Uniden UH850S vs UH850

Hi,

Looking at buying a 2 way UHF radio and found that JB hi-fi is having a sale on Uniden radios.

Would anyone be able to tell me the difference between the model 850S and 850? 850S is the more expensive model, but just wondering if the price difference is worth it or not.

Master scan technology - group channel jumping to avoid disruptions.

    • Beat me by 26 seconds! 😂

        Is that you Mrs Muzeeb?

Do you beat Mrs Muzeeb often?

@Thrift: He does… And she'll attest to it being by a lot more than just 26 seconds…

    • Does that mean everyone needs to be using the same model i.e. 850s?

      • No… as long as the radios transmit and receive on the same frequencies, they're compatible. (basically all UHF CB radios legally sold here).
Only when you start using brand-specific features, then you'll need the same radio with the same features.

        • Except everyone needs the master scan feature or whatever it is for it to be worthwhile. In my 4x4 club there’s only a couple of people with similar radio features which means it’s useless to them on club trips, a lot people don’t even have 80 channel radios and still run 40 channel radios. Of course they can still use their fancier radios as basic radios.

I did a comparison of the features and "Master Scan & Rapid Scan" is listed for the UH850S (but not listed for the UH850).

What are you going to be using it for? Car? Walking? There could be better solutions.

    • For traffic control job.

      • Air traffic or road traffic

        • I'd be saying Road Traffic.

But your attention to detail! It is a fair point.

          • @geekcohen: If it's Air then op will need the UH860S+ at a minimum.

            • @Muzeeb: And also commercially certified radio.

@geekcohen: Imagine the road traffic control confusion over UHF in an ozbargain utopia

My last car coming through is a white Camry

30 seconds of confused radio silence then a reply..

Ummm. Isn't every car a white Camry?

      • I would definitely go for the UH850S.

      • Then the external mics might help.

The other factor is weight as you'll be carrying it all day/night and possibly usb charging.

The 2watt GME/Uniden do USB charging but don't come with a mic.

I don't think you would need 5w doing traffic control, and while they usually have a low power mode, most 5w units are a lot heavier than a 2w.

Most TC I've seen use a GME 677 and for good reason - small/light and usb charging.

Whilst that is true, I would be suggesting 5W by default because then it fits all scenarios. Especially when working over a large site.

        • The work suggested 5W

  • Uniden XTRAK 50 Handheld 5W UHF Radio could be an option too.

    • Waterproof
    • Instant replay key to replay up to 6 minutes of received transmissions
    • Torch / SOS
    • 5W TX Output Power

All of which might be handy for a Road Traffic Control Position.

Access 2 QLD Antennas & Satellites have a deal for a lot cheaper too.
