Any Recommendations on an All Rounder Lens (Sony E Mount)

Hi All,

I've recently purchased a sony a7iii second hand and wanted to see what you guys think would be a good all rounder lens

I'm thinking of the tamron 28-75mm f2.8

Any suggestions or advise would be greatly appreciated

Thanks,
Ace.

Really depends what you want. The 28-75 is a good start.

For a single travel lens, the Tamron 28-200 is very versatile and affordable.

Personally, I recently got the 35-150. It is a beast but heavy.

    • Just want a lens to take portraits and maybe also buildings sometimes.

I had thought with a fixed focal length it would be a better option given the price point

This is the only lens I used in travels.

    Budget?

Sony 35mm F1.8 is a good start. If it's not in your budget, a used 55mm F1.8 can be had for around $500 (might be too tight for indoor building shots though).

    • the 55mm f1.8 was gonna be my second lens after the tamron. Also is there a place to buy second hand lenses from? Like Teds?

    Brilliant lens ;)

  • I have both the Tamron 28-75 and Sony 35mm f1.8 (and 55mm, 85mm, 17-28, 20-70 but wouldn't recommend those as a 1st all round lens)

Both are excellent lenses for their price points; 35mm can be picked up used for around $500, maybe $750 for the Tamron v1

I prefer the 35mm for travel as it's much smaller and lighter, and the focal length is decently wide while still being good for portrait photos. Wide aperture is great for the shallow depth of field and low light
Tamron is good for an all rounder, having wide and tele range, but really sticks out being a lot bigger (for travel). f2.8 is decent enough for the shallow DoF but a bit lacking for low light

    Can't go wrong with either

    • Thanks for the info. The Sony 35mm is $764.15 and 55mm is $721.65 at JB. If I had to pick one from those two, which one do you recommend. Also can you let me know where do you buy second hand lenses from? FB marketplace? TED's?

      • I'd go for the 35mm. If you're only buying 1 lens the 35mm will be more versatile; I find the 55mm a bit too narrow / zoomed in so don't use it much but have both Tamrons and the 35mm in my camera bag

I've bought used lenses from FB marketplace and gumtree, but Teds and Georges (and other camera stores) will sell used ones too. Digidirect have decent sales, next would probably be Black Friday

You could walk into one of those stores and try both lenses to see what works with you
