Just Want to Top up My Disability Income

Hi 👋 guys I have recently became disabled and I would like something to top up my disability.

I have a great computer setup and tablet and smartphone. With super-fast NBN. I live in the 2760 area only need to make about $200 a week.

Was thinking about seeing if I should learn a new trade maybe Adobe Photoshop at one of the University/colleges I can only work a few hours before I need to rest but if I done something from my home would be great. I am open to suggestions my disability is physical all ideas are welcome. Please feel free to ask me anything.

PS I love this group OzBargain over the years it has saved me lots of money I love how we try to help people.

Someone in the UK is selling their armpit hair for about $5k per week. I haven't investigated further.

    Hi There.

Just wanted to wish you well. I don't really have any ideas but admire your courage and strength.

Please keep going and I hope your disability becomes more manageable in time.

Jump on Seek.com and research if there's any type of home casual type jobs that would interest you.

    Cheers and best wishes mate!

    • Thank you Lexus

Have you considered call centre work-from-home? And the many disability employment agencies?

Saw a decent side hustle the other day which is designing t-shirts for niche markets. If you combine this with your future Photoshop skills you could make some passive income. Just keep up to date with the current memes/trends and it could work out selling the artwork to the many marketplaces online like Teespring or Redbubble.

If you're a decent typist you could check out transcribing jobs - they can be quite flexible.

If it were easy to make an extra $200 a week, we'd all be doing it.

    • WIth Redbubble downsizing significantly there appears to be declining demand and now an over-supply of competitor sole-traders.

  • I recently paid $80 for a rap tee design on Fiverr. The guy would have had most of it templated and it probably only took him an hour or two You probably need a decent idea about design trends though.

Voice acting is another idea, an Australian accent might give you somewhat of an edge whereas with photoshop you're competing against millions of teens across SEA.

I read the title and thought you literally wanted to top-up your disability - as in, somehow become more disabled!

    • +1

Same, but after reading it, I think they meant how to top up their disability pension

      • haha I realised that after I went in to have a look. He's changed the title now…

Mods changed the title. OP was a post and ghost.

Perhaps look into a remote/work from home data entry job.

  • You could look at being a participant doing user testing for web and mobile products - services like usertesting.com, lyssna (formerly usabilityhub), testmate, etc.

Doesn't need qualifications, your understanding of what's happening in a web interface is valuable to UX/UI researchers.

If you have a more local perspective (i.e. Australian) and/or professional niche this can also be more valuable for researchers looking to test a specific target market.

Haven't done it myself, but have been on the other side as a researcher. Best of luck!

  • You can access disability employment support services.
Make enquiries to the NDIS if you haven't already.

Consider what you are interested in. Just because you have a disability doesn't mean you don't have choices.

Are you interested in programming? Python is pretty fun.
Are you interested in music production or graphic design? There are some areas to upskill.
For a bit more income you might look to teaching English online. Palfish, OKKid (I think), are some options. Maybe even some English editing work if your grammar is up to scratch.

You can only go for a few hours before needing a rest, but is that "expected" to be the case forever? Perhaps you could even look into studying OT or something that would allow you to make use of your experiences to help others?

I hope you the best, man.

  • Hey Mate,
Check out upwork.com to see what types of jobs are in demand and how much they pay.
You can work internationally as well. It's easy to make $200. Best of luck!

Don't bother with university, just sign up to your local library to access Linkedin Learning(Formerly called Lynda.com) for free, and then go through the lessons there at your own pace.

What were you doing for income previously?

Some office jobs allow working from home full-time, so it's possible to still have a full income if you want or have the capacity to do that..

    • +1

Even at reduced capacity, it's often possible to find some work in a field where you have some experience.
For example, if you worked retail, staffing a chat window, or if you worked in hospitality, managing reservations. Might as well try for the types of roles where you might have some relevant experience.

  • So digital arts courses i find can develop your creativity skills by showing you new tricks with digital tools. They don’t turn a farmer into picaso. There are free tutorials (eg Youtube) using free tools (eg GIMP) available to five you a feel. Do that before jumping into a paid course with paid tool.

Maybe see if you can remotely attend conferences that showcase different types of freelancing opportunities

  • Thank you everyone for your reply it was very kind of you all

  • Just wanted to say I was not ignoring anyone I thought my post was removed and I didn't get any notification of any replies. I found it by mistake again this morning. Yes it was to top up my disability pension. Thank you all again.
    Have a great week

  • Insurance company customer service/ sales. A colleague's wife works from home 2-3 days a week for an insurance company. Apparently, besides the base pay they can also access bonuses.

    Best of luck!
