  • The real story really is that if he did this to the average person it would be a 'civil matter' and the police wouldn't get involved, but because it's a corporation then it's a crime.

Rapists don't get that much jail time.

So he failed to make the final payment but Tesla already gave him the ownership papers. Then he sold them knowing he hadn’t paid for them?

Ha ha ha ha. Suck it Tesla.

    • Not so much failed to make the payment as such, he gave them bad bank details and the payment bounced. The american banking system is such a mess for sending funds. There is a reason people still pay bills via cheques!!!

Anyhow back then buyers of Tesla had the 'cash', and it wasn't an issue.

This loophole if you call it that, has been closed. Today its cash up front. Your payment needs to be cleared before you get the car.

        What a novel idea Tesla

        • As I said, the USA banking system is very broken…. and nothing like ours for transferring money electronically. Hence the reason paypal took off and other 'cash' P2P transfer apps in the states.

Heck, they still mail cheques to pay bills in a lot of areas!!! Thats like 1980s way of paying bills.

Did you read to the end of the article?

Looks like they have a $1.13m bill and 4 years in jail coming up to them. Not sure this is the loophole you think it is!

Anyhow, these days payment has to be cleared before you get the car. Guessing because of this person!

    • It's a loophole because he was only caught with the insurance fraud.

      • I'm pretty sure Tesla noticed he hadn't paid when the electronic bank transfer request failed. Hence why he used a different name each time. In the land of the USA, bank transfers are a strange and special beast, like an electronic cheque that can bounce! They are special over there.

Tesla used to debit your 'account' on pickup day. in 99.999999999999999999% of the cases the funds cleared without issues.

Anyhow as I said Tesla USA requires cleared funds before letting you drive away, just like Australia does too. So this 'loophole' is closed.

    • I'd vacation in "gaol" for 9.6 months for a Tesla. I could catch up on my reading, get some exercise in, and apparently all I need to do to get some is drop the soap.

      • and the bit about paying back the funds on top of the jail time?

        • Well in that case I probably wouldn't bother. Might try goal just for a weekend then.

Free rent and a bonus Tesla.

I don't understand, what kind of manufacturer just hands over a car without full payment or finance? Did Tesla not pre-empt a problem with this?
