Do you not get a free shipping offer from Amazon.com to AUS like NZ does for those SKU's? $89.99 with $10 off coupon clicked + 10% GST and free shipping is ~$99USD = ~$156AUD.

If you don't need as much storage space. You can get the SK Hynix 1TB Portable SSD for $92.73 delivered. The same rated speed of up to 1050 MB/s.

This one uses a QLC SSD (read Tom's hardware's review if you want more information). If you go DIY route, it will cost you about $135-$140 (used to be $125-$130, but no special on cheap NVMe QLC 2TB SSDs at the moment). Obviously, with X8, you get a slightly better SSD (this QLC SSD does have DRAM), a better enclosure (larger so better thermal) and decent cables.

lmao qlc crap and tech jesus had the audacity to promote this garbage

    • A lot of SD cards, USB flash drives are QLC based. In general use, QLC SSDs are still much faster than portable HDDs. When you are on the go, will you be constantly writing 100GB of data to an external SSD? Do bear in mind that when SLC cache is in use, you won't be able to tell the difference, especially given it is USB 3.2 gen 2.

If QLC SSDs prices can go down further, they are a far better option than HDDs for storing downloaded files (especially compressed zip files). Fast reads are still useful. Also, do bear in mind a lot of more cost effective portable SSDs, despite being TLC based, used inferior grade TLC. Quite a lot of them use a tiny SLC cache so you may not actually be better off.

When this SSD is completely empty, it can write approximately 100GB at 1000MB/s, my cheapest TLC external SSD can only write about 16GB at 1000MB/s then it drops to TLC write speed. So, is that TLC external SSD really faster than this QLC all the time?

    qlc, bad.

    • That is a fake 2TB SSD. It's not going to be legit for that price. It probably contains inside of the enclosure a hacked micro sd card with PCB to fool the operating system into thinking it's a 2TB SSD. So don't waste your money on that fake SSD.
