Short Transiting Time Bali to Sydney via Gold Coast

I'm looking at flights from Sydney to Bali in April.

I found flights with Virgin Australia, one stop over each way.

  • Sydney to Bali via Melbourne with layover time of 1hr 55mins.
  • Bali to Sydney Via Gold Coast with layover of 1hr 15mins.

I'm not so worried about going there but on the way back there is only 1hr or so, is that too tight?

Can I get from Gold Coast international to domestic and clear customs with 1hr? I would only have carry on so I won't need to wait for luggage. What happens if I can't make it? Would the airline put my family onto a later flight?

  • Idk about you but I am wayyyy to anxious to depend on a 1hr window

If you are booking it all on one ticket through Virgin, then they will have determined the transit time is fine and if you dont make the connection they will have to put you on a later flight. Dont know how much time later that will be but at least you will get there at no cost. However if you are buying separate tickets eg Bali - Gold Coast on Virgin and then to Sydney on Jetstar, the risk is all yours.

Because OOL is so small it doesnt take much time to transfer between the international and the domestic areas, but you obviously need to go through immigration and customs and that could take who knows how long. Plus a delayed flight is always a possibility.

If you ask Virgin to keep you on the earlier flight and you make it, then all good; if you miss it you are probably on the next flight. If you ask them to put you on the later flight, then you wont have the chance to go on the earlier flight but you might get a bit less stressed.

All connecting flights booked with Virgin Australia adhere to a minimum connection time, and we only offer connecting flights with a connection time that is equal to or longer than this. Depending on the size of the airport and whether you’re connecting between domestic or international flights, the minimum connection time will vary. We have a full-time team of staff monitoring connecting journeys. If your flights are booked on a single reservation, we’ll be able to see that you’re connecting, and in the event of a delay we’ll be working behind the scenes to get you on your way as quickly as possible. Sometimes we’re able to hold a flight so connecting guests can make a tight connection, while other times we’ll try and park aircraft next to each other to allow for a quick transfer. Despite our best efforts, in some circumstances guests won’t make their connection—and in these situations, when booked in a single reservation, you can rest assured that we’re taking care of things for you. https://www.virginaustralia.com/au/en/travel-info/specific-t…

    • Thank you so much DTC. It's very well answered.

  • It's a tiny airport. If everything is on time you'll be fine, it only takes 7 minutes to walk the whole length of the airport

    • If everything is on time you'll be fine

      true…

      • I want to delete that part (If everything is on time you'll be fine) but it won't let me .. it's a tiny airport , maybe 150 metres long so if everything is NOT on time, you can still run and make it

        • but it won't let me

          Chill…..😎

          • @jv: I think there's a time limit to edit your posts. I'm smoking medicinal cannabis now so it's all good. I told my GP I have insomnia and he gave me a script to buy govt sanctioned weed 🤩

  • International and domestic are in the one terminal at Gold Coast, and I've found customs very relaxed there in the past. I don't think you'll have a problem in making your connection. Once you clear customs, it's going to be a 2 minute walk to your gate, the airport isn't big. If you don't make it for any reason, Virgin should put you on the next available flight

  • . It that too tight?

its virgin…. the flights will be cancelled, delayed, running late, over subscribed, cancelled, late….
    your call.
