[NSW] OzBargain 17th Birthday - Epping Meetup - Thursday 9 November 2023 at Penang Cuisine at 6:30pm

Come and celebrate OzBargain's 17th birthday!

Scotty will be sponsoring the event and we will hopefully have some new OzBargain t-shirts to hand out.

A $5 fully refundable deposit via Beemit (@poulpe) is required to secure your spot to the event. (Please write your OzBargain username in the “what?” field when you make the transfer.)

We will be eating at Penang Cuisine (32/74 - 76 Rawson St, Epping). Parking is available in the council carpark next to Coles.

There is a maximum capacity of ~30-40.

27/10/2023 update:
The event is now full! Please don't send anymore deposits. Will let you know if we get any cancellations/if spots open up.

2/11/2021 update:
For those who have sent a deposit/secured a spot, we will be pre-ordering our dishes. The following are the dishes you can choose from. I have been informed that they are all peanut free and can be made vegetarian. Please PM me your order by end of Monday 6 November 2023. I'll send them our order the day after. Thanks!

    @Clear I believe you're free on this night? ;)

Epping's a bit of a hike for me (and a shit place for parking) so I'm a maybe for now

    • +1

Can always park next to Coles in council carpark or under Coles.

    • Yep about an hour after I land. Epping seems far though.

      • You'll have to change at Central to get to Epping.

      • +1

You get to experience the driverless metro though!

        • +4

First time I went up to Macquarie park I didn't know about it and was quite shocked to see. Never knew such a thing existed.

          • +3

            @Clear: I'll pick you up

            • +4

@sunnyc: But my mum told me not to get in a stranger's car. Unless they have candy of course.

      • Take Newcastle express train from Central station.
        20-minutes.
        2 stops: Central - Strathfield

  • Defs coming if it's in my local suburb.

What's at Epping though? Epping hotel? BCD Tofu House?

    • +1

Epping is close to Eastwood - one side is Koreatown of Sydney (not sure why not Strathfield) and another bigger better side is its Chinatown. You can also go to Top Ryde city, for the best banh mi, just outside Woolworths. I personally like one in Lim's Hot Bread Eastwood.

      • Davelle’s Bakery in Epping has one of the best banh mi I’ve ever had, better than some of the ones from Cabra actually. I only had Lim’s a couple of times but it was better than that one as well.

But I agree there’s not much at Epping that’s suitable for decently sized groups except maybe the hotel or a few places along Beecroft Rd.

  • Uhoh I voted no even though I was supposed to see clear 🥲

    • +2

You can change your vote on this poll.

      • oh im such a boomer. thanks for the headsup - have changed it :)

  • Waiting for the location. I think I can come 🙂

  • +3

I'll attend this event and currently discussing potential prizes with stores.

  • keen . looking forward to it

  • +1

I think parking is the most important factor. try to find a place that allows many free parking spots?

  • +1

Location has been added to the event.

    • +2

Ooh I do like a good Char Koay Teow.

Guess I could park outside my cousin's house and walk 45 minutes ha. Or at Coles or leave it back at work. I'll rock up

      • +1

Nice! Yeah it's a nice, small restaurant but has some pretty authentic Malaysian food!

        • +1

It's also on my 'Want to go' list in Google Maps!

Just sent through my $5 :)

        • +1

It has gone downhill a lot from the days when it was malaysian owned. The original owners chef was far superior especially for the laksa and the chicken curry. I used to go multiple times a week back then.

          • +1

            @lonewolf: I haven't been in a while actually. I guess we'll find out.

            • @dust: Its still not terrible but sadly just not the same for the malaysian dishes, Saying that it has more dishes now and also is open more hours too.

      • +1

@kerfuffle If you like CKT check out Ya Malaysia in Chatswood.

  • Just beemed. Thank you for organising once again!

  • +2

    See you all there 🥰

  • +1

    Just beemed. Let's go 😀

  • +3

Thanks to those who have sent through your $5 deposit. I am checking and writing them down. (Last year I individually PMed everyone who sent through their $5 but that took a decent amount of time so won't be doing that this year but rest assured I have got your name down if you have sent the money!)

  • +1

    Thanks for organising Dust!

  • +1

    Going!

  • Just beemed as well. Thanks for organizing Dust!

  • +8

Quick update, there are just over 20 confirmed attendees for this meet-up. (I will update the post when the event is at capacity so no need to check if the event is full prior to transferring your deposit.)

I've only made a booking for 30 people at the moment but will update it with the restaurant if it looks like we'll go over that. (If that happens, we will likely book out the whole place.)

Also, if you have any dietary requirements please PM me.

I'll post again with the menu/food options once we have confirmed numbers. (Due to the numbers we will need to pre-order food.)

