Forwarding Txt Msgs Overseas for 6 Months

I'm heading to Canada for work next year for around 6 months.

I need to keep my au number active in some way so that authentication txt messages will get to me some how. I'm not to worried about calls, but txt is the most important.

I'm gone long enough that I would switch providers for some way to do this. Maybe a carrier that has roaming that lasts for 6+ months? Most I have seen have 90 day limits.

Or I leave a cheap phone in the office plugged in and set it to forward all txts to my Canadian number?

Anyone done something like this before?

Thanks.

[edit] Thanks Community. I'm gonna get a amayasim 365 day sim ($40 / $18 on sale), and then get a $20 international roaming pack which lasts for 1 year, so I can send/recieve txt and calls.

I really appreciate how helpful ozbargain is :)

Felix international roaming is fantastic. Lasts a year, and you can pause the normal subscription while you’re on it.

    • Excellent. I'll look into it.

Can you re-enable it for a month to reset the yearly "counter"?
Looks like you can pause for 242 days max
"*For the first 60 days of being paused, you will only be able to receive incoming calls and SMS, make emergency calls (such as 000) and access the felix website to chat with our Care team. After the 60 days, your service will be restricted to emergency calls only, and access to the felix website for 182 days. After the 182 days, your service will be terminated and unable to be reactivated."

Tossing up between Felix ($25 every 242 days plus $20 every 365 days for roaming pack) and and amaysim's 365 day PAYG ($10) plus roaming pack ($20)

OP, you don't mention what aussie mobile provider you're with, but for the substantial majority of providers your SMS will find you in Canada regardless of whether you pay for a roaming package.

If your provider is amongst the very small minority that go out of their way to ignore what is pretty much a worldwide convention and swapping providers isn't an option, then I'd still be inclined to avoid messing around with forwarding. Just grab a cheap SIM from one of the bigger providers, temporarily update your mobile at your banks, and take that with you.

    • Interesting. Thanks for that. I'll look into it. With boost at the moment.

      • Boost is on the telstra network and owned by telstra. You should be fine to receive SMS.

The thread posted earlier has multiple folk confirming receiving SMS without roaming from various countries, even on prepaid with no roaming pack.

          Boost isn’t owned by Telstra.

Which telco are you currently with? Check their charges, usually there's no roaming charges for receiving text messages. Just be sure to turn off data roaming and get a local sim card.

The starter pack offer may be expired but you can still get the $40 starter pack… at $40 which last for a year. No need to buy roaming if you only need to receive sms. If you ever need to send sms, amaysim roaming is only $20 and last for a year.

Actually, you can still get the $40 starter pack from Amazon, selling for $18
