Relocation of nbn FTTP NTD Advice + (Rec'd Installers Newcastle Area)

Hi all, We had our NBN FTTP installed last year, and the box was installed outside the front room of a bedroom.

When the internal cabler came, he said he could not relocate it to the centre of the house, and was only paid to install it on the inside of the house, so it ended up on the inside of the front bedroom wall.

There have been a few issues with the router PSU or NBN PSU becoming unplugged, not too mention speed drops despite having a Deco Mesh system setup (Signal drops due to doors/walls).

I now work from home, and want to move the NBN box closer to the centre of the house. I have previously done Cat5 cabling, but one of the issues is that the roof space is small, and has insulation, Aircon ducting etc.

Not too mention, I have a broken wrist atm, so I am limited physically. I do know one company but they mainly do corporate work.

I was going to post on Airtasker, but they are not always reliable, and some people can be dodgy.

The other option I thought about was instead of going through the walls and ceiling, re-routing a cable (via Conduit) from the external box around the house, about 12 to 15 metres, and installing the box in the Dining room, which is more central.

Thank you for any advice in advance.

NBN's box goes on the side wall. They don't put it in the middle of the house.
There are several types of NBN. What sort do you have? FTTN, FTTP, FTTC, HFC?
Once the NBN is connected to the inside, you can put whatever you want for your own WiFi throughout your house, or run ethernet cables to connect to TVs or computers if you want it faster and more reliable. Almost any electrician can run Cat 6 ethernet cables. Costs a few hundred per outlet - same as if you wanted a new electrical outlet installed somewhere.
Doing your own fixed wiring cabling without a license is illegal.

    • Sorry FTTP.

We want to move it out of the bedroom, to solve any arguments. ;)
I know not all electricians have these qualifications.

OK, so FTTP is like this https://www.nbnco.com.au/learn/network-technology/fibre-to-t… That also gives location guides. But a bedroom is not great with the flashing lights. Perhaps blutack is needed…

There is the ethernet cable out of the NTD that needs to go to your router/wifi/mesh device. You could get an ethernet outlet put near that box and then have it connect where ever the router is best to go.

Yes, not all sparkies are qualified, but lots are. They don't seem to be hard to find.

        • The nbn fibre NTD can relocated to the middle by a cabler.

      • Just do what everyone else says: bite the bullet and just hire someone to run CAT6 cabling through your allegedly inaccessible roof space. The NTD location will then be immaterial, because you can connect it to a centralised router, which can then feed to any room or AP you want.

    • Doing your own fixed wiring cabling without a license is illegal.
Shh! I helped wire up a store many years ago, so we could open on time. Some of my outlets are still in use. ;)

Find a cabler. Get a minimum of 3 quotes.

  • CAT5E cabling is okay to DIY, but legally you need a certified (rip off) cabler to relocate anything that connect to NBN….. So I would look at running your own CAT5E cable to move the router to where you need it. Look up CAT5E puncher and CAT5E termination and etc and try some of the 100M cable you will end up buying on a short run of say 1M to get it right.
When you run a length of cable add 1M at each end and poke it back into the cavity.

Run more then one cable even if you do not terminate it so you can use it for something else if a few year or use it pull speaker or RGxx cable (sorry been a while on RG cables).

The worst you can do is drill a hole in the wrong pace so be very very careful and quadruple check when drilling a hole that can be seen.

The other thing is to draw up a diagram of the house and where you think the cables will go from and too. Then check it physically by getting under the house and then get in the roof cavity and look down between the walls to see if they are hollow or not.I made the mistake of thinking a wall was one brick wide in one place and it was an old outside wall that was now an inside wall and I spent hours trying to figure out the problem until I got into the roof and the light went on. Dough….

Roof cavity is very tight. Easier to take the roof off.

        "Roof cavity is very tight"
        No children then?
        .

  • Why can't you just put a little hall table over the box in the room and just get a cable from the NBN box to the router in the middle of the house? You should never need to touch the NBN box, especially if you have FTTP.

    • 17 yo female moving into the room, and wants it gone (if possible). No point in her having the best signal for watching makeup videos on yt and Taylor Swift.

      • You renting the room to a stranger, or a relative? Anyway you could put a cabinet around it if you don't want her bumping into it. And pay someone to run a cable from it to wherever you want your router. You should only need to touch the NBN box if changing ISPs really.

  • Try https://www.facebook.com/StevesNewcaslteHandymanServices/, he has got his licenses. We got a quote from him for other work (not used him yet), but he gets decent reviews.

    • Thank you. Our eleco has put us on to someone, but waiting on a response.

  • Update

I have spoken to a few Data cablers/Electricians, and they say that it should be referred back to the NBN, as they don't want to touch the equipment.
Obviously running the cable, and having the Router central is a solution, but we want to have access to the NBN box.
