Are Most People Selling Their Cars Dreamin'?

Just looking at the prices of used Mazdas and I feel like most sellers are dreamin if they think anybody will pay that much TBH.

    Why add the gratuitous "TBH"?

    • +1

Yeah true, it doesn't make any difference to the meaning of the sentence.

Unless OP means that usually they're not being honest so it's worth calling out!

  • +2

JB, are you limiting your searches to Tassie cars? You should know that prices here are always 10-30% higher for a given age and mileage. Partly the tourist-trap (buy a cheap car rather than rent) and more limited stock.
I find Vic/NSW cars always cheaper. As I only buy cheap cars (well under 5K) it's never worth pursuing them.

    • +1

I'm actually looking at cars in NSW. :) Not sure why my profile says tassie lmfao.

  • +1

My teen daughter bought her car (Hyundai i20) 2 years ago for 5k and just sold it for 7k. In WA.

  • Good site for info on car pricing is the redbook site..

    https://www.redbook.com.au/

    • looks eerily similar to carsales.com's user interface

      • +3

It's the same parent company! Just like bikesales.com

  • This thread is funny coz I'm looking for a Mazda 6 right now, and the prices are interesting to say the least.
Has to be the right red colour.

  • I was just looking at the prices of RX2s and RX3s myself!

Astronomical. Wish I had bought one in the late 2000s when they were about 25% of what they are currently asking.

    • +1

      RX2/3 =/= mazda 3

mazda 3s are a ubiquitous vehicle seen driving around everywhere, where as rx2 and 3s are old school cars

  • +1

Lots of dreamers out there. Some ads have been up since the start of the year. No genuine seller is keeping their ad up for that long.

  • +2

Used cars have been very expensive over the past couple of years, but remember; Things are only worth as much as other people are willing to pay for them. With the recent inflation and higher interest rates kicking in we can expect to see the market cool off a bit.

  • Its not dreaming if its the market price

  • I think the bubble has burst for overly inflated prices. I was offered new car price for my car but I need it and would have been set back without it.

I can't ever pay RRP on a car, there is always room to move.

Sports car market is starting to get a bit wobbly. Supply and demand has definitely evened out. I sold most of my cars about a year ago to cash out. I had a 987.2 Cayman manual, NC3 MX5 and an old NA MX5. Now I am just sitting on my low mileage S2000 and cheap R.S Megane daily. Ready to pounce on a good 981 or 718 Boxster when a good one hits around 60k.

What I cant believe is Alfa Romeo 4C and Alpine A110 prices. 4Cs were hitting $60,000 pre covid. And Alpines were not far behind. They are good cars. But historically have not held anything against a Cayman or Boxster for depreciation. And I just cant see someone spending more on a 4C compared to a fully specced Cayman S or GTS. 4Cs and Alpines they need to come down. Alfa Romeo Quadrifoglios seem to be falling quick though. They will be an excellent pickup soon. Especially in Montreal Green.

    • Yep! Bought my 4C launch Edition for $69k just as Covid hit. The only 2 listed on Carsales now are $120k+. They've sat for ages though and I don't think the sellers actually want to sell them.

      • Yeah nice. I got my 987.2 Manual Cayman with 40,000kms on it for 56k around the start of covid. Sold it about 6 months ago for 77k (I got a good price for a S2000).
I have seen a few similar Caymans to mine recently sell for around 67k. So essentially a 10k drop happened not long after I sold it.
Base Manual 981 Boxsters were hitting sub 60k prior to covid. But goodluck getting that now. But they did sell a lot. So you never know!

4C Launch Edition is a damn nice car. I think I would prefer a standard car 4C with the leather wrapped dash myself. But I wouldn't complain either way.
Stunning cars! One day I will tick it off my bucket list. I have had a couple of 159s and a Giulietta QV. 4C would be incredible.

        • +1

minimum wage haters negged you, i fixed that.

    • Was looking at a 4C before the price jump.

Got cold feet and missed out. Regretting it.

      • +1

Even before covid. You just dont know how heavy the deprecation is going to be. Especially if its french/italian. I cant blame you for holding off.

        • I should've jumped at the time.

          Such a gorgeous machine.

  • +1

Not just Mazda - should see some of the used Porsche cars
People thinking their decade old cars have only depreciated 20%

  • I'm sure I'll get lynched by people in the comments but I have an 07 Mazda 3 SP23 sedan with 232K km's on it that I'm looking to sell. Yes, the amount of K's on it sounds scary to some people but it's a single owner (me) car and I'm pretty OCD in terms of it's maintenance/care etc. Obviously it has some wear and tear on it (some paint chips on the bonnet etc) but no crash damage and no mechanical issues. I love the car and have since I bought it, only selling it now because I finally bought a new daily. Bottom line, I'm wanting 8 grand for it and it comes with the a good set of 18" Work rims on it along with the original 17's, spare set of pads & rotors and overall a really solid car. I don't think I'm being unreasonable for the price I'm asking but I'm sure based on the crowd that my car is worth $1000 lol

    • +1

I'd say the car is worth closer to $5-$6k, but depending on other choices on the market at the time you "might" get a buyer for $8k.

