TP-Link Deco M5 Mesh Wi-Fi System (2-Pack)

Moved in our new house (two storey, large floor area).
I have TP-Link VX220-G2V modem (brand new) and NBN box in front room (office)
I am with TPG NBN Cable 50 (https://www.tpg.com.au/nbn/nbn50-plan)
There is terrible connectivity from the back living room to the front bedroom.
Upstairs, back bedrooms don't even connect with 2.4g or 5g SSID.
We also sometimes have problems from just the bedrooms next to the living room when the doors are closed.
Like half the time the TV just buffers and our phones won't connect to the wifi at all.

I understand that general recommendation is to place modem/router in a central position in the home within line of sight to where we use the internet most is best.
But its not possible for us to change location of modem. I understand that range extender doesn't work efficiently wrt speed, use of mesh is recommended.

After reading few posts I have decided to go with TP-Link Deco M5 Mesh Wi-Fi System (2-Pack) as it seems to be under $200 budget.
Whats the best deal currently I can find for this? Or should I wait for a week or two for any upcoming sell if there will be any considerable drop or better mesh in this price range?

Thanks for your help.

  • Does it matter that recommended connected clients for one M5 is 30? Not sure if this means two can handle 60. I have >30 connected devices (phones, iPads, notebooks, desktops, Homepods, Apple TVs, lightbulbs, home automation hubs, motion sensors, temperature sensors, cameras, pedestal fans, dishwasher, etc) so haven't yet made the leap to a Mesh system.

IIRC that one has very similar guts to the original Google WiFi I have, just slightly faster 2.4g band.

My 3x Google WiFi with similar specs all hard wired gigabit back-haul is bliss, but when setting it up initially I tried wireless back-haul and it was terribad

The pucks had to be in rooms next door to each other in an old, thin masonite interior walled ex housing commission QLDer shoe box to get a strong enough back-haul signal, so two may not fix your prob.

TL:DR - Hard wire that back-haul or you may be disappointed, no dedicated wireless back-haul channel so it is only a small set up from range extenders if you don't hard wire it.

  • I have been using a 3 pack of M5s for several years and they've been great. 60+ connected devices most of the time without issues. As noted above, wired backhaul makes a huge difference, fortunately our house was wired for ethernet when we built it, so that was easy for me to do and put the pucks widely spread out around the house.

With 50mbps and wired backhaul, these should work well for you. I'm looking to upgrade my system now as I've just upgraded to 1,000mbps and the hardware doesn't quite cut it to get the full speed from my connection now. I'm getting about 550mbps on wired and around 400 wireless though, which is very good.

    • I am not sure if I should buy pack of 2 or 3.
Does that mean the only different is like how many devices stay connected to Wifi?
Whats usual device connection count for pack of 2 and 3?

      • I think you should ask TP-Link as it's unclear to me from the specs they post online.
