610

First time post here.

I've been eyeing out this soundbar.
Seems to be the cheapest I've seen it.

Not sure if i should be holding off till black Friday.
What is this expected to bottom out as and would it be the cheapest at that time?

Optimal time to buy would have been with the 15% ultimate gift cards. Total after price match was $975 or so.

Without gift cards, I think Samsung EPP had it for $1079 or something close.

Buy price is around the $1000 mark as always.

    • Was that price matched with another retailer then the giftcards?

      • +1

$1173 at appliance online and then 15% gift cards plus some other perk/offers.
        Made it just under $1000.

        I had a look back.
$1099 at Samsung EPP was the lowest listed price we’ve seen.
But people complain about buying from Samsung directly

        • What GC works at appliances online? Or you are referring to after price match

          • @abs898: This was previously. JB hifi matching appliance online.
Then paying with 15% ultimate gift cards.

this is close to the cost price so yeah, it wont get much cheaper than this i reckon for a while

    • +1

Thanks for the heads up, may I ask what is cost price for a q700c, and a s90c 65 inch? Thanks!

  • Wonder if it’s worth upgrading from 950A

    • +1

Just some minor incremental upgrade. Not worth it IMHO

  • +1

It will go cheaper for EPP and EDU store closer to black friday. This will be the promotional price and stores and EPP stores will be a further saving.

Samsung EPP is 1200ish atm. They have started to drop prices

    • EDU 1349 atm

      • EPP is I think 1249

  • This or a proper home cinema system?

    • +1

If you have a Samsung TV, this will do Q Symphony.

If not a Samsung TV, you can go for a home theatre or this. Depends on what HT you get, this will be equally good.

    • +1

I find most soundbars start to sound boxy at med to high levels. The atmos stuff does work but it's hit and miss, sometimes the dialogue floats around for no reason.

Nothing beats separate speakers but it will cost alot more and would need room to set it up.

I would honestly get the Sony HT-A9 over any soundbar

      • +2

HT-A9 vs the previous version of this soundbar according to RTINGS:

The Samsung HW-Q990B and the Sony HT-A9 with Bass Module are two very different setups. They're both very versatile Dolby Atmos soundbars, and the Sony soundbar's unique speaker design means that you can place them anywhere in your setup, resulting in a better soundstage. That said, the Samsung soundbar reproduces more low-bass. It gets louder, and there's less compression at max volume, too. With its discrete center channel, the Samsung soundbar's vocal reproduction is better, too. Both bars will please most listeners, but your personal preferences will decide which is best for you.

      • +1

Literally every one of about 10 back to back comparisons ive read that has actually used both has had the samsung win thay battle for outright sound, narrowly. At half the price, or less with the subs.

      • Well it is $3k Inc sub so I would hope the HT-A9 is better

    • +4

      nothing replaces big tower speakers

      • I replaced big towers worth much with a 990b, you would be suprised how well these do the job.

    • +8

Try and price a home theatre system for the same as this one.

      • +8

If you have a dedicated home theatre room and have plenty of cash and need the best then go for the whole big deal.
For 99% of us this is as good as you will ever need.
        And it’s fantastic!

    • +1

is your budget closer to $1,000 or $10,000?

    • Proper home cinema will be way better but cost at least 3x this for entry level.

  • +1

Still no 4K@120 Hz, so be aware if you are connecting a Xbox Series X or the like

    • Is this even really a big deal?

    • +8

It’s not needed. If you have a TV that supports 4K @ 120Hz then you should be connecting this via the eARC/ARC hdmi port. Keep all of your HDMI devices connected directly to the TV and preserve all of your Hz, HDR, Atmos / DTS goodness and let the TV pass the audio through to the sound system. Thats why sound bars/systems don’t include it in the first place.

Added bonus you can control the volume via your TV remote.

      • I got a newb question, If a tv has 4 hdml and 1 optical port, can I connect 4 devices on tv and pass the audio to the soundbar via optical?

        • +1

Yes but you won't get a symphony that's achieved via the arc port. Also quality won't be that good.

        • Optical doesn't have the bandwidth that Dolby Atmos etc. require, you need HDMI 2.1 connections and cables for it.

  • do Samsung price match Samsung edu i know they denied my price match from another store

    • Nope

      • ofc they don't 😂

        • They don't even price match with other retailers. I am dealing with them right now on something and it's the shits.

If Samsung delivers well and good, anything out of the natural route, you are absolutely f*******ed, don't want to talk to them at all

          • @abs898: yeah didn't relise that the s 801b sounbars deal ended today so i tried to price match appliance online. the sound bar was going for $545 on appliance online, and their response was sorry we don't price match but here's a online offer for 15% off 😂 like i would accept that because it only brought it down to $849

Right now your best bet would be as follows:
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/186057159107?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mk…

    $120 off code - HGTSAVE

    $1168
And then 2.5% ShopBack celebration swap cards.

    Total ~$1138

    • +1

      post the deal i reckon

      • +1

I don’t think it warrants it. I’d only post if it was an ATL price.
But the ATL price would be the $1099 Samsung EPP

        • Give it a few more weeks and it will be atl

I bought this at a similar pricepoint about 6 months ago. The sound is phenomenal for movies and all but for console gaming it's almost unbeatable. Best buy I've made in years and I never liked soundbars before

    • +1

Ive heard for flight sim off the pc, and racing games atmos is incredible.

  • I have a dedicated media room where I am planning to add 85-100inch TV with this soundbar.

How should I position the soundbar main unit, subwoofer and 2X surround speakers in that room? I am guessing these 2x surround speakers will go at back of the room (each side) but what about subwoofer?

Also, what kinda stand do you use with this system? Or simply on floor?

    Thanks

    • Soundbar traditionally goes under the TV. Though you'll want to make sure a TV that big is at the right spot on the wall.

This might put the soundbar too low, not sure what you'll need to do there.

Surround speakers go somewhere near the back left and right corners.

Subwoofer placement is less important as bass frequencies aren't as directional, so generally it should just go in a corner. That said it's also wireless, so you could hook it up to an extension cord and move it around to find the best spot.

Ultimately, if you have a dedicated media room, a proper 5.1.x system with dedicated speakers is going to blow this out of the water (depending on your budget). Go to a proper AV store and listen to some demo systems if you've never heard them in person.

      • Thanks bro.
Could you plz share details as what includes proper 5.1x system? How much total cost I am looking at?

I have about $4.5k for this setup (big TV and sound system) but if the system you are referring is something in this budget or little more then I can think of it. Plz share details.

      username checks out.

  • If anyone is buying this from AO, I got a pop up which said get $20 off your first order over $200. I didn't sign up as I am not buying ATM, but worth a try.

  • I have it's predecessor. Great system imo.

  • Where does that .4 come from? I see one subwoofer. Or is that meant to be 4 upwards firing Atmos speakers?

    • +1

Correct the .4 is the atmos speakers

  • +1

Any recommendations for stands for the rear speakers?

    • +1

Atlantic Satellite 77305018 2 Speaker Stands, Black, 2 Stands Per Pack https://amzn.asia/d/3wdDMON

This is what I bought for my Q990b set up last December from Amazon. Work really well for them, and although the back support is a little short, you can still secure the speaker with it using a little force. I got them for $110, and Amazon sent me 2 pairs for some reason, lol. Ended up giving one pair to a friend of mine.

These are out of stock at the moment though.

Really annoying that these don't have HDMI 2.1