    Thanks!

      scotty included?

      • +3

        Yes.

    • Just paid via Beem. Thanks for organizing.

    Just beemed, thanks for organising!

  • +1

Just beemed as well. Looking forward to it!

  • +2

    Beemed!

    • You coming? Nice

      • +1

Won't be complete strangers after all 😝

  • +3

I have 3 prizes confirmed - working on more. Nothing high value but something.

Also, I'll bring my copy of Thai Honey for those curious ;)

  • +1

I visit here quite often, Are they going to put tables outside? as I am surprised they can fit 30 people in that small place, I would have thought around 15-20 would be the max they could fit.

    • +2

Good question! I've called them and they said they can fit 30 inside and ~10 outside. I've booked for 30 at the moment (which we're getting close to) and can increase it by up to 10 if there's interest.

      • +1

Hopefully it's covered otherwise if it's raining that's some extra flavour to add to the food

        • +2

The outside bit is still indoors (If that makes sense lol).

          • +2

@dust: Yeah, its like a arcade area and still under some cover till you hit the stairs. As there is a walkway / shops above that area. So you will be out of the rain but will get wind coming through.

I am amazed they can fit 30 in there, I wonder if they will readjust the tables.

  • +1

What happens after payment is made? Do we get a message or confirmation? I sent the payment through yesterday but it was my first time using Beem so am worried i stuffed something up?

    • +1

      I got it. Thanks.

  • +1

Just paid via Beem. Thanks for organizing.

  • +1

Just Beemited. Thank you for organising this!

  • +1

beemed, hopefully im not too late

  • Count me in!

  • +4

There's ~4 spots left (waiting for one or two transfers to come though). Will call the restaurant to increase the booking size. Looks like we'll book out the whole place.

Will post about the menu/food options later in the week.

    Thanks!

  • +1

I'm in! Just sent through the $5

  • +2

Thanks for everyone's interest! The event is now full! (If we get cancellations/if spots open up will post here again.) Please don't send any more deposits! Thanks!

    • Thanks for organising. For those who sent deposits previously, how to we know our spots are confirmed?

      • +1

        I've got yours.

  • Hey guys, since i go here often during work lunches anyway, am willing to give up my spot if there are others waiting.

    • Hi Lonewolf,

If it might still be available, could I possibly have your spot?

      • That's not how it works. If lonewolf wants to give up their spot, it should go to the next person on the waitlist.

        • I would prefer to only give up my spot if it goes to an active participant of ozbargain and not someone who is just here for a free meal.

  • -1

I just realised, is this the same place that you organised in Chatswood a few years back?

    • -1

How is it the same place when one is in Chatswood and one is in Epping?

      • +1

        Hahaha.

      • -1

its called owning a franchise that shares the same name?

  • +1

      Cheers boss

    • Sorry for the delay. Chicken Curry Laksa please.

      Thank you.

  • Thanks @dust. Nasi Goreng (chicken only) for me.

  • Sorry dust, chicken curry laksa please.

  • Chicken curry laksa or nasi goreng or any other meal is okay for me. I am not too picky. Sorry, I just read this.

  • +1

Damn, is 2 chicken laksas in 1 day too much? :) . Only did it once before and i was bloated as …… See you guys there tonight.

    • It's fantastic weather for laksa! (I was worried it would be hot and sunny but the storm that came through this arvo will go great with a laksa.)

  • I guess some/several people won't come as it is raining. But I'll come, not even Zeus can stop me :P. See you guys :)

    • I had to leave work under the storm to the train station. Guess I’ll muck around until the event time.

    • +1

Already en route. See you there

Thank you for the organizer (dust), Ozb, Scotty, and everyone that have come to this event. Someone missed a prize because he went home too early :(

Waiting for another photo all together from someone's phone here.

    • Seems like a lot of people missed out on prizes because they didn't show up or went home early 🥲

    • Thanks for being proactive with the camera haha

      • Good memories :) A good way to add more new friends or networking too. Even better if there is Ozb meetup every month for example. It doesn't have to be in a restaurant.

    • Thanks for the photos, and great to meet everyone tonight! Looking forward to meeting people at the Parra event :)

    • +1

@Clear LOL. Where can I get a JV mask?

      • +5

I ordered them from Life Size Cutouts. Uploaded a Jules Verne pic from Google, entered a quantity of 4 and in the notes requested 2 chin and 2 elastic. Arrived in a couple of days express post. SHOPGIFT25 gives 25% off.

A few took them for the other Sydney meetups.

  • +4

Thanks dust. It was nice meeting scotty and all the familiar faces again. Finally met Clear and kerfuffle. Was a blast.

Awesome prizes by Clear and dust from their sponsors.

    Parramatta event next up :)
