Sydney to Melbourne Drive

I'm still relatively new from New Zealand, and I've been thinking about occasionally driving between Sydney and Melbourne as I have friends and family in both cities - going by plane is a bit expensive as I need to also factor in travelling to/from the airport to where I'm staying.

Is there anything I should be wary of in particular? I heard there were a lot of kangaroo road kills and should avoid driving during certain times. Also, are there any toll roads I should be aware of? Any information would be appreciated :)

    • "Mini accommodation" for this distance is stretched out on a roadside bench for an hours nap in the middle. It's not a huge trip. Just don't think about the spiders.

  • Grab a motorbike and go via the C521 and C512.

This is a very easy drive.. just navigate with Google and avoid tolls … Extremely easy with many stops and towns on the way… Done it with only toilet breaks plenty of times… Even easier if your car has auto cruise control

flying is cheaper mate. factor in your time.

  • I'd rather fly than drive unless you have pets to bring along.

  • How about this deal for planning in the future? $80 each way, so $160 in flights. Less than a tank of fuel 1 way!

  • You can also catch a Greyhound bus for cheap, bring a fully charged laptop/phone + power bank

  • It's a very easy drive. We just did it the other day, left at around 945am and got to Melb at 6. Included a number of stops.
