Any amount can be specified between $5 and $500.
You can use one of these prepaid Visa cards to buy other discounted egift cards at HCF Thank You rewards.
e.g. spend $94.09 to purchase a $97 prepaid Visa and then use that to purchase a $100 Coles egift card at effectively 5.9% discount instead of the usual 3%.

I didn't try it but you could probably also use it to buy another prepaid Visa gift card at 3% off.
So you could spend $4.85 to buy a $5 visa card and keep recycling it to buy a $19.64 prepaid visa card at effectively 75% discount.
No wonder there's a limit of $500.

I've ordered one to test if it can be used to pay the ATO. Will update when it arrives.

    Edit: Nope. Transaction declined.

      Thank you for your service.

    • Activ VISA series can't be used for ATO from release.

  • What are the restrictions exactly on these and what merchants accepts these? Thanks!

This is functionally no different to an Activ Visa eGift Card sold on Giftz.com.au. It is also functionally no different to an open-loop Activ Visa gift card sold at Woolworths, BIG W, Officeworks, Kmart, Amazon, etc (except for the fact that you do not actually have access to a physical gift card).

Blackhawk Network enforces some restrictions across standard Activ Visa gift cards (for which you can find on the gift card's terms and conditions):

      • Recurring payments
      • Transactions at Automated Fuel Dispensers (e.g. Costco service stations, unattended Ampol service stations, unattended Shell service stations)
      • Transactions at the ATO
      • Over the counter transactions at financial institutions
      • Transactions at ATMs
      • Gambling transactions
      • Transactions at other merchants selling cash-equivalent products (e.g. money orders, stocks, bonds)
      • Transactions where Blackhawk Network believes you are purchasing a gift card or a voucher from a merchant. I point this out, because Blackhawk Network has been known to enforce spending restrictions on Activ Visa gift cards at merchants designated as a supermarket. This is talked about in more detail here.

Additionally, a merchant may choose to not accept an Activ Visa gift card (which would be beyond Blackhawk Network's control). For example:

      • Woolworths automatically blocks you from using an Activ Visa gift card to pay for some gift cards in their stores.
      • Woolworths Group blocks you from directly using an Activ Visa gift card on their online gift card portal.
      • Some merchants (e.g. Bupa Life Rewards) block all prepaid cards, which would mean an Activ Visa gift card would not work.
      • Some merchants mandate your Visa card to pass a 3-D Secure check when you are attempting to make an online purchase, which would mean an Activ Visa gift card would not work. The issue is that prepaid Visa gift cards are not able to support 3-D Secure.

Thanks mate, much appreciated for the in depth reply!

  • Anyone know if these are less prone to hacking than the digital Coles Mastercard ones?

  • Can I buy these using 'digital Coles Mastercard '. And use these to buy wish gift cards from Woolies….

    • edit..re read the @WookieMonster update that woolies gift card portal will not accept this card.

  • Anyone tried to see if this card would work with Brisbane council rates bills , utilities bills (electricity, water) ? Have an upcoming bill due soon.. not sure when the next master/visa promo card will be around soon :(

    • Yep, it worked for me (council)

Also, if you're a member of Australian Unity it's 4% off on this same card (Activ Visa Life's Necessities Digital).

      • Thanks!

Sadly I am not with Australian Unity :(

  • Does the system stop you from buying multiple $500s?

    • Yes.

The gift card portal actually stops you from adding multiple $500 gift cards to your cart (or any amount of gift cards that would cause you to exceed the $500 spend limit). If you try to exceed the limit, you will get an error message saying:

A maximum spend of $500.00 is allowed on LIFE'S NECESSITIES VISA Card in each calendar month. This transaction exceeds that amount and cannot be processed.
