Scoopon Deal - Little Lamb @ Northbridge - Can a night get any worse?

A disappointment experience that ended up in a mess!

Let me tell you my story!

I had wanted to try Little Lamb for a while, so as soon as I saw the Scoopon offer ($76 for 4 or $48 for 2, boasting a 58% discount over the original menu price). I immediately jump onto the bandwagon without a second thought, purchasing 2x $76 for my family and friends. That was my first mistake! The price for the actual walk-in customer is $39pp including ‘the buffet lot’ that is steamboat, bbq and free flow of drinks. Scoopon quoted that the voucher value of $42.5pp is rather misleading, since the voucher only stated BBQ only and many other restrictions. Strike one.

So I booked a table on a Monday, a public holiday for Queen’s Birthday, which was smooth. Turned up at the restaurant, was given the horrible window seat which was near the entrance with occasional gusts of cold wind. Once we told her we are Scoopon customers, she began to gun out all the restrictions. We are only allowed to pick the BBQ skewers and either 1 beer or 2 can drinks, and no access to any other food around us. Furthermore, she try to push us into paying additional ‘top-ups’ for other menus, such as the steamboat for +$20pp, cooked dishes for +$5pp, dessert for +$5pp. This wasn’t stated in the fine print set out by Scoopon, we were not aware of such rules! So this felt a bit like a bait-and-switch tactic to me. After adding all the ‘top ups’ we are paying more than the full price customer! Strike two.

We took a quick look at the selection of BBQ selections up for offer and found it a disappointment compared to the photos that we saw on Scoopon, Urbanspoon and other review sites. They seem to watered down the quality into pure cheap meats. For example, a skewer of chicken skin (what?), poultry intestines, livers…etc. What happened to Scoopon pictures of capsicum + meat and beautifully marinated shrimps? Strike three.

The upside was the service was great, maybe because I can speak Chinese, so the communication was smoother as compared to other commenters. I know their pain of trying to communicate cross-culturally, especially for some who has strict dietary needs. Therefore, my parents and friends had a great time with the experience albeit the initial set back. However this dining saga ended with an explosive climax few hours later…

While driving home, my stomach started to gurgle, and I thought it was probably only me since I ate a lot. However once I hit home, we all aimed for the toilet. It was runny and horrible. I called my friends, all 4 of them did the same and they only have 2 toilets. I apologised to them sincerely and didn’t know how this experience can turn out this bad. This morning some of us still have that funny feeling inside our stomachs. Strike a million plus one.

After this long wall of text all I have to say is that I am very disappointed and will not go back ever again despite the staff said that we can get a 10% discount the next time we come in for the full buffet. I do not want to pay $39 for a lower-than-average food and selection with this little stomach fumbling bonus. I rather go for Altrium or somewhere where the food quality and service is much better.

This Scoopon voucher is a scam, using bait-n-switch method, misquoting the price and deceptively using the word ‘unlimited’. I had been a Scoopon customer for a few years, and this deal made me question their business practices. They should be called Scampon instead.

Thank you for reading, and sorry to ruin many people’s expectation who bought the voucher and planning to go. If you still want to try it out, go at your own risk. Else see if you can get a refund? Good luck!

Just confirmed that for steamboat buffet it's $35pp and steamboat + bbq it's $39pp.
However they do not have a BBQ buffet price…

So how it makes me wonder exactly what is the actual value we are paying?

Please do yourself a favour and report this to scoopon, nope they cannot refund you but at least warn that they need to triple check their clients, maybe they/ you can report to the health authority…

Sorry this happened to you! Just so you will be clearer if/when you report this to others, The value of the 2 person deal is $85 or $42.50. But that includes a beer, which in Perth could well be $9.

I hate these deals where there is no basis to compare it to on the menu. It is such a scam!!

Thanks for the clarification! Updated with $42.50pp (per person)

I had called into the restaurant as a intrigued customer and here is what I got.
$33 per person for the steamboat buffet that includes free flow of drinks that includes beer and canned drinks.

Exactly right, and what makes it worse is that in the restaurant there is no menu prices until you ask for it. The price isn't advertised outside nor inside. There is just 1 menu that you choose what base of soup that you want!

