Normally you can cancel and avoid the renewal charge, the original post needs to specify that a card must remain and can't be cancelled.

        • Would it then just revert to the free account afterwards when the subscription expires?.

          • @hollykryten: No, it's scheduled to charge €47

            • @Jimbuscus: I mean if you disable automatic renewal and when the subscription expires.

              • @hollykryten: You can't disable automatic renewal and you can't remove the card.

                • @Jimbuscus: Are you sure?. Well, that's pathetic if that's true. They can't force you to keep renewing a subscription against your will. One which costs the equivalent of $80 AUD per year.

                  • @hollykryten: You can cancel any time, you just can't cancel now for a future time

  • +3

If you use this service you're going to want more than only 12 months

    Pay? For a password manager?

KeePass is excellent, open source and free.

    • +1

      So is this

      • -3

No this is not free after the first year. +1 for KeePass

  • You also get access to Bridge, which allows you to read mail via a desktop app.
    https://proton.me/mail/bridge#download

    • -1

For clarity Bridge is 100% free, nothing to do with this deal

      • +2

I tried logging in to Bridge with my free account. Says it's exclusively for paid plans and to upgrade my account.

  • +3

In case people don't know, all Proton's apps are free, including Pass.

The description of the bargain is a bit misleading to me as many of those features are included in the free plan:

    Unlimited passwords and notes
    Unlimited devices
    Hide-my-email aliases
    Built in 2FA support

  • Thanks for the link and info I'm impressed with them as a whole company.
So other than support their mission what's the point of paying for this then? Where's the bargain??

    • -2

The bargain is that it is free for a year

    • +2

      Unlimited aliases (10 free)
      Unlimited 2fa (3 autofill free)
Up to 20 vaults (1 free)
      Custom fields
      Priority support

      • Sweet thank you. I don't need any of that extra stuff.

      • +1

Email aliases sounds like a great feature but kind of pointless if you can only set up 10 on a free plan. Also I feel like it’s too late now with my email out there hundreds of times already.

        • +3

DDG has free unlimited aliases, but even 10 is far from pointless if you use groups

When it comes to securing your data every bit counts but you can't be perfect so it's never to late to start

    Bitwarden

  • Anyone use trend micro pw manger? Comes free with the antivirus license

  • @Tacooo thanks for explaining so many things here.

Is there a historically good time to buy the suite of Proton products? Do they have any yearly discounts?

    • They usually have a BF discount, I've only seen it offered to new users and not renewals though

  • Is it worthwhile to pay for proton/bitwarden/1password etc than just use Google Passwords which integrates into my browser and android phone and is free (esp since I have no ads on Google with G Suite legacy)?

    • +8

      Bitwarden is free.

      Stop giving google everything.

    • +1

I'd never save my passwords on a browser. I use Bitwarden which is free and offers all features that i need

Proton Pass is also free and maintained by a company with a very strong security track record, not one of the biggest data mining companies on the planet

  • I don’t know if I’m a tech retard but I tried the free version of proton and couldn’t get it to work on my Mac… but it works fine on my iPad/phone. Anybody know a fix? 😫

    • Only browser based or proton app for non premium

  • Thoughts on using password managers for banking…

    • Definitely. Set a long, strong password and let the password manager do the work!

Yeah i look at what you're going to get slugged after the free 12 month trial is over. Proton Pass Plus. And that's currently €47.88 per year (about $80 AUD). And that's being slugged that price every single year after year. I'll give this one a miss.

You can get far better deals on Password Managers (Lifetime subscription) through Stacksocial. One payment and nothing more to pay ever. None of this 12 months free then be slugged an arm and a leg year after year.

    For example:

    https://www.stacksocial.com/sales/sticky-password-premium-li…

    • Why bother with those other "lifetime" deals when Bitwarden is free?

      • Does Bitwarden have a cloud save feature?.

        • Correct, the account is stored in the cloud with zero knowledge encryption.

This allows you to sync passwords across devices, apps, add-ins.

          • @Apostle0748: I see. Still the free version lacks the Authenticator feature which helps stop people hijacking the account. And the Emergency access feature. That's one thing the free Password Manager doesn't have.

I never use a Password Manager which doesn't have an Authenticator and Emergency access feature. Password Boss Premium which i use has both of those features. Got the lifetime access as a good price a while back. I have my secondary email address linked to gain emergency access back to the account even if the lose access from the primary login account.

So good luck if your account gets hijacked on your free Bitwarden account.

            • @hollykryten: I think you misunderstood what the pricing tiers offer.

2FA is available on the free tier, you don’t need to pay for it. The paid for tier allows you to add 2FA for your accounts within Bitwarden.

Is Password Boss security audited by third parties? I wouldn’t trust a service that doesn’t do this. Especially one that isn’t open source. Look at what happened to LastPass. All the info coming out now shows how weak their code/service was.

Plus a lifetime purchase isn’t sustainable, especially if there is servers and development teams to maintain. I understand Bitwarden has a highly used free tier, but there are also quite a few on the paid for plans given it’s quite cheap ($10/year) and people want to support the service.

  • Thanks, worked! Revolut disposable card wouldn't work. I Don't use Revo much any way so just used the normal multi-use card. You can't cancel the subscription without losing the benefits it seems. Includes VPN it seems :)

    • You can create, freeze and destroy a multi-use card effectively making it a disposable. Revoult is great for that.

    • Proton VPN is free, you don't get the VPNPlus with this, so congested free servers and currently only choice of 3 countries

      • -1

Yeah lol, realised afterwards. Used ProtonVPN free on and off over the years. Recently on Google One VPN but haven't renewed my plan yet. I found a 75% discount on Google One on select accounts here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/807184

        • +3

ProtonVPN and Google One VPN would be on very different ends of the privacy spectrum I would imagine.

@Pharos - I'm trying to sign up using the provided link but at payment page its trying to collect 47.88 EUR. Even the OTP sent to my credit card says enter the code to authorize payment of 47.88 EUR. Maybe its expired?

    • +1

Yes, that's correct. It has expired. I've updated the post. Thank you for informing me.
