AppleCare+ Monthly Subscription Can No Longer Be Charged to Apple Balance

If you have an AppleCare+ monthly subscription that is paid via your Apple account balance, how long ago did you notice that it was no longer billing to your Apple balance?

I discovered the change a month ago and Apple told me it was the new policy for Australia, but I still can't see anyone else mentioning it on any other platform. I'm wondering now if the Apple CS rep has advised me incorrectly.

  • According to a recent report, Apple has stopped allowing users in Australia to pay for their AppleCare+ monthly subscription using their Apple balance¹. However, users can still use their credit or debit card to pay for the subscription.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

    • Thanks for responding, my question is when others noticed this change was implemented. I know we can still pay with a credit card.

It's definitely in effect as of this month. My sister's AppleCare+ came out of my on-file card on the 10th, instead of her gift card balance. A minor inconvenience, but they really should have sent an email or something about it.

    • I agree. It feels sneaky just changing it without any kind of notice (and I had to go through 3 different CS people before anyone knew anything about it).

  • Last month at least. So it's not just me. I thought I did something on my end

    • Definitely not just you but unsurprisingly few people noticed. They didn’t send anything out or tell anyone. Just changed it on the sly

Well that sucks. I was about to change my payment from PayPal to apple balance because I just discovered I somehow have $28.xx credit.
It was was something like $3 6 months ago and I have no idea where the extra credit came from.

  • How about monthly iCloud storage subscription fee? Still allowed to use from Apple account balance?

    • I just signed up for iCloud earlier this week and it charged from my account balance

    • My last iCloud payment was 29 sept and it came out of my account balance, so fingers crossed it remains but I guess they might change it and not tell us, as they have done with AppleCare.

Getting the discounted Apple gift card(s) when on sale was an economical way to pay for Apple subscription services.
I pay for 50Gb storage which is $1.49/month but can be reduced further a little bit by loading up with discounted Apple gc.
It all adds up. $1.49 seem like peanuts but if you use Apple iCloud until you go to the cemetery.
My calculation would be. Assuming you live until average statistical Aussie age of 83, you will spend at least $1400 for 63 years of usage.
Assuming you start using iCloud subscription at 20 years old.
Then consider cpi, inflation, cost increase yardie yaddie yadda….
I would expect to spend about $1400 -$2000 just on the 50Gb iCloud subscription.
It all adds up. Then if you have a android then it’s another expenditure for a GoogleOne storage.

Nice revenue for Google, Apple ,Samsung , Dropbox, Microsoft etc

Yep, spot on. It was a tiny discount but it ads up and when you are already fretting over COL increases, a few cents each month does matter.

I am going through with Apple on this issue right now. It happened last month which I think was a payment glitch. When It happen again this month I called and find out.

Very bad execution on them not think of people who charge their account balance solely for AppleCare. I have their supervisor on my account now and do a cash out….fingers cross!!

    • Can you please keep me updated? I do the same with my Account Balance (keep it purely for AppleCare, iCloud charges, etc) but I'd like to cash out if they are going to keep it this way. I didn't think to escalate mine to a supervisor, silly me!

I just got off the phone with Apple. They said it's Australian Government Regulation that has changed that no longer allows the Apple balance to be used for just AppleCare+, subscriptions like Apple One or iCloud storage is fine. I've asked for clarification as to why this is the case and why I wasn't informed of the change, because it means I won't keep using discounted gift cards to top up my account as much. It's happen since late September apparently.

    • Did you get any update on this?
