Steam Deck OLED Revision Coming Soon

Steam Decks are not directly available in Australia, possibly may never be, but a new OLED version with other internal improvements is being released.

Found this Linus review quite entertaining: https://youtu.be/uCVXqoVi6RE?si=26XshG36w064yeVe

Been enjoying my steam deck for the last year or so.

Just providing as FYI for those considering getting a regular steam deck and might be happy to wait (maybe a year?) to get a decently-priced revised grey import.

    Valve's Official Website
doesn't sound like much in the way of performance but better screen and bettery battery life make it worth waiting for imo

    • +1

      It worked for Nintendo.

30g lighter, not really going to help much when it already feels like holding a little person's skateboard.

      • The difference is that the Switch felt like it desperately needed a performance boost - I got the Switch OLED anyhow and then ultimately got the Steam Deck in frustration.

        • Switch OLED would be better if it were easy to mod.

      • +1

It really doesnt. Its fine I guess unless you got trump hands

    • +3

There are already teardown videos on it, I think it's a pretty decent upgrade until Valve are ready to release the next generation console in a few years.

The OLED screen is the main draw + slightly larger
Doubled included storage (256GB is now 512GB, 512GB is now 1TB)
Better battery life of an hour in some games
Wi-Fi 6E and dedicated Bluetooth antenna
Very slightly lighter, runs cooler, 2 in 1 case included
Better trackpads for those who do use them
Better feeling shoulder buttons (when pressed in)

I'm glad it's not a lazy revision like the PS5 Slim and is actually tempting to those who own the first version. More of a no brainer than going from the Switch to the Switch OLED was.

I really wanted to get a Steam Deck during the next sale and preferably before Christmas.
The good - now I can get this instead.
The bad - there won't be any sales for this this year, and I might not even be able to get one at all.

Isnt there already OLED steam deck? what difference with this new version?

UPDATE: apologise, I mistaken the anti glare feature in the steam deck v1 as OLED

  • Went from the Switch OLED to the Steam Deck and performance was a big upgrade, the screen was a big downgrade. Definitely keen to get my hands on it though all the bargains will be on the existing model.

  • +1

anyone know where the best place to buy it in Australia is these days? I have my steam deck from UK but will be upgrading to this when I can

    • Its not available yet, but if you are happy with an older version there will be tons of sale when people upgrade

  • Keen when its available here.

    • +2

      Officially? Never.

Now we wait for the resellers and supply to become plentiful.

      • Nah resellers are where it’s at.

  • +1

As someone with partial colourblindness, the OLED screen will be a massive boon for me so I can see things better. If anybody sees local resellers pop up with stock, please update here.

I bought a regular deck 1 week ago. The curse is real.

  • +2

Still got the OG model a few Steam sales ago. Definitely no regrets - but hopefully this means they'll include Oz in their second rollout and provide support!

  • +4

Great news, I'm glad it finally got announced. The limited edition also looks gorgeous!

It's pretty annoying how Steam has continued to be petty to Australians since that ACCC ruling that Steam had to give refunds to Australians. Even though now they do it world wide and it's a big selling point when buying games from Steam.

  • Valve deserve all the money. Love that they did a massive refresh, it’s obvious that — unlike most publicly owned companies — they actually give a sh*t about making products their customers will love. Actually so refreshing in this day and age to be honest.

    • +7

It'd be even more refreshing if Valve decided to actually sell the product in this country. Unfortunately the ACCC guaranteeing a warranting doesn't align with their internal libertarian cookiness and profit margins.

Maybe they crunched the numbers and saw that they would make a substantial loss if they shipped here. One because the population is only 25 million and two because we are literally at the bottom of the world. Shipping stuff here is expensive especially for such a small population.

        • +7

I'm not convinced that it's shipping logistics. They could easily pass that cost onto the Aus customer base and it would come in at least comparable to the grey importer markup we pay here.

I genuinely think it's because of this.

        • +3

Valve last time partnered with EB to bring their products over here. Not to mention Lenovo and ASUS have their handheld PCs available officially in Australia, and the Steam Deck's been made available in Asia too.

      • -3

Lol true. You can still obtain them through Kogan though at least. I’m sure they’ll officially sell them here eventually, and I agree with what you commented below (also the L4D2 censorship at launch). We’re probably not in Gaben’s good books and I don’t blame him.

        • +5

Yeah how dare we demand reasonable customer treatment

        • +4

Valve got raked over the coals for their anti-consumer practices and 100% justifiably and deservedly so. I don't understand this frankly bizarre Valve worship.

          • -1

@deadpoet: And I don’t understand all the hate. Valve lost the lawsuit, fixed the issues and also paid the fines.

The Steam Deck is a product that is much more open compared to other products these days and it’s clear that Valve have considered every aspect of it very carefully, that is why I praise them.

My log ally : "hey do you still love me??"
    Me : "……"

  • Kogan has them up for preorder. Im gonna go ahead and pull the pin. Wish me luck. Need that OLED.

    • Nice! I'll join you!

EDIT: $1199 however puts it in the realm of Rog Ally.. hmmm.. decisions decisions

    • Nice! I’ve placed my pre-order too. Says shipping on or before December 21st so we’ll see how it goes. Stoked they’ve got them up already - I’m keen as to get my hands on one :)

    • +3

I'd expect the 1TB model to cost that much. That's a huge markup.

Will wait for the ebay resellers.

      • +1

It's not too bad, once you add sales tax and convert it directly to AUD (without fees) it comes to around AUD940. So that's an extra $240 markup which I don't feel is too bad considering the hoops I'd have to go through to get it myself.

  • Pre-ordered and done so under 28 degrees (price protection) should price drop occur.

I was considering the Legion Go (also Rog Ally) in addition to my OG Steam Deck just to run Xbox games pass natively. However, I do find myself simply game streaming in most cases when I need PC as I only play at home, no commute-playing as example. I do have an abxylute (android handheld) for game streaming also because that screen is better than the OG Steam Deck, but figure the OLED will account for that.

  • Looks like the 512gb OLED model is pre-sold out on kogan. And they've upped the 1TB model by $100 so it's now $1479

    • +2

Looks like they jacked up the price of both by $100. Very cheeky. Maybe they werent anticipating demand.

      • +2

cheeky buggers they have too! back in stock again, I really wonder how they get their hands on these units…

This Australian Linux Youtuber got a review unit.

It's here! Steam Deck OLED is available now in the US, CA, UK, and EU on Steam (and Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong via KOMODO). Order now at https://steamdeck.com; starts shipping immediately!

We should be seeing eBay resellers get theirs soon!

  • Preordered a month ago and just got a note from Kogan that the 21st of Dec ship date has been pushed back to Jan 16th sigh. Was looking forward to this one over the Chrissy break alas.

    • I got the same notification today.

  • Just got notification that mine got shipped today, so earlier than the revised date of 16 Jan. Will presumably be delayed by the Christmas period.
