Recommend Me a Wrist Brace from Chemist Warehouse as a New Mum

Started getting the typical mum's thumb now that baby is 8 weeks old.

Chemist Warehouse has an abundance of wrist splint braces to choose from so I feel overwhelmed.

Would appreciate if you can help me out and recommend which is the appropriate one to get from chemist warehouse.

    typical mum's thumb

I had to Google that. Interesting.

    • Sounds like they might by lifting their infant improperly…😲

    • Weird this is a thing

Definitely good to get ahead of it, our little one is 8 months old now, and my wife got the "mum's thumb" early on and has gotten worse as the bebe has gotten heavier. I can't recommend one over another as I'm no Physio, but well worth consulting a professional as the pain and difficulty it can cause long term takes its toll.

  • I have had wrist problems for years and the only one that I actually like is the Futuro For Her. It’s a blue one that you can remove the splint and is super comfy and adjustable. Can’t get it from chemist warehouse but I’ve tried all of theirs and find them tight in the wrong places or the material scratchy.

  • Have you seen a physio? Mine said to ensure it has a strong/metal splint down the length of the thumb to help isolate it. The CW ones I looked at don't have anything on the thumb, so I personally wouldn't get any from CW as they are more for the wrist only rather than the thumb and wrist.

    Have you tried Amazon/ebay?

I got the below one from Amazon as the ones in the b&m stores I went to all didn't seem very good for the price ($30+) eg had plastic splints instead of metal or splints in the wrong place or nothing around the thumb at all.

I also like that it isn't full palm, I feel like those would get much more dirty, hot and sweaty vs my version. I've had mine for almost a month and only just washed it yesterday because it was getting a bit smelly.

Unfortunately it doesn't look in stock at the moment.

This one looks similar to my one, there are ones like it online. Eg https://amzn.asia/d/ffObgJ5

Good luck, it's a bloody annoying injury.

    Google de Quervain's Syndrome.

Here's the wiki page for it:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Quervain_syndrome

I had it in my right wrist (ironically from folding brochues on Occupational Overuse Syndrome) and had surgery which showed I had three tendons and two tendon sheaths and did the usual things with using my left wrist over my right. The hand surgeon mentioned at the time that it is commonly seen in new mums from picking the baby up under the arms and sometimes nappy changing.

Discovered I had it in my left wrist when I was pregnant with our first child, so had surgery at about 12 weeks pregnant as I didn't want it post delivery.

A steriod injection might help initially - I also saw a specialist physio from the Brisbane Hand and Upper Limb Clinic (I kid you not, I had no idea these things were so specialised!) who was able to give me specific exercises and a splint made to fit me.

    Best of luck!

How much was surgery if you don't mind me asking? And how long for recovery?

      TIA

        I honestly can't remember - it was over 20 years ago…

But it was a short day surgery procedure. Can be done under local or twilight, too.

Looks like you are in Sydney - this is the group I went through in Brisbane. I saw Dr Greg Couzens and he was amazing. He did do a steroid injection, but also said he didn't like to do too many of them as they contain base metals and when he operates he finds 'globs' of them still in the wrist.

  • I recently had carpal tunnel after having a baby and used the imak gloves. Not available at chemist warehouse but highly recommend.