    • +1

You're going to have to try and put it up on carsales and tell us how it goes….

      • That is indeed the plan

    • I reckon you might get close. But $6k to $7k is probably where its at with a RWC and good rego

  • I've been watching the Mazda 3 used market for a couple of months now. Generally those that start with stupid high prices will either decrease a fair bit until they sell, or simply not sell.

As a side note newer used manual cars are going for bargain rates.

    • I don't know how to drive manual

      • Well yeah, that's why they're going for lower prices. Manual is becoming a dying art.

That said, if you're willing to learn there's bargains out there.

Autos still go for decent prices too. Just because some are initially advertised for stupid prices doesn't mean they sell for those prices.

      • It can be a tricky thing to learn when learning to drive, but probably easier when you can already drive and just have to learn that part.

    • Smaller market as fewer and fewer people can drive a manual.

  • +2

If the price is too high then don't buy. Move on to another seller. The market will adjust eventually and people will learn that no, a car with 50k km has not depreciated just 15% from its new price.

  • My brother has sold 3 cars privately in last 4 months, details are below
    2015 s3 with option 100k km for $33k
    2018 Tucson active x 81k km for $24.5k
2021 facelift cerato gt 40k km for $34k
All are in good condition with service history
It's all just luck I guess, u list it high and leave a bit room for negotiation, and wait for a buyer that doesn't do his or her research before buying it

  • Import rules allow for some decent hybrids that share most components with locally sold vehicles. You get a lot more value even considering shipping and compliance.
Have a look at the Mazda Alexa Hybrid ( Japanese name for Mazda 3)

  • Make a lower offer then. At worse, they can only say no.

    • they just don't respond

      • +1

        Probably too low.

        • +1

Yep. My experience of selling online, both cars and other stuff, is that there's a lot of bullsitters out there who make stupid offers. If it get lowball offers, I often ignore them.

          • +1

@R4: I’ve sold a few vehicles recently. Any offer below a wholesale dealer price I’d ignore.

            • @Brick Tamland: what's a whole sale dealer?

              • @BargainHunterJohnnyB: Car dealers sometimes offer to buy the car. This is a wholesale transaction so you don’t need to worry about a RWC and it’s usually a super easy process.

If a private buyer wants to buy the car for less than wholesale and I need to organise a RWC and deal with all that associated BS then it’s not worth the effort.

      • That's a no then in reality.

  • Second hand cars prices are inflated so the sellers can raise enough transitioning to the overpriced new ones. Covid scrambled car price reality, and it's still oscillating. That said ppl still pay top dollar for a car if it's what they want. Especially one or 2 owners with full service history (which in itself costs way too much, but factors into pricing by way of service history can add a premium)

  • +1

Sold my Mazda 3 2015 with 100k kms on it for 20k during COVID times.

Purchased a brand-new RAV4 for $42,000. I received the car after a year, got an offer of $55,000 for it. Decided to sell it immediately without ever driving it.

  • Sold my 2008 Mazda 3 hatch with 190k for 8k to private very recently. Took two days, suggested price range from car sales was 8-10k. Buyer couldn't shake my hand quick enough, no haggling. For reference, I bought the car 4 years ago for just over 6k. MAZDA so hot right now.

    • sounds like you're cheering - when was it exactly that you sold though?

      • That was two weeks ago

    • I bought an 02 WRX for $8k in 2015, sold it in 2020 and it made money despite me not caring for it at all. Should have kept it around and done it up and cashed in big time tbh.

  • car prices even on the second hand market went up. its just a supply demand situation

  • +3

When someone asks almost new RRP price for a car 5-7ys old with about 100K on the clock, there is something silly going on. Pass.

  • lmao same as me, been looking for is350f sport, corolla, mazda3 and even honda accord euro/civic. They're (profanity) joking with their prices. At least I'm privileged to wait and hold on but others not so much.

  • I noticed the same thing.

Sold a car 18 months ago, and the exact same year and model is $17k instead of $14k.

    Someone's dreaming.

  • With the current state of the economy, most of the sellers are not ready to buy a new car. So they do not really "bleed" while waiting for the right buyer.

  • Yes, I tried to sell my 2011 Mazda 2 for 8k, which was 1k cheaper than the next one on the market. Ended up selling it for 5k and there were still ones being listed for more $$$$.

    • Wow that's quite the discount from original listing. How many km did you mazda have on it?

      • 136k

    • Did you need the money in a hurry? If you were already the cheapest all you had to do was wait.

      • 6 weeks on the market before I sold at 5k

  • In 2020 I was looking for a new car and I was open to the idea of buying 2nd hand, but I found people listing their 2010 Mazda's for ridiculous amounts. Said f it and just bought a brand new car. No regrets at all - safety features are unreal and zero mechanical issues. Would gladly pay a few extra thousand for a brand new vehicle any day.

