  • lol at the 1 star review for not including the cheesy cardboard gift box

    • I too would be outraged without a cardboard gift box, it's all about the presentation! (jks) :P

Good to sneak into Market square for a classy drink accompanied with the national award winning gelato from Milano and Satay Skewers.

    • +1

      Wat?

      • Dan's is over the road, so just pop over grab the bottle then enjoy Milani and Skewers.

    • My boxed wine wins awards. According to the back of the box.

      • +2

        Sour grapes 🍇 perhaps?

  • Most places are OOS.

    • Brisbane with lots of stock lucky us!

      • I see more stocks for 2020 vintage. Dan started clearing 2019 vintage a couple days ago, now move to 2020 and 2021 vintages. Seems they try to clear all BIN 407.

        • Looks like 2021 rates higher…

          • +1

@petec_7: Doesn't matter. 407 is very consistent from year to year, so you probably won't be able to tell the difference.

        • Dan started clearing 2019 vintage

          I hope he gets help…

  • Got 2. Thanks!

  • I seem to have missed out, great deal.

    • Change your store. Plenty available. Also change the years. 2020 has a decent amount. 2021 is plentiful

      • I did try. im in SA. All the stores within 15km were sold out :(

  • nice

Bear in mind that like most Penfolds wines, 407 is made in MASSIVE quantities. Like most Penfolds wines (including Grange), they are also not single vineyard, so Penfolds can pick and choose where they source their grapes from various regions in order to maintain consistency. For Penfolds, consistency is king.

That is why I find Penfolds wines so amazingly boring. It's all the bloody same. And it's ~30% overpriced at their typical price. I personally prefer wines from smaller wineries- Good years can be better than Penfolds wines but poor years will also still taste different….but importantly they won't be priced at Penfolds prices.

I personally bought half a dozen. Mainly to stick in the wine fridge and forget about them for 15years and then share them with family. If you don't drink wine, these would be great for presents.

This is a deal at the discounted price for sure.

  • Thanks OP! I had to drive around and was able to pick up 3 bottles. Wasn't able to order online and use the discount code but still a very good price.

I used to buy a lot of 407 and 389, but I don't find the price justified anymore. i.e. the quality is fine but it is just too expensive for what it is, so many drops as good or better at cheaper prices.

No stores with 407 in the Canberra bubble :(

  • No stock in Sydney :(

    • There is plenty. Change to 2020 or 2021 vintage

      • i honestly can't find any stocks. postcode 2000 and any store within 50km doesn't have stock.
which store are you lookin at?

        • It was plentiful when i last looked at it in the Hills district, but now says sold out. I still see stock around Newcastle

  • None available anywhere lol

  • Some stock in SA, but like an hour outside of Adelaide for both 2020 and 2021.

    No thank you lol

    • +2

Why the hell is someone from SA buying Penfolds?

There's so much better priced wines there

WTF, did they send them to China again? OOS for Australian wine….

  • Ok, a bunch of you are saying there’s better out there and cheaper.

Please recommend something as an alternative to this penfolds ‘deal’.

    Thanks in advance :)

      For $16

Ive never tried Bin 407, so absolutely no clue how it compares :)

      • Its not even the same grape…

          meh its still wine

    • Really depends on what style you like and your own tastebuds.

Cab Sav likes a bit of cooler weather as opposed to the traditional Aussie shiraz. Every region will have its own style and every winery has a style. Every wine producing state also insists that their wines are the best (victorians seem to be the snobbiest).

Id suggest going to a few wineries and buying their wines. Itll probably end up being cheaper than Penfolds, and you will have the emotional connection because you have been there. I personally find the smaller, family run wineries tend to be better value than the wineries run by the corporate giants.

But to clarify, at this deal price, 407 is a good buy. At its normal price, its not.

      • Try Wynns Black Label( ~$35). Dans often has some nice cellar releases in most stores.
      • Yeringberg Cabernets or Mount Mary Quintet for something stunning at a similar price point to 407.
      • Ask your local wine expert (merchant in Dans) for a mid range Margaret River cab ($50-$60) ie Vasse Felix, Cape Mentelle. Skip the $20 stuff
      • You can get some decent cru bourgeois Bordeaux Left Banks from $30-60 such as Chateau Haut Madrac (at Dans) or Chateau Pontoise Carrabus (online)

When chatting with your wine expert, be sure to ask about the style. Some Cab is made for aging and can be quite tannic. Some is ready for drinking.

For what it’s worth, I enjoy 407 and prefer it to 389.

    • I read a few years back that 407 is only priced like it is for the chinese market. It used to sell for $20 a bottle. I stopped drinking it when it passed $40 a bottle. It is priced like a 389 but doesn't get the quality of grapes of a 389 and whether true or not it is priced as it is purely because chinese drinkers expected similar pricing to a 389 because of the numbers.

  • I can’t find any

  • thanks got it. nice deal

  • Penfolds have been overinflating their prices for years. 389s were a solid mid range and now over $100, probably to capitalise during the heydays of the Chinese market

    • Its crazy how much 389 has become. But it sells damn well in Asia

  • You guys made work hard as heck buying our entire stock of 407 over at sunnybank, but at least it was interesting

    • +1

Pickup shelf must be filled with 407 orders now :P

    • When are you getting more stock of 407?