      • Too bad this dump serves dodgy food. I'd bring a group down there for unlimited beer and steamboat.

    "explosive climax": brilliant

  • Have you seen this, looks like typical of these types of deals!

  • I was scammed by Scroopon and one of their partner restaurant before. Well it was only $30. Will NEVER trust them. Scroopon= Screw you & PON!(Bingo!)

  • The issue is that Scoopon, Groupon, etc etc always keep at least 1/2 the price charged to the customer - so the service provider is losing money hand over fist.

    I have had similar experiences.

I suspect the issue is that the service providers don't do the math properly, and once they realise they are losing so much they pull this sort of crap…

The funny thing is it does both Scoopon and the service providers a lot of reputational damage.

Also have to say I am not sure how many restaurants (other than those that are WAY overpriced) need to do a Scoopon deal - most of the restaurants I've had a Scoopon from are closed within 6 months…

  • Here is the reply from Scoopon regarding this issue

Thanks for writing in to us.

We're sorry to hear that your experience was anything less than fantastic. Having a meal that doesn't agree >with you is never a good thing, and we would kindly ask that you contact this Deal Provider and let them >know, as well as take any action you feel is appropriate.

While I can understand your frustration with the pricing I would like to break it down for you so that it >sets your mind at ease. The RRP advertised was based on the original price (at the time the deal was being >advertised) of the barbecue skewers, which were priced at $2.50 each, based on the fact that each person will >generally eat 15-20 skewers each we can give a minimum of 30 skewers, which equates to $75.00, and the >complimentary beer, which is $5, for two people, making the total RRP $85.00.

We work hard to bring our members great experiences every day, and we are deeply sorry to hear that yours >wasn't as amazing as we had hoped. Your feedback has been passed on to the Business Development Manager >responsible for this deal, and will be used to help us improve future deals for the Scoopon community.

Standard reply as I expected. Nonetheless I was surprised at their price calculation.
Scoopon reckon that a skewer of chicken skins is valued at $2.50 per stick?
I got pictures of their skewers and from my other restaurant experiences. That stick is at max $1… seriously below that $1 mark, rounding up!
Minimum of 30 skewers? Let's just say that one skewer took about 15min average to cook. A coal stove takes in 10 skewers at a time. So minimum of 30 skewers each person will come to a total of 120 sticks and 10 sticks each time.

    12 BBQ rounds * 15mins = 180mins
Roughly about 3 hours for a 4 person meal… reasonable?
Actually come to think of it, we did spend around 3hrs too. Left semi-full and rumbling stomach.

I am still waiting for the restaurant to reply back.

not defending them, but generally skewers are priced between $2 - $8 in any restaurant I've been too. So I don't think they're far off the mark except 15-20 skewers per person? I wouldn't eat that many and I'm fat.

      • I dunno about that $2 - $8. Is that each skewer?

I went to a Chinese place in Northbridge (Perth) where we had Peking Duck. The guy next to me bought satay. Quite certain it was $6 or $7 and there were between 4-7 skewers and lots of sauce.

No way I'd eat more than 2 skewers, even without skin.

Be great if they had skewers of duck tongues, but those are expensive.

        • yeah per skewer.

I went to dinner on Friday night and ordered satays. It cost $9 and consisted of 4 skewers.

I have been to restaurants where I was shocked to find skewers costing $16 for 2.

I just came back from Little Lamb Boxhill on this deal:
    http://www.scoopon.com.au/deals/17883/all-you-can-eat-hot-po…

All I can say is we (4 of us) were having a very good time. The deal description is 100% accurate. We have unlimited Mongolian BBQ, hotpot, a beer each ( and unlimited plum juice and lemon tea), skewer, ice cream plus others. The service was OK. All for less than $15 per person. Unbelievable. In fact I just bought another voucher.

    • glad to hear, i've got mine just need to make a booking.

they keep on extending the deal….

  • Got a friend in Melb who enjoyed Little Lamb too!!
So I guess it is the Perths branch that needed some improvements?
Plus your price is much more reasonable!

  • Quite interesting story

    Thanks for sharing. :D
