PSA: Lebara Pay as You Go E-Sim and Physical Sim $7 for 365 Days

With the recent phone outages I thought it would be a good idea if I had some sort of redundancy on my phone.
I'm currently on Boost mobile (Telstra network), but the idea is that I would have at least a different carrier loaded on my phone ready to go at anytime.

Lebara basically doesn't advertise their PAYG.
It's a bit clumsy but you can still get it.
Physical SIM/e-sim – Order the $2 Starter Pack online (or pick one up at somewhere like Coles). When you receive it, activate it on the website (not through the app, doesn't show as an option on the app) and do a Pay As You Go top up – minimum $5. That'll keep active for 365 days.

More info:

PS: They even hide the $2 starter pack on the website.
To find it:

  1. Go to 30 day plans. https://www.lebara.com.au/prepaid-plans/30-day/
  2. Go all the way to the right of all the plans.
  3. Find it next to XXL 30 day plan

  • amazing. and esim as well…… with dual sim phone we can put cheap data on 2nd slot, swapping each month.
problem is when i need to make call people will see different number from me haha.
and some banks will recognise the phone number you are using when calling them

  • alternative - credit to @watchnerd
    amaysim. not $7 but $10

      amaysim is Optus network

      • oh.. did the outage few days ago affecting their reseller as well? i wasnt with them

        • +2

Yes, I'm with Amaysim and was "SOS Only" until 1pm

        • +2

          it did.

        • Amaysim is Optus, they were down too. However the idea is to have a backup that is a different carrier to your main sim. So having Amaysim/Optus as plan B is fine as long as you main sim isn't with Optus.

          • @mykeymichael: Then having a "free" boost as the primary is good enough

            • @sicaboy: cant have free boost as primary as it means you will be changing your number each month. or port out port back port out each month and risking loosing your main number when things go south

            • @sicaboy: Not really. The "free" Boost sim cards is better for Data or secondary number, because it's not free after first month and you have to pay higher cost than other networks like Optus MVNO or Vodafone MVNO unless you get and activate "free" Boost sim card every month. So, with dual sim card phone or dual phones, one can be used as main number for phone call/sms and the other number mainly for Data even though you can use it for call/sms too.

Telstra network was down too in the past. No network is perfect. Imagine when Telstra network is down and you cannot call/sms/use data or receive call/sms. This happened in the past not the first time for Telstra …

              • @neoleo: @neoleo Exactly my thoughts. I'm on a boost 365 day plan. I'm just preparing if that went down and I needed to make a call or use a little bit of data. Ideally I could get the amaysim PAYG e-sim too. Would have all three carriers ready to go on my phone.
And if all three were down, well……. I'll just send smoke signals.

                • @mykeymichael: If all three are down, how about Starlink :P There is an increasing trend that certain newer phones or networks can send emergency messages through Starlink.

      • yeah you wouldn't want to reply on an Optus provider sim for a backup or emergencies.
I'd suggest Boost or Aldi, both Telstra.

  • +1

Aldi have similar for Telstra network, $5 for 60 days PAYG but you then have to recharge $15 and get 365 days. So its more expensive but if you want Telstra. As an emergency back up for when a carrier falls over its probably not worth it vs the cheaper Anaysim or Lebara, but it might be worth it if you very occasionally end up outside your carrier's range in the middle of the bush or something and the Telstra one can be a back up to that situation (yes, I know its not the full telstra network but its better than Vodafone coverage, for example)

Definitely would also recommend Aldi as a PAYG backup if you have an available physical Sim slot and aren't already on the Telstra network

    • no more $15 in ALDI. price increase from Nov.

      • That’s only their monthly plans, not their PAYG

Thanks for sharing, gonna move my amaysims to Lebara. Save $3!

Maybe worth adding in your post that Lebara uses Vodafone.

    • and how is your setup? do you have dual sim, and will you use lebara in esim, and what will be on the other slot?
also how long you have been doing that setup, any issue with making phone calls/sms (as you cant do it from your main number amaysim/lebara)

      • Nah, mine is all single physical sim. I use them for my IoT stuff and failovers (car tracker, fridge, etc.).
10+ years no issues with calls/sms/data. But I can tell you for sure that service providers (at least amaysim) sell your data!

Nobody except me and amaysim knows my random fridge number, but my fridge is also getting those scammers/phishers phone calls ffs. They know my name and address too!

If I were you, anything but Optus, so Lebara/ALDI/Boost.

        • belong, kogan, lyca, woolworths mobile too on that list

  • After the $5 has been used up for whatever reason, is the recharge also the same amount or more (as in the case of Aldi)?

EDIT: Just saw it's $10 to recharge. Still not bad compared to Aldi's $15.

  • Bought a physical sim from woolies unaware the esim is a different starter pack….. sigh.

  • ANYONE know if we can use $14.90 kit for this pay as you go 365 day too???

    • No, you'll get charged extra. Last time I bought discount $24.95 pack but pick another different $24.95 from the activation list and got charged full price of that package from the debit card.

      • ??? That sounds super odd
