Amazon Subscribe & Save with Gift Card Balance

Has anyone in the last 5 weeks set up a Subscribe and Save and had it susccessfully charge to your Gift Card Balance (both the initial and subsequent deliveries)?

I’m in a fight with customer support and despite the Support pages saying it should do that, they are all of varying beliefs on whether it is possible.

Just need to know if it’s just my account or if it doesn’t work for anyone. Thank you :)

I just did a Subscribe and Save, and was able to pay using gift card balance. Hope this helps!

    • And each subsequent dispatch has charged to your balance too?

      • You probably got a message with the subject: "Information needed: update payment to complete new subscription".

It wants you to nominate a debit/credit card in case you have insufficient gift card balance in future. However, you can still check the box that says "Use gift card balance if available". In fact, the box is already checked. Go through this step and submit.

Now, if you go and look at the subscription details for this item, the payment method will be the card you choose, however, the option "Use gift card balance if available" will be set to Yes.

Having said that, I have yet to take delivery of a subsequent dispatch. @OMGJL is saying the same thing below, I think, that you can make it take payment from the gift card balance in future.

        • No, I didn't get that at all. It just doesn't even offer the option at all. It's blank.

    no issue for me too

Subscribe and saves have always been deducted from my gift card balance without issue for me. You may want to cancel the subscribe and save and re subscribe, making sure you tick the "Use my gift card balance" box.

    • I’m trying not to go into the 2 week long debacle but yes, I’ve done all the troubleshooting possible, short of creating an entirely new Amazon account just to try on there.

fine for me too, though I had to change the subsequent delivery payment method to giftcard at one stage, but that could be because I cancelled one of the other delivery address and it automatically bounces.

    • And you were able to change it yourself? You didn’t need to contact customer support before each delivery to have them change it in their system?

      • nope didn't have to, just did it on my own on their payment setting page.

Works for me also. No problems on the last three orders

No problems with initial ones. Always cancel afterwards so never had subsequent ones.

I've found that I sometimes need to go back and select gift card from the preferred payment method. With subscribe and save it can revert back to your default credit card for weird reasons, for example, if you add a new gift card balance later. The interface to select gift card balance in select and save isn't great. I find I often need to focus in order to make sure I'm doing it right.

    • Yes I paid by gift card initially in the original transaction but all S&S attempts after have not even offered it as an option …. the section is just completely blank, and the subsequent dispatches wouldn't allow me to change it myself. Depending on which customer service person I spoke to (5 so far) … they all had a different take on it.

It looks like you are correct. I actually just checked my last delivery and it appears that it was charged against my credit card.

        My settings look like:

Your subscribe & save items > settings (menu near the top) > payment method (listed as credit card) > click on "change" and on the next screen the box is ticked on "Always use your Amazon gift card balance when available", which it appears is not actually a thing.

        • Yep, it doesn’t seem to matter which device or browser type I tried it on, or whether it was after a delivery or before, what the card type is, what the product is, how much balance I have….. honestly, I tried it all!!

I can't even set up my first S&S with gift card balance payment now.

Ye it’s a real mess. I filed multiple complaints through all communication options and no one has given me a solution. If you work it out, let me know!

I saw on a forum the same thing (it started a year ago I'm assuming in the US). Perhaps its permanent now :(
I dont have prime, but a work around is to add the item to cart as normal price then check s&s at the checkout. If you dont have prime then it will try charge you shipping unfortunately.

        • In my case I was able to make the initial ones but not the recurring payments, but it's good to know should it be an issue for me in the future. At this stage I'm just avoiding Amazon where possible and price-matching at other retailers.

          • @Buyer0fBargains: Are you able to make initial ones now as of today? I was fine to make them at first but noticed today wont let me. I have a feeling it's going to be a permanent change thats rolling out now.

@attalisie: No not today, I'm basically not shopping with them at all. But they can penalise accounts they feel "abuse" the subscribe and save so if you have made and cancelled a few in the past, maybe that is what has happened?

              • +1

@Buyer0fBargains: I had a look on family accounts and they can't do it either, some never have done S&S before either!

                • +1

@attalisie: Well then it's just good old Amazon being a dumpster fire. It's exhausting!

                  • +1

@Buyer0fBargains: I reckon all accounts will be having this too so people will only just start to notice! If I order over $59 then its fine and if I had prime it would also be fine by selecting S&S only once already at the checkout

                    • @attalisie: I think they will sneakily make the change so that all accounts eventually have the same. I have Prime so i can seemingly make the initial subscriptions but it's still made no difference to the recurring ones so that's a deal breaker for me.

@Buyer0fBargains: Agreed, thats sneaky allowing the first order. I wonder how many people dont notice the recurring orders are charged to credit card and not gift card
