Philips Hue Outdoor Motion Sensor V2 - Alternates

Hi,

I do not have the Philips Hue family and not interested in getting one. However, I liked the Philips Hue Outdoor Motion Sensor's the concept of going wireless

https://www.philips-hue.com/en-au/p/hue-outdoor-motion-senso…

Are there similar ones, that are
1. Outdoor usable
2. Wifi compatible and Smart (Zigbee is fine too)

It is a Double Storey home, cant do a wired one

Thank you

What do you intend to use it with? What smarthome platform are you using?

Eve make a motion sensor that is outdoor rated, but it is thread, not wifi. You won’t find many wireless wifi motion sensors, if any. All the ones I’ve seen are bluetooth, zigbee or thread.

    • I have the Zigbee and intend to use it to do the outdoor wall lights. The outdoor lights will be connected to smart plugs switch

Per the question from @joolz50, are you going with Apple HomeKit, Home Assistant, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, something else?

Perhaps it is going to be easier to buy a light bulb that comes with motion sensor like this one?

        • i dont have any batons where i can screw this on. all are downlights

          • @dragonfly090: Your build feels newish? The downlights are likely GU10 LED which you could replace with Philips Hue GU10. A sensor can then trigger lighting automations to suit your requirements.

You can use the Hue one on Home Assistant with a Zigbee dongle. I was also using the Ikea one, but not sure if they're available. Not waterproof but was fine under my porch.

Depending on your smart home system, if you're using any hub/controller that supports ZigBee there is a pretty good chance that the Philips sensor may actually work with it.

I've had success in the past pairing a sensor to my Home Assistant instance directly, it's not locked to the Philips hue ecosystem requiring hue bridge etc.

Just FYI though, I do find them extremely reliable and battery life is amazing

If it's just for your garden, you could use a camera to do the motion detection for you. Not as fast as PIR, but still works very well. I have mine set up through Frigate and it's quite reliable.

If it's for your front door, an indoor motion sensor will work totally fine because it won't get wet outside due to the eaves. I've been using a bog standard IKEA motion sensor on my front door for 5 or so years and had no issues (aside from being too sensitive, so I 3D printed a shroud for it).

    • its for the outdoor pillar lights.
We mucked up when we were building and did not get the sensor/wiring done.

      Our lights currently are
      1. We have one sensor - Sensor controlled by 1 on/off switch
      2. 3 pillar lights - controlled by 1 on/off switch
      3. 4 porch downlight lights - controlled by 1 on/off switch, with these I intend to get the Meross Switch

I have a 3 pack eero devices that have zigbee built-in.

Sparky looked at the setup and he says there is lot of work and he suggests not to do it.

What I need is a sensor to light up the pillar lights and porch lights

So the first problem you'll have is bulbs. If you didn't wire in inline smart switches for the lights, your easiest option will be bulbs. The problem with that route is that they're a) often lower lumen (which is bad for outside) and b) larger in size due to the components required (so they may not fit in your existing pillar mounts). Downlights for the porch won't be a problem because there's smart lights of all types of downlight mounts.

So for the porch, a normal internal PIR sensor will work totally fine. Depending on the layout of your pillar lights (MS Paint sketch time bud!), you may need something specialised for outdoors (or be prepared to replace it frequently).

@dragonfly090: With that layout I would recommend two sensors. One in front of the door to catch people both entering and leaving, and another looking either down towards the garage or out towards what I assume would be the front. The door one can trigger the down lights, and the other one can trigger both sets of lights.

As all your pillars are on one string, and all your downlights ar on another string, the easiest way to do this would be with an inline no-neutral smart switch either Wi-Fi, ZigBee, or Matter (if there's any commercially available in AU with certification). Then you won't need smart bulbs at all and can handle everything with the inline smart switches. These would need to be installed by an electrician, but are likely your best bet.

            • @trankillity: thank you, please help me understand this is simple language "the easiest way to do this would be with an inline no-neutral smart switch either Wi-Fi, ZigBee, or Matter. Sorry

              • @dragonfly090: You can get devices that go in your wall which are basically just remote control switches. They use communictaion protocols like WiFi, ZigBee or Matter.

I have one of the Philips outdoor sensors and it's great. My suggestion would be to:
        1. Use either the Meross or possibly one of the multitude of Shelly devices (https://www.smarthome.com.au/an-introduction-to-shelly-wi-fi…) - to install any of those of course you will need to have a licensed electrician do the work. If you're planning to do one anyhow, do that for both the pillar and porch lights. Maybe even look around the house and consider doing a few others whilst that's happening. Heck, could even look at putting in the Shelly Pro Relays (https://www.smarthome.com.au/product/shelly-pro-1-relay-swit…) in your fuse box and turn all the lights on/off in one circuit.
        2. Get the Philips sensor - it costs a bit, but it's reliable and the battery lasts ages. Eero claim it should work (https://support.eero.com/hc/en-us/articles/207927333-eero-de…). You could get a sensor that is not rated for outdoors (eg https://www.smarthome.com.au/product/shelly-wi-fi-motion-sen…) and put it in a sheltered place (even with the Philips that's a good idea), but it will not last as long. Your choice.

You should then be able to let the existing sensor security light do its thing, and with the Philips sensor setup rules to turn on/off the other lights as required. Worse case if you have issues with the Eero support of zigbee, then you could look at alternatives such as home assistant and a zigbee dongle.

Be aware that there are other things to keep in mind, such as signal strength - which may or may not be an issue for you, depending on the distance between your devices, what is between them, signal interference etc.

        • "thank you, will look at this

You could use Philips Hue just for the outdoor light you need the sensor on. The bridge doesn't cost much and I haven't checked in a while but aren't they moving to Matter, do they even need the bridge anymore?