  • I've been looking for a Mazda 3 as well, the prices are high, I've seen the same cars there many times for months on end which tells me many sellers are asking too much.

I rarely drive so I'm happy just to wait it out. Of course I would rather have a car, so it's still annoying.

I'm hoping the market will correct and get better, maybe in 6 months, who knows… But it does seem like a lot of these cars are not selling, which implies a correction in price down, soon enough.

  • -2

If you want it that's the price.

When selling you always get the angry bargain hunters who tyre kick and waste everyone's time thinking there's some hack they can do.

Then someone normal comes along and just pays asking price.

    • pfft

      • You can get angry about it all you like but if you're patient as a seller someone eventually pays.

Someone's coming out on top, there's plenty of sellers who are door mats as well.

        • +1

          Sounds like you're selling a 2010 mazda 3 with 180000km for 12.5k

  • Bought a car in January. To this day I get notifications about the other cars on my wishlist from the time because clearly they haven't sold

  • I got a Hyundai I20N last week - just over $40k OTR. 2nd hand I20Ns are being advertised for $42-45k. I know it's hard to get this car at the moment but there's no way that I'd pay more for a used car over new.

    • How long did you wait for it to arrive though?

      • I was fortunate to get a cancelled order (finance fell through). Dealer (who I'd previously contacted) called me and said if I wanted it to pay a deposit over the phone straight away. I'm lucky. Another dealer could get me one for December but that was it. Hyundai have reopened their order book but it will be well into 2024 before any are delivered.

What a car BTW. One of the best cars I've ever driven - and I've driven a lot!

        • +1

sounds like you snagged a bargain there mate - good on you

    • Damn dude, whilst marginally slower, that's Polo GTi money.

      • +1

There's nothing else on the market that even comes close to the kit/performance of the I20N for the money. The Polo GTI is nice but not as sharp as the Hyundai and no manual. The Yaris GR is awesome but, damn, that price. The Civic, Golf GTI and Subaru are all very good but too expensive for what you get.

The I20N is such fun to drive. It sticks to the road like glue and the steering feedback when cornering hard is insane. The rev matching button is voodoo magic. Bose sound system, Android Auto, reversing camera etc. First 5 services are $309 each.

        Love it.

        • There was the fiesta st….shame it's gone now. Just sold mine for 34k with around 10000km. Drove both the fiesta and i20 and went with fiesta.
Sold the car as I realised we don't need 2 cars. Drive it less than 5000km last year.

If I go for another one…will probably be the i20n…maybe even the polo. But that will be in a few years when I need a car.

          • @Thinkswithelbow: The Fiesta is a great car. If what still available, I'd have considered it. The Polo is nice, probably a bit more refined than the Hyundai - which is a good or bad thing depending on preference. No manual though - which for me is a must in a car like these.

It will be interesting to see what Hyundai do with the I20N update next year.

            • +1

@R4: Yeah. Manual is a must. I'd only consider the polo if my partner needed to drive it too. She did not enjoy driving manual.

              • @Thinkswithelbow: I get that - manual in 2023 is not for everyone. Fortunately, my partner had no problems with manual. My 20yo son was the only one in his peer group to get a manual licence - and he's always trying to borrow the Hyundai!

                • +1

@R4: Its a shame the new polo gti is automatic only, i had a manual polo a few years ago, easily the most 'fun' car ive ever owned, even tho it was the least powerful.

                  • @DiscoJango: The old school vee dubs were such fun to drive. Showing my age, but I had a mk1 Golf GTI back in the day. No power steering and shit brakes but a hoot to drive, Volkswagen have lost it to a degree when it comes to 'fun' cars. The Golf R probably has it but the cost is insane.

                    • +1

@R4: I also had a mk6 golf r at one stage, i dunno, the car was too perfect, i didnt find it 'fun' to drive. It was fast, but it was too easy, awd coupled with a dsg gear box meant quick launches/shifts and immense grip even in the wet, all you had to do was put ur right foot down and the car did the rest, there wasnt much of a 'challenge' for the driver i guess you could say.

                      • @DiscoJango: Fair enough - there has to be some driver challenge with these kind of cars. I've always wanted to own an R but would never spend that kind of money on a car - that's why the I20N is perfect for me.

  • It's a supply and demand thing, with less than the usual new cars entering supply and less competition.

  • Even with damages to my 12 year old Toyota yaris YR I'm still getting messages online asking for 6k ish and I'm not going even hell bent on selling it… Only posted in a few forums to gain an understanding of what its worth as I chose not to trade it in when I bought my low and behind July 23 model Mazda CX 3. The wait time on that was less than a month so I'm happy.

  • Hi all, i'm trying to sell my 2014 Mazda 3 SP25 GT, first-hand/sole owner, in pristine condition and very low mileage ~20k km. Aside from carsales, what's the best way to sell privately to fetch best sale price?

    • Ive sold a fair few cars and road/dirtbikes. I think ive only sold one or 2 od them through carsales or gumtree.

The rest of them have sold via facebook… Post them in car sales groups and on marketplace.
