(NSW) Can We Take an Infant (>6 Months and < 1 Yr) in The Backseat of a Taxi? E.g, 13cabs or Siver Taxi

I hear in Vic, it is legal as long as the baby is sitting on an adult's lap in the backseat. Is that rule true for NSW as well? Also, in Victoria it is illegal in Uber or Ola or any such providers but is legal only with taxi services like 13Cabs or Siver taxi.

I am keen to know the rules in NSW for carrying babies in car. Or do we need to have an infant seat fitted before the journey?

Cheers,
Dr-SL

(NSW) Can We Take an Infant (>6 Months and < 1 Yr) in The Backseat of a Taxi?

I pasted that to google for you.

New South Wales: Transport for NSW's road rules state that, while travelling in a taxi: children up to the age of 6 months must use a rear-facing child car seat. children aged between 6 and 12 months must use either a rear‑facing child car seat or a forward-facing child car seat with an inbuilt harness.

Thank you. I saw that here but wasn't quite sure if it was a legit govt source. https://www.pointtopoint.nsw.gov.au/learning-centre/fact-she…

you think nsw.gov.au isnt a legit source?

        • maybe the alias "pointtopoint" lol

        • it's not nsw.g0v.au

I am not technical with these but just cautious with websites online with funny names like pointtopoint.

@Dr-StrangeLove: That's okay and understandable! For future reference, you should know that unless there's a serious breach, .gov.au websites are legit. It's not possible for non-government entities to register them. However, that doesn't mean all the information on them is always correct and up to date. In this case, I believe the information is correct.

        Frequently asked questions

What happens if there is no approved child restraint?
        Taxis

Don't know if it is legal or not, but it sounds like a bad idea.

Thought I was having deja-vu after reading a similar post … but then realised you had asked the something very similar two years ago. Just happened to come up when I was figuring out the deja-vu bit.

Anyways, if there is ever any doubt, .gov.au websites are all legit Australian government sources.

    • Wow, I might be getting old! Forgot that I had already asked that. Thanks for letting me know.

Alls well. Based off the question, I can only assume baby brain is well and truly kicking in~! Can relate.

Hang tight cos the same question will be asked again in 2 year's time

  • You're thinking of planes.

  • Assuming you're trying to get to-and-from the airport, you can prebook "family taxis" for that sort of thing. It was about $80 each way i think? So we figured it wasn't much more than the train and saved a bit of time

We don't do it anymore now that daughter is a bit older and can walk by herself, we swapped back to the train

are you talking about kidnapping someones child and then using a taxi as a get away car?

no, you know you can't that as it is very wrong.

a >12 months can travel in the back seat of the taxi. under 12 months a child restraint is required in a taxi.
Uber does not have the same exemption.

    • haha no, I am not planning on kidnapping anyone.

Thanks for clarifying. I think I got the answer!

  • I have to say …why would you?

    • What would you do if you have a baby and need to go somewhere but don't have a car or babyseat?

      • Buy a baby seat?

          Buy a baby seat?

          And a car.

      • What would you do if you have a baby and need to go somewhere but don't have a car or babyseat?

I certainly WOULDN'T take my baby or any unrestrained child in a car. Would you?

  • The rule is very inconsistent and harsh to people who do no own a car. What about buses? And does the same rule applies to public bus vs hired private bus?

  • If it's a one off, e.g. a trip to the airport, ladies running errands can be pre-booked with car seats.
