[VIC] Men’s Haircuts, Beard / Moustache Grooming or Face / Head Shave for $5 Each Mon-Thu @ Box Hill Institute Student Barber

930

Looks like the Box Hill Institute's student run barbershop has re-opened. Men’s Haircuts, Beard / Moustache Grooming or Face / Head Shave can be obtained for $5 each. It may take a bit longer in the chair but to help give students valuable experience honing their skills, it’s likely worth the savings.

The barbershop is open Monday-Thursday during school term from 9am-3pm with walk-ins only.

The Atrium, Building B4, Ground Floor,
465 Elgar Road, Box Hill

Now this is a deal I can get behind!!

  • How good/bad are they. Will I be able to attend office after their cut?

    • +8

if you are that particular you should pay 50 dollars from another shop

      • +7

But I am also a cheap ass.

I don't think expecting a haircut quality of a standard acceptable to walk into an office is "being particular".

I cut my own hair, with zero training, and can achieve that with ease. Obviously expecting them to perfect a complicated cut is unreasonable, but I'd be concerned at their prospects if they couldn't manage a simple style without majorly messing it up.

        • Exactly! A fade isn’t that complicated.
I cut my own hair too. And WFH for couple of days if I mess up 😂.
Then blend one more time and good as new.
This one is a bad deal for me. I used to save $25 by cutting my own hair, but now it seems I will only be saving $5.

      • $50 🤦 barber close to my place half that

    • +3

Don't cut it too short at the beginning. If it's not done well, you can still make adjustments.

In NSW, you can also get this done at tafe in Ultimo.
Note, make sure u have like an hour because that's how long they take there. They cut, someone looks at the cut and gives suggestion, and repeat until the reviewer approves.

  • Face / Head Shave

    That's a brave choice for $5

  • +3

There any unis in Vic western suburbs that do the same?

    • Angel institute - st. Albans

      • Same price?

    • -2

      You're welcome…

      • BS, I called them. They don't do $5 cuts.

  • +1

Is this a bargain or is this the price you would expect for someone that isn't a professional hair dresser?

    • +3

I paid $40 two years ago for the same service in a very well known barbershop.
      The guy was basically learning.
He was good but definitely not $40 good.

For those people asking how good the cut is - I get my hair cut regularly at my local TAFE for $10. They are always 3rd or 4th year apprentices who work in salons/barber shops and cut hair (both long and short) regularly.

I've also had a cut throat shave done at TAFE as well and it was fine.

It takes a bit longer than going to a salon/barber because they have forms to fill out and the teacher critiques it at the end. Likely ends up being a better cut than if you were to walk into an actual shop because of this.

    Anything for $5 in sydney.

I go to 888 in hurstville, get them to do the sides @ 2 and front @ 5. Then i fix it at home and maintain it every 10 days till next cut in 3 to 4 months.

The maintaining helps, just takes time to be comfortable trimming your own hair

i remember next to 888 there used to be a netcafe, so i'd get a fresh cut then spend an hour playing counterstrike there haha

    • Is your first line a question? Someone above mentioned a TAFE in Ultimo provides this kind of service.

    • The aunties at 888 are really aggressive and talks super loudly. For the price, i would gladly wear some earplugs and get my hair cut in 5 mins.

Decent option for anyone nearby. I get mine done at a Chinese one in Hurstville for $9 or $10 (depending on the day). Was as low as $6 a couple of years ago. Can sometimes be a short wait, but the actual cut (short back and sides) takes 5 minutes.

Edit: post above beat me by 11 seconds, that's the same one.

    • Yep. A few are really good there.

No way im paying $40 for a haircut.
I invested in a decent trimmer and watched a few video, then trial and error till i was happy.

Still need the sides done by someone else every few months as it gets harder to blend

I get mine done at kings domain in collingwood by a student barber, costs a 10'r. I always use a student that's close to finishing their course.

ooh, great post. any one happens to have a list of other similar services in other parts of VIC?

I found one called Mysa, which run by Chisholm Institute that are based across Frankston, Berwick, Dandenong and Rosebud.

    • Cheaper?

    • -1

Woooo I was trying to find the Chisholm Dandenong one the other day.. couldn’t locate so was gonna call but didn’t do it

      So appreciate the post

Especially the fact they offer Beaty services… $25 for 1 hour massage… hello!

      😎

  • I thought this is a recruitment agency ad.

    Anything similar in QLD?

    • 🤣🤣🤣

  • I got to CDU in Palmerston, NT for $10 hair cuts. A cut and colour for under $50. They also have a beauty area that you can get cheap massages, waxing and pedicures.

During lockdowns here in Melbourne Mrs B cut my hair, when I emerged from the darkness, I found that the guy who had cut my hair for 10 years had closed his shop. So I went without for a bit and then happened to pass BHI one day, and found the barber shop.
Excellent service. When I go it is in the morning so I can't speak to their hours, but the result is great. Very good attention to detail and yes, it does take a bit longer, but I am rarely in a rush anyway.
Even my son (25), who was paying over $50 for a cut, now goes for a cut and a beard trim.
It gets a bit breezy in the shop but the result is well worth it.

Just went today. Cuts are fine.

  • My only concern is finding free and accessible parking around the area

    • There is free 2 hour parking zones in the surrounding streets, but don't know about the availability. The only on-campus car park available to the public charges $3.50 per hour with a $11 daily max.

  • i am worried thery will do edgy stuff to be artsy…

I went in today hoping for a fresh cut but saw there's some construction work happening and was told it will be closed until the new year.

I wasn't given a date of when it will be open
