are different cards - https://cardsandbanking.qantas.com/compare-credit-cards

    • Thanks

  • ANZ Black. Cancel after getting your signup bonus points.

    • Thanks

    • Do they actually refund prorata annual fee?

      • Usually the offer is zero annual fee for the first year. It was for me last year, anyway

Annual fee free cards have been pretty scarce this year. The latest deal is ~$325 annual fee for the black

          • @tobi3421: Westpac & St George usually offer 1st year $0 fee if you are existing customer. Just need to apply for their transaction/saving account first for 3 months or so before apply for credit card.

  • A lot there to choose, I think Bankwest has what you are asking for (point, no international fee, travel insurance). But I personally will not pay $200+ annual fee.
To earn point > churning is a better way. Eg. ANZ or NAB
Foreign transaction fee, if not too much > can use a debit card instead. Eg. ING no international transaction fee
and one for everyday use with decent reward + travel insurance + no annual fee. I'll go for HSBC platinum then HSBC premier. But their app is useless, way behind the technology today.

    • Thanks, will look into them

  • Hi,

Have something similar to ask for.. however this is the intended plan of action:

    1. Pay for a car $25K via credit card in the next 2 weeks or so, fully pay off the amount in the next billing cycle using 50 days grace period.
    2. Get the sign up bonus points + bonus points on minimum spend of $ 20k-$25K.
    3. By end of January plan to book flights to USA travel for 2 adults + 1 child using the same card. Already have roughly 80K qantas points so would be using them as well in combination to points accumulated by car purchase and sign on bonus.
    4. Use the cards insurance during travels.
    5. If there are no international transaction fees on the card, use this to spend overseas.
    6. If not, cancel the card within next 4-6 months after above is achieved.

Will be fully paying off the outstanding balance each month so dont have pay any interest.

Im with Westpac so most likely would not have to pay annual charges on their couple of CC products.. if this helps.

What options would you recommend ?

    • For points 2 & 3, unfortunately, if you would like to use any bonus points you receive for a credit card you plan on taking out in December, there is a high chance you will not receive your points in time to book a flight in January.

Points usually drop on the first statement period after you have reached the minimum spend. So best case scenario, you will get your points at the end of January or early Feb if you meet all the requirements. This is not guaranteed as the banks can make you wait the whole 3 months to receive your points. So keep this in mind.

Depending on your arrangement with Westpac you may not have to pay for the annual fee (if you have a home loan bundle or wealth package). If not you will pay a reduced fee so still will be good value to get a Westpac credit card. If you don't plan on holding the credit card for very long, Westpac is also pretty good with refunding you your annual fee, but again, this is not guaranteed.

Finally, in your case, I would recommend getting the Westpac Altitude Qantas Black or the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black. ANZ is the better value card if not banking with Westpac.

Like always cancel the card as soon as you don't need to be using it and take out another card to keep accumulating points.
