Restumping old Weatherboard

Hi,

I am looking at getting my 1960 weather board home restumped. Spoken to a few restumping companies and found mostly similar quotes. Would like to know if anyone has used GTS Reblocking in Melbourne. They have suggested that they use there own stumps which are lighter and 85 mm x 85 mm compared to standard 100 x 100 mm. They have a separate company that manufactures and sells these. And have provided me a compliance certificate for there stumps and say these are better than regular 100 mm ones.

Looking to see if any one used these guys and how you found there quality of work?

Thanks

Get a quote for adjustable stumps to compare

You may want to do a deeper dive into concrete vs steel

    • Steel would be more expensive. So that would blow the costs.

      • Steel is widely regarded as superior, but you get what you pay for.

  • How big is the house, is underfloor access good and what was an approx cost.
We need to get our house done also

    • It's a 3 bedder weatherboard only 110 sqm. Most quotes I have got are around 14-16k. Note that since last year everyone is quoting couple of thousand more.

I would be reluctant to compromise on materials to save money.
As most of the cost is going to be labor.

As "lighter and 85 mm x 85 mm" probably means they are cheaper to purchase and easier to install.
Which probably means they won't hold up as well.

And be weary of terms like "these are better".
Better (easier) to install maybe? Cheaper to buy maybe? Easier to carry around and work with maybe?
But none of that means they are a better product overall, will last longer, or result in a better overall finish.

And compliance certificate just means it meets minimum standards.
Doesn't mean it's good and also doesn't mean it's covered under warranty (unless specified).

If you are going to stay in house for 20+ years, get it done properly.
If you are going to sell it eventually, it probably doesn't matter that much.

    • The restumper is providing 10 year warranty in the contract. And they will need to pass the final inspection as well.

This is what the restumper came back with - "We have been using 85mm stumps for 20 years. They are made out of stronger concrete, have a much stronger fixing system and also have galvanised reo through them. Our permit will have 85mm concrete stumps noted."

  • What's the cost of the quote out of interest?

I have post-war weatherboard house in Melbourne.
Had been restumped (quite badly) on new concrete stumps about 15 years ago.
    The house was a mess.

Got it re-leveled 'jacked-and-packed' for about $4k with a few extra new stumps in critical areas.
End result was very good, you wouldn't notice it at all. Almost perfectly level (to the naked eye).

    • This is fresh restumping and not jacking and packing. The quote is ~15500 (roughly 70 stumps).

Others have given me 16k. Can I ask who did you use?

  • DIY if you want to get fit.

I used Reblocking and Underpinning Solutions Pty Ltd in Glenroy. I was very happy with them. Having been in the house for a while now, it's held up well.

Try get them to do a quote?
Ask them about the stumps they use? Would they use something else? Why?

I'm sure they could atleast get close to a written quote.

    Goodluck.
